May 28, 2017

After another week of wet, unpredictable weather in Central Missouri, the crew of Double-X Speedway was able to successfully host the 2017 edition of the “Tribute to Jesse and Daniel” at the track Jesse Hockett called home. Thanks to the efforts of the Hockett family and racing supporters this year was another stellar event honoring these two young men who left the racing scene too soon.

The most dear and special event to Jack Hockett was the special non wing sprint car race which he has organized for the past two years. A total of sixteen sprint drivers from both non wing and winged disciplines took the challenge to see who would prevail as the Jesse Hockett Non Wing Champion of Double-X Speedway. Taylor Walton and Chris Morgan led the field to the green flag for the 20 lap feature event. Walton would run the cushion and lead the first eight circuits. On lap nine in turn one he would slip over the berm in turn one and surrender a few spots. Cody Baker was able to take advantage and lead the remaining twelve laps. Morgan would finish second, Clinton Boyles came home third, Walton recovered to claim fourth and Quinton Benson completed the top five. Walton and Morgan would claim the two heat races.

The ASCS Warrior Region sprint cars were the featured division for the evening. These following information was provided by the ASCS web page.

Getting his first ASCS sanctioned victory of the 2017 season, Sedalia’s Jonathan Cornell made it career win No. 32 with the Speedway Motors ASCS Warrior Region presented by Impact Signs, Awnings, and Wraps at Double X Speedway in the annual Tribute to Jesse and Daniel. Going from the outer lane of the front row, Cornell never relinquished the lead during Saturday’s 25 lap A-Feature with the runner-up spot going to Kyle Bellm, who came through the field from the eighth starting spot. Lexington’s Brad Ryun was bronze on the finish. Fourth went to Taylor Walton and fifth to Cody Baker.  Evan Martin crossed sixth with Corey Nelson seventh. Taking the challenge to drop to the tail of the A-Main, Randy Martin made it back to eight from 20th; right where the California, Mo. native was scheduled to start originally. Miles Paulus from 17th was ninth with Tyler Black also charging hard from 18th to tenth.

In the 600cc Micro Sprint division, 35 drivers checked in for the evening’s event. Making his annual visit to Double X Speedway, Albequerque, New Mexico driver Derrik Ortega led from the green and survived a multitude of caution flag laps to secure the victory in the 20 lap main event. With many new drivers at the track the class saw a lot of racing on the night. Following Ortega under the checkered was last week’s feature winner Jack Wagner who continues to rack up top five finishes, Samuel Wagner followed in third, Braydon Cromwell completed the Lone Jack trifecta with a fourth place showing and Quinn Jones was fifth in feature action. Sixth place was claimed by Jimmy Dowell, Caitlin Boland was seventh, Aubrey Smith crossed the line eighth, Matthew Watkins was ninth and Jordan Howell completed the top ten. Heat races were claimed by Ortega, Nathan Benson and Cromwell with Chase Porter claiming the B feature.

Harlan Dowell continues his winning ways in the Street Stock Division picking up the feature win. Former weekly competitor Steve Beach provided some challenges but was no match for Dowell’s number 29.  Following Beach in second, Evan Hays had a very good run in third, Destiny Dowell had another good showing in claiming fourth and Mark Davis completed the top five. Harlan Dowell also claimed the heat race victory.

In the Hobby Stock division it looked like Mike Schrader was going to go for his third feature win in a row but an altercation with the back stretch wall ended his bid for victory. Chuck Coffey was able to pass two in the season, Chris Brockert ran a strong second to the winner, Jeremiah Wallingford continues to show progress in claiming third. Schrader claimed the division heat race.

Next Sunday night brings the “Dylan Bias Memorial Street Stock Spectacular” with over $5000 in purse to be paid out in the Street Stock division that evening. The feature event is scheduled to pay $1250 to win, $100 to start the A, heat races will pay to win and there will also be a $500 Dash for Cash. Dylan’s family and friends have worked very hard to bring this event to the fans and drivers so please make plans to attend. Winged Sprint cars, 600cc Micro Sprints and Hobby Stocks are also on the card. For more information on this very special event please refer to the Double-X Speedway Fan Page on Facebook.
