West Burlington, IA (Saturday, May 6, 2017) – Last Saturday mother nature dropped several inches of rain over the grounds at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, plus with very low temperature,s that forced the first cancellation of the 2017 season. But what a different weekend it was this weekend, as sunny skies and upper 60’s helped to produce racing on Roberts Tire Center and The Mix Night. At the end of the night six new drivers visited victory lane for the first time of the season at the track.

The Crazy Coyote Mini Hauler Trucks made there first visit of the season at the track, with John Helenthal and Drake Fenton drawing the front row for the 12 lap feature. Fenton would take advantage of his front row start to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Jerad Ruble, who started 5th, and Helenthal. Ruble would follow in Fenton’s tire tracks until lap 3, when he worked under him to take the top spot away. Fenton would try to get back by Ruble over the final laps. But Ruble was able to hold him off in a caution free race to pick up the win. Fenton settled for 2nd, Helenthal was 3rd, Lance Applegarth was 4th, with Dylan Reverend coming home in 5th.

Up next was the 15 lap Casebine Credit Union IMCA SportMod feature, with Tom Lathrop and Scott Williams leading the field to green. But it was third place starter Austen Becerra who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Williams and John Oliver Jr. Oliver Jr. moved into the runner up spot on lap 2, and then went to work on Becerra for the lead. The two would start to pull away from the rest of the field, when the first and only caution of the race appeared on lap 10. Dustin Ravelin would spin in turn 4 in front of the leaders to bring out the yellow. On the restart Becerra moved back out front, with Williams taking back second from Oliver Jr. Becerra then pulled away over the final 4 laps to claim his first win of the season at the track. Williams was 2nd, Andrew Burk came from 6th to finish 3rd, Oliver Jr. was 4th, with Brandon Lennox coming from 11th to finish in 5th.

Jeff Mallonee and Chase McDermand drew the front row for the 15 lap IMRA Midget feature, with McDermand jumping out front on lap 1 over Mallonee and Adam Taylor. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 2, when Mitchell Davis slowed to a stop in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. McDermand moved back out front on the restart, with Mallonee and Taylor close behind. Mallonee would slip under McDermand coming off turn 4 on lap 4 to take the top spot away. Two laps later, on lap 6, Brent Burrows slowed to a stop in turn 2 to bring out the second caution of the race. On the restart Derek Goble and Burrows collided down the front stretch to bring the caution light back on. The following restart saw Mallonee jump back out front, with Taylor and Tyson Hart following. Taylor tried to look under Mallonee over the next 5 laps, when the final caution of the race appeared on lap 11 to slow the action. Jacob Sollenberger spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Mallonee moved back out front, with Taylor and Hart still following. Mallonee would hold off all challenges over the final laps to pick up his first win of the season at 34 Raceway. Taylor was 2nd, Hart was 3rd, Jeremy Hull started 14th and passed 10 cars to come home in 4th, with Dillon Morley rounding out the top 5.

The 20 lap WT Gabeline & Sons Trucking 305 Sprint feature was up next, with Brayden Gaylord and Daniel Bergquist making up the front row. Bergquist would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Gaylord and Dave Getchell. On lap 2 Getchell over took Gaylord to move into the runner up spot, and then went to work on Bergquist for the lead. The two would start to pull away from the rest of the field, as they started to enter lapped traffic on lap 9. But when Colton Fisher spun in turn 2 on lap 15 to bring out the first and only caution of the race, this would bring the rest of the field back to their back bumpers. On the restart Getchell used the momentum off the top of turn 4 to take over the lead, with Bergquist and Nick Guernsey, who started 8th, close behind. While Getchell used the top of the track, Bergquist worked the bottom. Which paid off coming to the white flag, as Brgquist took the lead back from Getchell. Bergquist then held on over the final lap to score his first win of the season at the track. Getchell was 2nd, Jarrod Schneiderman, who started 7th, finished 3rd, Guernsey was 4th, with Donnie Steward coming home in 5th.

Mitch Boles and Dustin Smith led the field to green in the 20 lap Victory Lane Suspensions IMCA Modified feature. But it was fourth place starter Bill Roberts Jr. who led lap 1 over Smith and Boles. Roberts Jr., who was working the bottom of the track, and Smith, who was working the top, started to pull away from the battle behind them. Going into turn 1 on the final lap Smith was able to slip under Roberts Jr. to grab the top spot away coming off turn 2. Smith then held off Roberts Jr. coming off turn 4 to claim his first career Modified feature win, in a caution free race. Roberts Jr. settled for 2nd, Brandon Rothzen came from 7th to finish in 3rd, Dennis LaVeine came from 12th to finish in 4th, with Dugan Thye coming home in 5th.

Up next was the 20 lap Pepsi IMCA Stock Car feature, with Ray Raker and Cody Washburne making up the front row. Raker would take advantage of his starting spot to jump out front on lap 1 over Washburne and Dean Kratzer. Raker paced the field out front over the next 6 laps, as the rest of the field battled for position behind him. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 7, when Derek Schwandt spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Raker moved back out front, with Kratzer and Tom Bowling Jr., who started 7th, close behind. The close action up front was slowed for the second time on lap 10, when Washburne, who was running 5th, spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Raker once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Bowling Jr. and Jim Redmann following. One lap later, lap 12, Schwandt would spin in turn 1 to bring out his second solo caution of the race to end his night. On the restart Raker moved back out front, with Bowling Jr and John Oliver Jr., who started 8th, close behind. Raker, who was working the top of the track, had to work to hold off Bolwing Jr., who was on the bottom, Oliver Jr., who was up top, and Redmann, who was on the bottom. Bowling Jr. was able to get up beside Raker on lap 15, but Raker was able to hold him off. When Oliver Jr. used the momentum off turn 4 on lap 17 to grab second away from Bolwing Jr., this would allow Raker to go on to win his first of the season at the track. Bowling Jr. worked back under Oliver Jr. coming to the checkered flag to finish 2nd, Oliver Jr. was 3rd, Redmann was 4th, with Jake Wenig finishing 5th.

The Sonny’s Market 4 Cylinder 12 lap feature was the final one to take to the track. They would have troubles getting the feature going, as five cautions in the first 4 laps of the event slowed the action down. When the ambulance was called to the pits to care for someone, the race was called for the night. The rest of the 8 laps will be the first thing to run, with Austen Becerra, who was driving Daniel Fellows car, leading the race. Jake Dietrich is running 2nd, with Brandon Lambert running 3rd.
