(Warrensburg, MO) Kid’s Night at Central Missouri Speedway brought smiles to the hundreds of kids on hand and to the six winning drivers who claimed main event wins in front of an appreciative and lively crowd.
Kid’s night is always one of the most highly anticipated events of the year for many reasons but for the kids, it’s all about the foot races, goody bags, and giveaways. For the speedway staff and adults, it’s all about bringing up the next generation of drivers and fans to carry on decades of grass-roots racing tradition.
Taking the victories in the kid’s night foot races were Aubrey Petterson for girls and Elijah Branson for boys in the 3-4 age bracket. Khloe Stoeckig for girls and Hunter Worley for boys in the 5-6 age group. Jenny Bowman for girls and Talon Timmermeier for boys in the 7-8 group. Kali Moulton for girls and Peyton Hopkins for boys in the 9-10 age group, and Ellie Wiederhoeft for girls and Aiden Walker for boys in the 11-12 age bracket.
All kids 12 and under received a free hot dog and soda courtesy of CMS Promoters Earl and Susan Walls and an ice-cream treat courtesy of Warrensburg DQ Grill & Chill. Kids also received a goody bag stuffed full of school supplies, driver hero cards, treat coupons from various businesses, and trinkets. Several stuffed back packs and bikes were also given away and many race teams donated t-shirts for the kids as well.

For the night’s competition, 86 drivers checked in for competition in USRA Modified, Street Stock, B-Mods, and Pure Stock weekly championship racing along with guest classes the Allstar Midget Series and the Midwest Mod-Lite Racing Series (MMLRS).
Preliminary heat races started the night’s racing off as drivers competed to earn their starting grid positions for the main events. Scott Martin drove to his first heat race victory in the first Pure Stock heat with Kyle Rowland claiming heat number two.
In the next set of heat races, Robert Bell of Colfax, Iowa captured the opening Allstar Midget Series opening heat race with Wesley Smith taking heat two. Jacob Ebert captured his twelfth heat-race victory of the year in the opening B-Mod heat with Chad Staus claiming a fourth heat win of the year in heat two, and Troy Carlyle taking a fifth heat-race win in the third and final B-Mod heat. Donnie Dannar of Oak Grove captured heat one in the MMLRS action with Jeff Raffurty taking the win in heat two.
For the final sets of preliminary action, Brett Wood captured a tenth heat-race win in the opening Street Stock heat with Brian Inlow blasting to the win in heat two. In USRA Modified action, heat race winners were Ryan Middaugh, Brian Johnson, and Dalton Kirk. The starting grids were then determined as racers prepared for their main events.
Kyle Rowland and Jimmy Smith began the Pure Stock main on row one for the 12-lap race and from the get-go Rowland established a quick pace to lead the field. A quick yellow flag fell early in the race for Scott Martin’s spin as he was able to restart the event. After the green flag racing resumed, Rowland again separated himself from the pack as the Olathe, Kansas driver drove away from the field in a long green-flag run to the victory. Former champ Jeremiah Wilson ran a strong second moving up from his fifth-starting spot. Point’s leader Rodger Detherage rallied from ninth to third with Jimmy Smith and Derek Williams rounding out the top five.
The Allstar Midget Series drivers returned for their 12-lap main event with Wesley Smith of Nixa, Missouri and Iowa driver Robert Bell leading the charge. Smith quickly asserted himself in dominant fashion as settled into a blistering pace for the rest of the drivers to keep up with. Bell and Merril Lamb raced in close proximity for several laps in some of the best action of the night for the second position. Meanwhile, veteran racer Bobby Layne began moving towards from seventh on the grid while Jason Walls also fought for a top-five finish.
The only thing that nearly cost Smith the win was a hair-raising moment on the final lap as he threaded his way through lapped traffic. However, the young driver was able to maneuver his #44 Midget through an opening as he sailed on to his second-consecutive series victory at CMS. Bell won the battle with Merril Lamb for second with Lamb finishing third. Layne came home in fourth position ahead of Barry Lamb and Walls at the conclusion of the caution-free event.
B-Mods then made their way to the track for 15 laps of main-event racing. With the track conditions presenting a challenge for some, four cautions slowed the field as front-row starters Jacob Ebert and Troy Carlyle pulled away early to make it a two-man race. The field slowed on laps 5 and 7 as the rest of the group tried to keep pace with Ebert. Chad Staus and Ryan Edde pulled close to the front-runners in the race’s mid-stage with Dean Wille and Bobby Russell in tow. Another single-car spin slowed the field on lap eight with Carlyle hounding Ebert on the restart while Staus and Edde ran hard for third.
