(Warrensburg) Championship racing continued at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) on 610 Sports Radio Race Night along with a salute to Camp Valor and Military Personnel stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base and the surrounding areas.

A total of 95 cars checked in for competition in the Pure Stock, B-Mod, Allstar Midget Series, Midwest Mod-Lite, Street Stock, and USRA Modified divisions. The night’s program featured 14 preliminary heat races and 6 main events, for a total of 20 races for the fans in the stands, who were on their way home by 10:35 p.m.

Prior to the start of racing, wounded warriors and their families were recognized from nearby Camp Valor and military personnel were also recognized for their sacrifices and commitment to the freedom of the United States of America as the crowd gave them a big round of applause.

Pure Stock drivers started the night’s action with a 12-car field on hand for a pair of heat races. Darrin Christy picked up where he left off the previous week with a dominating win in the opening heat over Derek Williams and Don Johnson. Jeremiah Wilson claimed his third heat win of the year in the final heat over Rodger Detherage and Jason Ballard.

In Allstar Midget Series heat-race action, Auburn, Illinois driver Mitchell Davis cruised to a dominating win over tail-starting Broc Hunnell and Bobby Layne in heat one while previous CMS winner Wesley Smith of Nixa, Missouri claimed a convincing win in heat two over Chase McDermand and Mike Epperson.

B-Mods were up next for their three preliminary heats as Cody Frazon drove to the win in heat one over pole-sitter Chris Brockway and seventh-starting Rex Harris of Urbana. Heat two was stacked with familiar B-Mod drivers as Troy Carlyle pulled off a turn-four pass on Lucas Isaacs for a hard-fought hard win with Jacob Ebert crossing the finish line in third. In the final B-Mod prelim, Russ Niehoff of Lockwood, Missouri made a late-race pass for the win over Dean Wille and Chase Galvan.

The Midwest Mod-Lites returned to the track for a pair of heat races as Don Dannar claimed the opening race ahead of Justin Raffurty and Jeff Raffurty. Previous feature winner Ed Griggs drove to the win in heat two over Travis Alexander and Ethan Isaacs.

Street Stocks were next in the lineup for two heat races as Jay Prevete claimed victory in the first race over Allen Perryman and Jason Ryun. In heat two, Brett Wood continued to put pressure on Clayton Campbell as he claimed victory over Campbell and Brian Inlow.

The final set of heat races saw the USRA Modifieds back in action as Jim Moody held point and claimed the opening heat win over Ryan Middaugh and Gunner Martin. In the second heat, Brian Johnson cruised to a convincing win over Shad Badder and Nathan Vaughn while in the final heat of the night, Matt Dotson moved up from inside row two to claim the win over Dalton Kirk and Danny Scrogham.

Pure Stocks were first to hit the speedway for their main event of the night asfive-time feature winner Darrin Christy and past champion Jeremiah Wilson led the field to the initial green flag.

At the start of the race, Christy jumped out to an early race lead but as the field was coming to the line for lap two, Josh Helm and Jason Ballard made hard contact in turn four with both drivers okay; however, Helm was unable to continue but Ballard rejoined the field at the tail for the restart. Don Johnson was also an early retiree from the race when Christy led the field back to green-flag racing.

Christy led the opening laps but point’s leader Roger Detherage took command on lap three and began to build up a fairly strong lead over the field. Fourth-running Wilson had problems on lap five as the caution flag flew slowing the field for a second time. When the race resumed, Wilson rejoined the field at the tail with Detherage leading Christy, Larry Norris, and Derek Williams.

In the final laps, Christy began reeling Detherage back in as the two fought hard for the victory with great side-by-side action with Christy preferring the low side to Detherage’s high-running line. On the white-flag lap, Jason Ballard’s car became high-sided on the turn two exit and the field was slowed one final time. Detherage led Christy at the next drop of the green flag and went on to claim his first main event of the year over Christy, Norris, Wilson, Williams, and Dallas Heuser with his best-ever finish.

Wesley Smith was in search of another CMS victory as the 15-lap main event for the Allstar Midget Series when the green flag fell with Broc Hunnell leading the charge. Smith immediately shot out to an early race lead with Chase McDermand of Springfield, Illinois doing all he could to stay with Smith’s torrid pace.

Even through lapped traffic, Smith kept his #44 car at the front of the field in a race that went caution free to the checkered flag. McDermand repeatedly tried to close in on Smith and came close a few times but in the end had to settle for second behind Smith. Mitchell Davis finished third with Hunnell fourth, and Bobby Layne in fifth.

Cody Frazon and Troy Carlyle began the night’s B-Mod main event on the front row just in front of Russ Niehoff and Dean Wille. Early in the 15-lap main event, Carlyle set the pace with Frazon, Niehoff, and Wille in tow. A single-car spin on lap three bunched the field together for the restart with Carlyle darting out to the front and ultimately building up a sizable lead in search of his first feature victory of the season.

When racing resumed, Carlyle led Wille, Frazon, and Jacob Ebert but a second single-car incident slowed the field once again. After some green-flag laps, a third yellow flag fell over the field as two cars came together forcing another yellow flag. For the restart, Wille began putting heavy pressure on leader Carlyle as he searched for a way around on the challenging elements of the turn one and two area.

For the final stretch, one more caution flew before Wille and Carlyle resumed their battle for the win. Late in the race, Wille found something on the high side and made the pass for the lead to claim his first feature win of the season. Carlyle held on for second to keep the championship standings close. Frazon finished in third position with Lucas Isaacs and Jacob Ebert rounding out the top five.

