After two consecutive rainouts, Sunday Night Thunder returned to Double-X Speedway for the annual “Race for Riley”, Riley Hudson Memorial Race. Many special events and giveaways were done throughout the evening along with special races and bonuses for fans and drivers alike. The “Race for Riley” is held each year in memory of young race fan Riley Hudson by her family who work very hard throughout the year to make this a true special event in Riley’s memory.

The Super Stock class was the featured class for this years event with 14 cars and drivers on hand to vie for the increased winners share for the night. Two heat races began the evening in the class with Steve Beach and Cole Henson claiming the seven car heats. Cars from each of these heats were selected to compete in an eight lap dash for cash with $200 going to the winner. Cole Henson rocketed to the point on the opening lap of the dash and was not bested as he claimed the winners spoils. Steve Beach was second, Dale Berry third, Ted Welschmeyer claimed forth Derek Henson fifth and John Clancy sixth. A pill draw determined the starting line up for the 20 lap feature event and the top six cars were inverted for the main event. The invert saw veterans Dale Berry and Derek Henson on the front row. Henson would put his 27D machine in the lead and drove a good race holding off the constant hounding of Ted Welschmeyer.  Clicking off thirteen green flag laps Henson would set the pace with a lot of close racing behind him. Welschmeyer would hold off Berry to take second at the stripe. Following the lead duo, Harlan Dowell edged John Clancy at the striper for third by inches, Cole Henson would recover from an early race bobble to take fifth and Steve Beach finished sixth. Andrew Roark, Jeff Offerman, Dylan Bias and Evan Hays would complete the top ten. John Clancy was named the “Hard Charger” for the event for advancing six places from his tenth starting position, a well deserved honor.

The 600cc Micro Sprint feature would see a first time winner in victory lane and it was quite fitting that Kaitlin Boland would claim her first victory on a night honoring a special young lady. Kaitlin would lead the fifteen lap distance by running an exceptional race on the bottom finishing of a hard charging youngster Braydon Cromwell who was just off the rear bumper of Boland in claiming second. Kale Mueller made the tow from Savannah, Mo to claim third, Kameron Key was fourth and Nick Rasa finished fifth. Brian Wood, Braydon Renfrow, Paul Alberson, Randy Corpening and Jon Bernhardt rounded out the top 10. Boland and Cromwell claimed the heat races in the class.

The Winged Sprint Cars put on a classic and competitive race as well. Jonathan Cornell use a power move on the opening lap in turns one and two threading the needle between front row starters J. Kinder and Tyler Bank to advance from his fourth starting spot to second as Kinder would hold the lead for the first four laps. Cornell would pass the leader coming out of turn four to assume the lead on lap five. Cornell would continue to lead with Kinder in tow, sixth starting Cody Baker would move into third and begin to pressure Kinder until the first caution on lap 16. On the restart Baker would take over the second spot. Another caution two laps later would bunch the field again. On he restart Baker would being to pressure Cornell, pulling alongside on the last lap but Cornell would have the momentum and hold on to claim the win, his third in a row in the “Race for Riley” events. Baker finished a close second, Corey Nelson came from seventh to third, Tyler Blank recovered from an opening lap bobble put his elbows up and came back to finish fourth, Kinder completed the top five. Taylor Walton, Ben Brown, Miles Paulus, Curtis Boyer and Broc Elliott completed the top ten. Blank and Kinder claimed the qualifying heat races.

The Hobby Stock class completed the card with Chuck Coffey claiming the victory. Chris Brockert ran his best race of the season claiming second, Daniel Cary finished third in his first visit to XX this season, Alvin Coonce was fourth and Doug Coffey rounded out the top five. Chuck Coffey and Mike Schrader won the heat races.

Thanks to the Hudson family for organizing this special event and thanks to all of those that supported the efforts to make the evening a success. Several young race fans went away with new bicycles, autographed memorabilia and other prizes. Also thanks to those that supported the fundraising auction at intermission so that the work of Women’s and Children’s Hospital of Columbia can continue the work that they do in Riley’s memory also.

Only three weeks remain in the 2016 season at Double-X.  We would like to extend an invitation to you if you have not visited yet this year, and if you are a familiar face we hope to see you back again for Sunday Night Thunder.
