Guy Continues His Hot Streak At Lincoln IL Speedway
Weisser Races Past Top Contenders In Mods

Lincoln IL Speedway was back to green this past Friday, July 29 with an exciting show that included the Raminator Monster Truck, presented by Lincoln Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.  On track were the UMP Midwest Technical Institute Modifieds, UMP Pro Late Models, POWRi/Illlini D-II Midgets Presented By Nutech Seed, and the UMP Hornets.  The track provided great racing action and solid car counts for those in attendance.

The race of the night was in the 18 car Midwest Technical Institute UMP Modified class.  It was all set up by the pre-race frisbee redraw, which saw Allen Weisser and Brian Lynn, two of the fastest at the track, get unfavorable draws, putting them a couple rows back.  When the green dropped, the two started their march toward the front.  Weisser got their first of the two, taking the lead from Donovan Lodge on lap eight, from his fifth starting spot.  Lynn, however, a many time track champion and three time feature winner at the track this year, started to track him down after moving into second on lap ten.  With five to go, the duo started a back and forth battle that saw a handful of lead changes, via slide jobs and crossovers.  Lynn officially took the lead on lap 16 but had it taken back away for good moments later.  For Weisser, it was his second feature win of the year at the 1/4-mile dirt oval.  Following the Peoria, IL driver were Lynn, Curt Rhodes, who had a good run from midpack, Kelly Kovski who also rallied from deep in the field, and Donovan Lodge.

In the 17 car, UMP Pro Late Model feature event, Springfield, IL driver Guy Taylor was the odds on favorite, after drawing the #2 in the redraw.  Taylor went on to show everyone why he has turned his season around after a slow start.  The red and white #4T pulled out to a big advantage from the get-go, as he rode the cushion around the top of the track.  His race didn’t come without a bit of a scare, though, as he did make contact with the wall at one point, allowing the defending track champion, Nick Bauman to close the gap.  Bauman, in fact, looked to the lowside to make a pass but had to maneuver some lap traffic while doing so.  Taylor pulled back out to a breathable margin for his second Lincoln victory in a row.  Taylor has also claimed two Macon feature wins in a row and is now five out of his last six and six of his last eight at the two venues overall.  Bauman came from sixth to take second place, while AJ May and Jose Parga had a somewhat rough battle for third with May taking the spot.  Jake Little, the current point leader at the track, took the fifth spot.

Mitchell Davis and Patrick Bruns started alongside one another in the 20-lap POWRi/Illini D-II Midget presented by Nutech Seed A-Main.  Davis pulled out to the early lead but it was short lived as division frontrunner, Patrick Bruns, took the spot on lap three.  Bruns pulled out to a healthy advantage as Davis settled into second with a big gap over third.  Track point leader, Tyler Vantoll, moved from fifth to third but never had a caution to help him close the gap on the top two.  As the checkered waved, Bruns claimed his fourth Lincoln feature win of the season, while Davis, Vantoll, Austin Archdale, and Johnny Heydenreich finished off the top five.  Chett Gehrke, who accepted the Conklin Agrovantage challenge and started at the tail, came through the pack to get sixth but a needed yellow never came to get closer to the $900 bonus.

The youngsters were on hand in the KidModz division for their visit in 2016.  A small field of three showed up but fans saw an entertaining show between Dominic Mertzke and Ryan Hamilton for the lead.  While Mertzke led for the duration, Hamilton was all over him trying to find a way out front.  When the checkered fell, it was Mertzke, Hamilton, and Blake Bailey taking the three spots in a caution free race.  The drivers range in age from 11-14, driving full size Modifieds with less powerful engines.

Rounding out Friday’s feature program was a stout field of 16 competitors in a 15-lap Hornet event.  Jeremy Reed, by way of a heat race win, started from the front row and took the lead from the start.  Behind him, Matthew Mackey and Dallas Strauch were keeping him honest by staying close, all while competing for the second spot.  In a pretty clean event that only saw one or two slowdowns, Reed went on to claim the win, while Mackey, Strauch, Brandon Gibbs, and Mike Eskew completed the top five.

Lincoln Speedway will next be in action on Friday, August 12 for a Fan Appreciation and Kids Night.  While admission prices are $12 at the gate, many area sponsors and businesses will have vouchers that are good for $5 admission on race night.  It will be a great night to bring a big group of friends and family to the track for an extremely cheap price.  There will also be plenty of activities for kids, including entertainment, goody bags, and more.  Kids 11 and under receive free admission.

On track will be the Midwest Big Ten Series Pro Late Models, Midwest Technical Institute UMP Modifieds, Midwest Big Ten Series Street Stocks, POWRi/Illini D-II Midgets Presented By Nutech Seed, and UMP Hornets.