Donnie Dannar of Oak Grove and Ed Griggs of Pleasant Hill led the field to the opening laps of the Mid-West Mod Lite main event as drivers tried to figure out a way to beat Griggs and Dannar, both previous feature winners during CMS Mod-Lite action.

Dannar led the early portion of the race with Griggs and Justin Raffurty close behind until lap nine when Griggs found his way to the front. Dannar stayed right with Griggs in a bid to regain the lead but Griggs repeatedly held his closest pursuers at bay. Lap-by-lap Griggs held fought off any challengers and went on to claim the a-main event win, becoming the first repeat Mod-Lite winner this year at CMS. Dannar settled for second with son and father duo Justin Raffurty and Jeff Raffurty third and fourth while Travis Alexander finished in fifth. CMS is in talks with the group to return again next year and hopes to make an announcement during the off-season regarding the 2017 season.

Jay Prevete and Brett Wood paced the field at the start of the Street Stock 15-lap main event but it didn’t take long for Wood to dart out to an early race lead. However, with the championship on the line in the closing weeks, Otterville’s Clayton Campbell assumed command of the race relegating Wood back to second to lead early.

Just as it appear Campbell might pull away from Wood during the race’s mid-stages, Wood reeled the leader back in as the two drivers battled for the lead. Just behind the leaders, Brian Inlow and Prevete had a battle of their own for the third position as Allen Perryman had his hands full with John Brooks for fifth.

The race ran caution-free for the first 13 laps until Wood encountered a spin in turn four as the caution waved for the first and only time. With Wood rejoining the field at the tail, the race resumed with Campbell leading the way over Inlow and Brooks, who powered his way from sixth at the drop of the green. In the end, Campbell held on to take his fourth win of the year with Inlow second, Brooks third, Prevete fourth, and Perryman fifth, Wood recovered to sixth to keep the point’s chase within reach.

For the second-consecutive week, the USRA Modified main event went right to the end with another intense and exciting battle for the $1,000 weekly race payout. With four lead changes, the fans were treated to another exciting race as Jim Moody and Matt Dotson raced hard for the victory on a challenging race surface in turns one and two.

Shad Batter and Dotson began the race on row one with Brian Johnson and Dalton Kirk close behind. While Kirk ran strong early on, he eventually encountered an early retirement from the race. Johnson ran near the front in the race’s early stages until he also encountered problems while running third along with track point’s leader Kevin Blackburn, who later recovered to a twelfth-place finish.

With Dotson showing the way, fifth-starting Moody began working his way towards the top three by lap five when the first caution flag waved over the field. For the restart, Dotson then led Badder, Moody, Johnson, Nathan Vaughn, and Ryan Middaugh.

As the drivers searched for the best method to navigate the turn one and two area, Dotson led the first six laps until the first change for the lead occurred on lap seven as Moody, already a two-time winner this season, moved past Dotson for the lead. Moody led laps 7 through 11 before the pair ran nearly even at the line with Dotson moving back out front to lead lap 12 in front of Moody, who retook the lead a lap later.

Johnson and Blackburn’s top-five runs ended in between turns one and two as the caution flew on lap 16 to slow the field with both drivers going to the back on the restart. On the ensuing restart, Robby Test’s strong run also came to an end as he fell from sixth to the tail of the field after a spin in turn two.

For the closing laps, Dotson kept pace with Moody as he searched high and low for a way around Moody. The two drivers mastered the turns and separated themselves from the rest of the field as behind them, the close-quarters racing led to one final caution as top-five running Gunner Martin encountered a spin on lap 21. Martin reported to the hot pit area but his crew informed him that too much damage had occurred as he also retired from the race.

For the final four laps, Moody kept Dotson behind him even though his preferred line was beginning to fade away. Moody eventually held on despite a furious last-lap charge by Dotson to take his third main-event win of the year.

In victory lane Moody said, “It’s always tough with the 88 (Dotson) breathing down your neck!” Dotson finished in second position with Badder in third. Ryan Middaugh had another exceptional CMS run to finish in the fourth position while Danny Scrogham also turned in a strong top-five run in the fifth position.

Championship weekly racing continues next weekend with competition in the USRA Modified, Street Stock, B-Mod, and Pure Stock divisions. The Allstar Midget Series will also return to CMS.

Pit Gates open at 4:30, Grandstands at 5, Driver’s Pill Draw Cutoff 6:15 (no passing points for late drivers), Pit Meeting 6:30, Hot Laps at 7, and Racing at 7:30. Adult Admission is $12, Military w/I.D. $10, Seniors 65 and up $10 and College Students with student I.D. $10, Kids 6 to 12 years $5, children five and under and senior citizens 75 and over free, all pit passes are $30.

For any new drivers wishing to race at CMS, registration is now just $10 for the remainder of the season for USRA Modified, B-Mod, Street Stock, and Pure Stock drivers. There is no registration fee for guest classes at CMS. This Saturday pit gates open at 4:30 with admission gates opening at 5. Driver pill draw cutoff is 6:15 (no passing points awarded to late-arriving drivers). Pit Meeting takes place at 6:30, followed by hot laps at 7, and racing at 7:30.

CMS is located 3.5-miles north of Warrensburg, MO from the junction of Highways 50 and 13 in Warrensburg just north of the new Hwy 13 by-pass round-a-bout, or from the Higginsville exit off I-70, head south on Highway 13 for twelve and half miles.
