Cutshaw takes featured USRA Mod victory as Ott, Marrant and Jackson also prevail at Lucas Oil Speedway

By Lyndal Scranton – Wheatland, Missouri (May 14, 2017) – The new season has produced familiar results in the Lucas Oil Speedway Pitts Homes USRA Modified division, with Saturday night the latest example of Jeff Cutshaw’s dominance.

Bolivar’s Cutshaw, the three-time reigning track champion, led all 25 laps to capture the $750-to-win highlight main event in a program presented by NMI/VMG Marketing Group and Wild Animal Safari.

Other winners as the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series returned for the first time since April 15 included Toby Ott (Big O Tires Street Stocks), Aaron Marrant (Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models) and Kris Jackson (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods).

Cutshaw won his second feature of 2017 in four tries to go with a third and a sixth. He already has opened a sizable points lead in pursuit of a fourth straight Lucas Oil Speedway championship.

Starting outside front row, Cutshaw got the jump on pole-sitter Jason Pursley and gradually drove off to a big lead. His margin was nearly a straightaway’s size over Pursley when the race’s lone caution flew on lap 16. That bunched the field, but Cutshaw was able to re-establish command after the restart.

Eric Turner got past fellow Hermitage resident Pursley over the final five laps and made a run at Cutshaw, but never could get close enough to threaten a pass.

“I didn’t know where everybody was there for a little bit. I didn’t know they were that close,” Cutshaw said of Turner. “I thought I’d better step it up there a little bit. I could feel somebody back there, but I didn’t know who it was for sure.

“I usually look up there at the scoreboard (above turn three) but I didn’t do it tonight.”

Pursley finished third for his second top-three of the season. Chase Domer wound up fourth with JC Morton in fifth.

Ott grabs first Street Stock feature win: Toby Ott celebrated his first career feature victory on his hometown track. While he led the final 18 circuits of the 20-lap feature, it was anything but easy.

Ott, of Wheatland, held off a hard-pressuring Marc Carter of Warrensburg who was on his back bumper over the final five laps.

“It feels great,” Ott said in victory lane. “I’ve raced here since about 2002. Lots of seconds and no wins. I’m kind of speechless, really.”

Ott, starting outside of row two, slipped past Carter with an outside pass for the lead to complete lap three and never gave it back. Ott was close to his first feature win back on April 15, but surrendered the lead late to James Flood. This time, he sealed the deal.

“I have a lot of support from fans and locals and it’s greatly appreciated,” Ott said. “We switched to a crate motor this year and it’s working out really well.”

Flood wound up in third, Bobby Barnett was fourth and Kenny Carroll fifth.

Marrant scores first ULMA win of season: Aaron Marrant took advantage of a mishap involving race-leader Dylan Hoover with six laps remaining and went on to capture his first feature win of the season.

“Everybody has stepped their game up in this class. There’s a lot of guys capable of winning every week,” Marrant said. “The track was really good tonight. You could move around. I moved to the top and it was working pretty good.”

Hoover grabbed the lead on lap four and held it until contact with Shad Badder on lap 14 sent Hoover spinning. That brought out the caution with Hoover re-starting at the rear of the field and Badder given the black flag and sent to the pits.

Richmond’s Marrant, the defending Lucas Oil Speedway ULMA Late Model track champ, inherited the lead with Binning and Aaron Poe behind him for the restart. Marrant opened a comfortable lead and breezed to his first win of the season.

“It’s good to finally win again,” Marrant said, noting his early results had not been up to par. “This class is getting really tough.”

Binning held on for second with fellow Warrensburg competitor Poe third and Shane Ehlert of Republic finishing in fourth. Hoover wound up 13th.

Sixteen-year-old Kaeden Cornell of Willard, making his Late Model debut, charged from a 17th-starting spot to finish eighth.

Kris Jackson prevails in B-Mods: Lebanon’s Kris Jackson made it two-for-two this season at Lucas Oil Speedway, leading flag-to-flag in capturing the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature.

“I want to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers here tonight,” said Jackson, joined in victory lane by wife Krystle. “The car was pretty good tonight. We’re on a pretty good hot streak right now.”

Jackson started on the pole and jumped to a quick lead and withstood three cautions to regain command each time on the restarts.

Andy Bryant of Fort Scott, Kan., finished second and JC Morton, who recently moved from Springfield to Springdale, Ark., wound up third. Morton was doing double duty, driving to top-five finishes in both Modified divisions.

Shawn Strong started ninth and finished fourth with veteran Rex Merritt of Billings charging from 10th to fifth.

Next up: The Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series resumes next Saturday, May 20. Ozarks Coca-Cola/Dr. Pepper Bottling along with KOLR 10 & Z27 team up to present a program featuring the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods running a special 25-lap, $500-to-win feature.

Fans can bring any empty 20-ounce Coca-Cola product bottle to the gate and receive $2 off general admission tickets. Limit is one per customer.
