Unsanctioned: Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mod-Lites, B-Mods, and Pure Stocks

(Warrensburg, MO) The regular race season came to a close in a big way as 97 drivers checked in to Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) for night two of the annual Labor Day weekend special events. Among competitors on hand were 12 E-Mods, 21 ULMA Late Models, 36 B-Mods, and 28 Modifieds.

Modified drivers were gunning for a $3,000 payday while B-Mods competed in their second-consecutive $1,000-to-win track special. The night also served as the conclusion of the regular race season at CMS after a successful season before the staff regroups one more time for the upcoming Second-Annual Street Stock Showdown in mid-September.

To sort out the lineups for the main-event starting grids, drivers competed in preliminary heat races beginning with the guest class E-Mod drivers. Sturgis Streeter collected the first checkered flag of the evening by going the distance ahead of Leroy Morrison while Shawn Burns took the second heat with Steven Makar in second.

The B-mod competition got underway with Grinnell, Iowa driver Brett Lowry taking the win over Jim Moody in heat one, Patrick Royalty was looking to make it two-in-a-row for the weekend and began strong with a heat win in the second prelim over Cody Brill. For heat three it was Dakota Foster taking the checkers with Jeremy Lile in second. The final heat belonged to Jake Richards ahead of Gunner Martin. B-Main victories went to Steve McDowell and Doug Wetzel.

In ULMA Late Model action, three heat races were completed with Aaron Marrant tracking down Jon Binning late in the race to take the win with Binning second. Johnny Fennewald flew from the inside of row three to the front of the field in heat two for the win over Cole Henson. For the final heat, Browning, Missouri’s Tommy Cordray bolted to the victory over Dustin Hodges.

Modifieds finished the prelim action with two heats with Nathan Vaughn going to victory in the first prelim over Jim Moody while Jimmy Dowell ran strong for the victory in heat two over Kyle Westerhold. In the 20-lap scramble to determine the final starting positions for the main event later in the night, Johnny Fennewald took the victory ahead of Dalton Kirk.

Main Events Recap: The second half main-event portion of the program began with E-mods hitting the track for their 15-lap main event. It was an exciting race for drivers and fans as Shawn Burns shot out to an early race lead ahead of Sturgis Streeter and Leroy Morrison. For a while it appeared that Burns would return to victory lane for a second time but as the laps wore on, Streeter showed some speed and moved to the front ahead of Burns and Morrison. Meanwhile, Kit Bailey moved forward in the lineup to blast into the top five; however, when the race concluded it was Streeter enjoying the victory lane celebration with his first-ever CMS win ahead of Burns, Morrison, Bailey, and a strong run by Jessie Mulich in fifth.

For the $1,000-to-win B-Mod special, the drivers and fans alike experienced and witnessed one of the best races of the entire season with clean and close-quarters racing near the front of the field in the exciting 25-lap event! Jeremy Lile and Dakota Foster started the event on row one with Foster taking command until an early caution flag by lap three. After the restart, Foster again was solid through another quick caution at the lap-five marker. Once the field went back to green-flag racing, a long run of racing took place and this is when things really picked up. Lap-after-lap, the night one winner, Patrick Royalty reeled in and then eventually passed Foster for the lead by lap fourteen. Meanwhile, newly crowned Track Champion Seven Clancy and long-distance traveler Brett Lowry of Iowa pulled up to make it a four-car race for the win as the drivers raced close quarters giving each other room in a near-perfect display of professionalism and respect on the track with the crowd showing their appreciation cheering them on! Lile stayed in the mix until he was heartbreakingly forced to retire for the night as the leaders carried on after a lap 17 caution. Then, the furious battle continued as Foster, catfishing the low side eventually moved back to the front, in which he ultimately went on to capture the victory, just edging Royalty at the line as the pair came to the checkers nearly side-by-side for the finish. Clancy was third with Lowry a strong fourth followed by Gunner Martin, who advanced forward to make it a solid top-five effort in his substitute driving role.

ULMA Late Models finished their CMS season strong with the strong field of drivers on hand for the 20-lap main event. Johnny Fennewald and Aaron Marrant occupied row one to start the race ahead of Tommy Cordray and Cole Henson. In the close-quarters matchup. Marrant and Fennewald raced close at the front until Marrant emerged as the front-runner through the early stages. Meanwhile, Henson and Cordray along with Cody Holtkamp, Dustin Hodges, Jon Binning, and Kaeden Cornell fought hard to occupy positions in the top five. An unfortunate incident near the back of the field interrupted an otherwise great night of action for the drivers as contact in turn four collected the top three drivers and four other competitors. All involved were charged with being involved in the caution after either stopping on the track, tires leaving the racing surface on the inside or outside of the track, or coming to a complete stop, or doing a 360-spin, which is loss of forward momentum according to the CMS rules. After the race was realigned and restarted, it was Russellville, Missouri’s Henson took command with Aaron Poe moving into second. As the laps wore down, Binning came to life and advanced positions to the top three behind Poe. Kaeden Cornell was also strong inside the top five with Holtkamp in the mix as well. Ultimately, Henson, who had very limited experience at CMS behind the wheel of a Street Stock, went on to collect his first-ever ULMA and CMS win over Poe, Binning, Cornell, and Holtkamp to complete the top five. An anonymous donor made things a little better at the pay window as each driver received the benefits of the donation when pay was collected.

The final event of the night was the 35-lap, $3,000-to-win Modified main event, which served as the final Modified special of the year at CMS. Night one scramble winner and runner-up finisher Darron Fuqua and Terry Schultz began the event on row one with Schultz taking command early on. A quick restart at the start of the race saw Schultz lead the way as Jesse Willard and Chad Lyle were early retirees from the event. With Schultz out front, Fuqua stayed close through lap six as the pair tried to distance themselves from any pursuers. Close-quarters racing then ensued with two lanes of great action until Fuqua advanced forward to grab the lead on lap ten as Schultz dropped to second. Kevin Blackburn advanced from ninth to third by the first third of the race with Jason Pursley also experiencing a stellar run to the top five. Meanwhile, Dean Wille, Randall Schiffelbein, Jr., and Johnny Fennewald also fought hard for a top-five run. Caution flew again on lap 14 for a quick spin and then racing resumed with Fuqua and Schultz going back to work at the front. Nathan Vaughn and Brian Johnson retired from the event at the second third of the race. Wille and Pursley were going after it for the battle for fourth while Blackburn then pressured Schultz for the second spot. In lapped traffic, Blackburn then moved to second and began clicking off some quick laps to shorten the gap between himself and leader Fuqua. Caution flew a final time with five laps remaining setting up a quick dash to the finish. Fuqua motored off turn four to lead the charge with Blackburn and Schultz in hot pursuit. However, Blackburn’s chances of taking the victory came up just a bit short as Fuqua swept the weekend victories by claiming the win over Blackburn, Schultz, Pursley, and Wille by race end.

Coming Up Next: The final race of the season takes place at CMS on Friday, September 3rd and Saturday, September 4th for the Second-Annual Street Stock Showdown. Action begins with three rounds of heat races for the Street Stocks on Friday when B-Mods and Mod-Lites also compete throughout the night. Then, on Saturday the weekend concludes with Street Stocks returning for B-Mains and the $5,000-to-win Showdown. Mod-Lites and B-Mods round out the program with another night of heats and main events. On both nights, Pits open at 4:30, Grandstands at 5, Driver Pill Draw Cutoff at 6:15, Pit Meeting at 6:30, Hot Laps at 7, and Racing at 7:30.
