HUMBOLDT, Kan. (Aug. 5) — The Humboldt Speedway hosted the second round of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental Friday night, and Terry Phillips hoisted the winner’s check for $3,000.

The 50-year-old from Springfield, Mo., was the beneficiary of a rough-and-tumble battle for the lead between Cade Dillard and Rodney Sanders midway through the race that saw Dillard retire with rear end damage and Sanders sent to the tail of the field.

Phillips inherited the top spot for the restart with 20 laps in the books, then went unchallenged the final 22 orbits to claim his second career USMTS triumph at ‘The Hummer’ and 24th USMTS win of his career.

Jason Hughes-the defending USMTS national champ and winningest driver ever at Humboldt-drew the pole for the start of the main event and led the first nine laps before Dillard screamed past to take control.

Soon thereafter, Sanders got by Hughes and battled with Dillard for several laps until he was able to get by on lap 19 to take the lead.

Dillard came roaring back around the outside, and the top two finishers on Thursday night made contact at the exit of turn four.

The result was a flat tire and broken rear suspension for Dillard. He went to the pits while Sanders was sent to the rear of the field.

That opened the door for Phillips, who beat Jeremy Payne, Ryan Gustin. Johnny Scott and Hughes to the finish line.

Jesse Sobbing, who came from the back of the field after an early-race mishap, garnered the sixth spot with Sanders making his way back to seventh by race’s end.

Stormy Scott, 17th-starting Lance Town and 24th-starting Mike Densberger rounded out the top 10.

With his second top five finish in the first two nights, Hughes regained the points lead in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup with a slim seven-point cushion over Sobbing and 23 ahead of third-place Dillard. Sanders, Cody Bauman, Joe Duvall, Brock Bauman, Zack VanderBeek, Johnny Scott and Stormy Scott complete the top 10 in the standings.

It’s the 7th annual USMTS Slick-Mist Show-Me Shootout presented by Foley Equipment on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Phillips beat Payne in a memorable, back-and-forth duel two years ago at the ‘Diamond of Dirt Tracks’ and last year saw Johnny Scott beat his brother Stormy Scott for the victory.

Out-Pace USRA B-Mods and Street Stocks also will be in action. Completing the program will be the annual Battle of the Badges, with law enforcement officers from throughout the state racing old police cars for bragging rights and to raise money for Special Olympics of Missouri.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. Admission prices are $20 for adults (16 and up), $17 for seniors (62 and up) and members of the military, $5 for youth (6-15) and kids 5 and under are free. A family pass is just $40, and pit passes are $35.

Lucas Oil Speedway is located at Highways 83 and 54 in Wheatland, Mo. A campground with shower and bathroom facilities is also available. With it’s entrance located just outside the pit gate this sprawling scenic camping facility will continue to enhance the racing experience at the state-of-the-art facility.
