BULLS GAP, Tenn. – Apr. 28, 2017 – The Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals presented by Sunoco Race Fuels and Tennessee RV returned to action on Friday evening with the 5th Annual Scott Sexton Memorial event and Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn. would be victorious and claim the $10,052 to win event.

Marlar’s victory was his seventh career Spring Nationals triumph, which tops the Spring Nationals all-time win list and was his first since winning the Spring Nationals event at Dixie Speedway on May 28, 2016. Marlar would drive the Ronnie Delk owned Delk Equipment, RS Trading Company, Midwest Sheet Metal, Sunoco Race Fuels sponsored #157 Rocket Chassis, Cornett Race Engines powered entry.

Michael Chilton would take the race lead at the drop of the green flag, with Mike Marlar, Chris Madden, Jimmy Owens, and Shanon Buckingham giving chase. Chilton would open up a bit of a lead until he began to work slower traffic on lap 9 and Marlar would close in on Chilton. The pair would battle side-by-side for the lead on lap 14 with Marlar dealing Chilton a slide-job for the lead in turn two on lap 15, however Chilton would return the favor in turn four barely have the lead at the line. Marlar’s second attempt for the lead would be successful as he would take the top spot from Chilton on lap 16 with a turn four pass.

As the field saw the halfway signal, Marlar would begin to drive away from the pack somewhat, while Chris Madden would begin to battle with Michael Chilton for the runner-up position. As Marlar continued to pull away, Chilton and Madden would wage war for the second position, with Madden finally winning the battle on lap 37. As Madden would try to reel in Marlar, Jimmy Owens would close in on Chilton for third and that pair would battle in traffic over the finally few laps, while Dale McDowell would creep up on both drivers and pass them for third in final couple of laps. Marlar would claim the victory in the caution-free event, with Madden finishing in second, and McDowell scoring the third position. Owens and Chilton would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Donald McIntosh, Shanon Buckingham, Eric Wells, Kyle Hardy, and Brandon Sheppard.

The next event for the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals presented by Sunoco Race Fuels and Tennessee RV will be on Thursday May 4 for the rescheduled Tennessee Tipoff Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN. The event will be 75 laps and pay $15,000 to the winner. Of note, the top sixteen starters in the event are set from qualifying heats that were completed on March 10, only to have the second day of the event postponed due to inclement weather. There will be a B-Main as well on May 4 to set the remainder of the field and any driver that was not originally in attendance can enter, but will have to start at the rear of the field.