One final caution flew on lap 14 for Olen Stephens as his car stalled in turn one. For the final restart, Ebert showed the way with Carlyle close behind as Carlyle’s car made contact with Ebert on the final lap with Ebert showing resiliency as he drove away from Carlyle for his seventh win of the season. Carlyle was second at the checkers with Staus, Edde, and Russell finishing out the top five as fifteenth-starting Dakota Foster advanced to sixth at the finish.
Mod-Lites returned for a 15-lap main event next on the program with Jeff Raffurty and Donnie Dannar showing the way in front of Justin Raffurty and Ed Griggs. Dannar, a former Modified and Street Stock driver had visited CMS victory lane in the past but he was still in search of his first CMS Mod-Lite win as the race began. Dannar grabbed the point early on leaving Ed Griggs and Jeff Raffurty to battle for second.
Dannar eventually began to pull away from the exciting battle for second, which now included Justin Raffurty and Travis Alexander. The lone caution flag flew over the field on lap nine when Charlie Laisure’s car slid out of control, the quick-thinking Laisure was able to spin the car sideways and avoided potential disaster as he was heading straight for the utility tire in turn one. Laisure was able to rejoin the field when the race resumed.
The final laps saw Dannar pull away as the Oak Grove driver went on to claim the victory. Griggs prevailed in the battle for second while father and son duo Jeff and Justin Raffurty battled for third. This time the youngster prevailed over dad as Justin grabbed third with Jeff fourth. Travis Alexander of Tonganoxie, Kansas rounded out the top five.
For the second time of the night, a main event went green to checkers with the Street Stock drivers displaying their talents for the fans on hand in a quick-paced run to the checkers. Heat-race winners Brett Wood and Brian Inlow began the race from row one and the pair quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the pack in a torrid battle for the lead. Inlow led early on until about the halfway point of the event when Wood began to find an extreme low line to his liking off turn two.
Wood eventually made his line work and grabbed the lead from Inlow; however, a determined Inlow, who has yet to claim a main-event win this year never let Wood out of his sights and looked as though he could regain the lead at any moment. Meanwhile, seventh-starting Brian Ziegler began his charge to the front in the race’s late stages with previous week winner John Brooks also moving forward. At the conclusion of the event, Wood ended up claiming his fifth win of the year with Inlow finishing a strong second. Ziegler ran strong in third with Brooks fourth. Point leader Clayton Campbell rallied late in the event to advance to fifth from row five.
The final event of the night was the USRA Modified 25-lap feature. Edgerton, Kansas racer Dalton Kirk and Richmond, Missouri’s Aaron Marrant showed the way. Just a few weeks ago, Marrant made a last-lap pass on Kirk to claim the win but that didn’t seem to faze Kirk as he blasted to the front. Marrant ran close in second for the initial laps but Kirk looked strong as he pulled away for the first ten caution-free laps. Three quick cautions then flew over the field for two single-car spins and a debris as the field stayed close for the restarts.
When racing resumed, Ryan Middaugh from fourth on the grid began to find the high line to his preference as he challenged Brian Johnson and Marrant for second. Middaugh, of Fulton, Missouri made his move to the runner-up position by lap 13 just before the final caution flag flew on lap fourteen. When racing resumed Kirk led Middaugh in a final green-flag run to the finish. Kirk again pulled away keeping all pursuers at bay to claim his first CMS win of the season. Middaugh posted a CMS best finish of second one spot ahead of Tim Karrick. The track suited Karrick perfectly as he advanced from tenth on the field to also use vintage CMS Karrick high-line run towards the front. Marrant held on for a fourth-place finish while Dwight Niehoff recorded a season-best CMS run to fifth from his ninth-starting position.
Next week, championship racing continues in all divisions along with guest class ULMA Late Models. With only a few weeks of racing left, the championship battles are coming down to the wire for all divisions. ULMA late model drivers will also bring their championship battle to CMS in what is expected to be a quality filled group of drivers in the group’s second-to-last appearance of the year at CMS.
For any new drivers wanting to come out to CMS and give things a try, registration is now just $10 for the remainder of the season for USRA Modified, B-Mod, Street Stock, and Pure Stock drivers. There are no registration fees for ULMA drivers. This Saturday pit gates open at 4:30 with admission gates opening at 5. Driver pill draw cutoff is 6:15 (no passing points awarded to late-arriving drivers). Pit Meeting takes place at 6:30, followed by hot laps at 7, and racing at 7:30.
CMS is located 3.5-miles north of Warrensburg, MO from the junction of Highways 50 and 13 in Warrensburg just north of the new Hwy 13 by-pass round-a-bout, or from the Higginsville exit off I-70, head south on Highway 13 for twelve and half miles.
Admission prices for this weekend are: $12 adult general mission, $10 military with I.D., seniors 65 to 74 $10, kids aged 6 to 12 $5. Children 5 and under and seniors 75 and over free. All pit passes $30.
