CARSON SHORT DOES IT AT TRI-STATE – HIS FIRST USAC WIN!

tri-state-speedway Haubstadt, IN – July 16, 2016 – It was a packed house as round six of Indiana Sprint Week played out at Tri-State Speedway Saturday night. The crowd watched as a 30 lap USAC sanctioned feature race whirled around the quarter mile track. Lap after lap there was that potential for a lead change. Drivers were passing other cars to challenge for a top five spot but one car stayed out front. Carson Short led all 30 laps. The victory was worth $5,000. It was his first win at Tri-State Speedway and his first AMSOIL USAC feature victory. The accomplishment was magnified in that it came during Indiana Sprint Week. And it continued a trend in which six races at six different tracks have produced 6 different winners. Three of those were first time USAC victors!

Short’s RCM Motorsports RASS Classic Restoration sponsored DRC was fast and his effort behind the wheel flawless. Kyle Cummins caught him, stayed close, but never found any opportunity to make a pass.

They were both brilliant in traffic as was third running Chase Stockon. Robert Ballou was gaining ground on the threesome. Ballou was honored as the Hard Charger for the race in moving up from a 16th starting spot on the grid to finish fourth. Jarett Andretti took fifth in the battle for the top paying spots.

In victory lane Carson Short found that one word to describe the feat. “Unreal! With five to go I saw Cummins down there.” But Short had the sprint car he needed. “The car got even better halfway through the race.” Cummins was complimentary. “Carson made no mistakes. He picked the right line every time.”

The second five included an on-the-move Critter Malone, USAC and IN Sprint Week points leader Brady Bacon, Chad Boespflug, semi feature winner Kevin Thomas Jr., and Max McGhee. Fast Qualifier Josh Hodges was eleventh. His lap of 13.319 seconds was the best of the field of 39 qualifiers.

The USAC heats were won by Robert Ballou, Thomas Meseraull, Logan Jarrett, and Carson Short. It was to be Short’s night as first demonstrated in his last lap pass to win an exciting fourth heat.

Brian Karraker won the C Main. In the semi or B that followed Donny Brackett flipped on the backstretch while battling for the lead with Isaac Chapple.
The UMP Open Wheel Modifieds concluded the program with a 25 lap feature which paid $1,000 to win. That winner was Levi Kissinger.

It was win number 3 for Kissinger at the speedway this year. It was a difficult venture. Matt Lane and Zach Fair battled for the top spot until lap 13 when Lane was involved in an incident in turn one which brought about a caution. Three cars retired to the pits with flats or damage. Lane restarted but the battle for the lead continued with Zach Fair using the inside while Kissinger was working to make it happen on the outside. Side by side racing continued.

Kissinger prevailed followed by Fair, Josh Harris, Brandon McDowell, and Stephen Schnapf. Matt Lane came back up through the field to claim sixth spot. Earlier in the program Matt Lane, Zach Fair, and Trent Young won the heat races for the modifieds.

Kissinger was candid in the post race interview. “I couldn’t use any more race track. I like this place but you have to drive the wheels off to do anything!”
The next race at Tri-State Speedway is scheduled for August 13th.

That is the night that the Hoosier Sprint Nationals will be held this year. The MSCS Sprints will compete for a $5,000 first prize. The UMP Modifieds and MMSA Mini-sprints will be the two accompanying attractions.
