VanderBeek, Huls, Van Der Wal, Hughes, and Fullenkamp Close Out the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway With Wins

by Brian Neal

Memphis, MO (Saturday, October 20, 2018) – Saturday, October 20th was not only the final night of the Fall Nationals, it was also the final event at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri for the 2018 season. With a brisk wind out of the north and the forecast for falling temperatures all day long, the decision was made to move the start time up to 3 PM. One hundred thirteen cars returned for the final night, with Zack VanderBeek (Modifieds), Abe Huls (Stock Cars), Curtis Van Der Wal (SportMods), Mike Hughes (Hobby Stocks), and Chuck Fullenkamp (Sport Compacts) standing in victory night.

The 15 lap Hobby Stock feature was first up, after 13 heat races and 2 B-Mains were ran to help set up the starting fields for the features. Bobby Greene and John Irwin would lead the field to green, but it was fourth place starter Mike Hughes who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Greene and Irwin. The action was slowed for the first time on lap 3, when Shawn Ritter, who was running 2nd, got sideways in turn 2 and collected Irwin to bring out the yellow. On the restart Hughes moved back out front, with Ritter quickly come from the rear after the spin to grab second over Greene. Two laps later, lap 7, Jason Rindom spun in turn 4 to bring out the final caution of the race. Hughes once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Greene and Jake Benischek over taking Riiter for second and third. While Hughes pulled away from the field, Benischek, Greene and Ritter raced three wide for the runner up spot over the final laps of the race.  Without another caution to slow the action, Hughes would go on to pick up his second win of the weekend. Greene won the battle for 2nd, Ritter was 3rd, Benischek was 4th, with Scott Shull coming from 9th to finish in 5th.

Up next was the 22 lap Stock Car feature, with David Brandies and Todd Reitzler drawing the front row for the event. Reitzler took advantage of his starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Brandies and Cayden Carter. The action was slowed for the first time on lap 6, when Johnny Spaw, who was running 3rd, spun in turn 2 and collected the lap car of Brandon Lambert to bring out the yellow. On the restart Reitzler jumped back out front, with Abe Huls, who started 8th, using the top of the track to grab second from Brandies. Huls then tried to work under Reitzler over the next 5 laps, but Reitzler was able to hold him off. Then going into turn 3 to come and complete lap 13, Huls went low and then slid up in front of Reitzler coming off turn 4 to grab the lead away. Two laps later, lap 15, Justin Coon spun in turn 2 to bring out the second caution of the race. On the restart Lambert spun in turn 1 to bring the yellow light back on. The next restart saw Howard Gordon Jr., who was running 9th, spin into the turn 1 guardrail to bring out the yellow. On the following restart Huls moved back out front, with Rietzler and John Oliver Jr., who started 11th, close behind. The final caution of the race appeared on lap 19, as Brandies, who was battling for 6th, got into the turn 1 guardrail to bring out the yellow. Huls once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Reitzler and Carter following. On this night Huls was to strong, as he pulled away to pick up the win and the $1,500 check. Reitzler was 2nd, Carter was 3rd, Oliver Jr. was 4th, with Spaw recovering from his spin on lap 6 to come back up to finish 5th.

Jake Dietrich and Barry Taft drew the front row for the 15 lap Sport Compact feature, with Taft using his starting spot to lead lap 1 over Dietrich and Trent Orwig. Taft then had to work to hold back Orwig over the next 3 laps. But Orwig would use the momentum off the top of turn 4 on lap 5 to edge out Taft at the line for the top spot. Taft stayed glued to Orwig’s back bumper over the next 6 laps, as Chuck Fullenkamp joined the battle for the lead. On lap 12 Taft edged back out front, only to loose the lead to Fullenkamp on lap 13. Taft and Orwig tried to work past Fullenkamp over the final laps, but Fullenkamp held them off to claim the win. Taft was 2nd, Orwig was 3rd, Luke Benischek started 7th and finished 4th, with Tyler Haring coming home in 5th.

Up next was the 20 lap SportMod feature, with Josh Roney and Brandon Dale on the front row for the event. Roney would use his starting spot to his advantage by moving out front on lap 1 over Dale and Brayton Carter. The action was slowed for the first time of the race on lap 5, when Tyler Titus spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Roney jumped back out front, with Carter and Dale close behind. One lap later, lap 7, Adam Birck, who was running 10th, spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Once again Roney grabbed the lead on the restart, with Carter and Dale following. Carter would slip under Roney coming off turn 4 to complete lap 11. But before they got to the strip the caution waved for James Roose’s spin in turn. This would give Roney the lead back for the restart, who led Carter and Andrew Schroeder when the green waved. The final caution of the race appeared on lap 14, when Logan Anderson spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Curtis Van Der Wal, who started 16th, slid from the bottom up in front of Roney coming off turn 4 to take over the top spot on lap 15. Van Der Wal then pulled away over the final 5 laps to score the win and the $1,500 check. Roney was 2nd, Carter was 3rd, Hunter Longnecker started 8th and finished 4th, with Dale rounding out the top 5.

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 25 lap Modifieds, with Cayden Carter and Zack VanderBeek leading the field to green. Carter would lead the field into turn 1 in the lead, but VanderBeek would slip under him coming off turn 2 to lead lap 1. The action up front was slowed for the first and only time on lap 5, when Justin Veloz slowed to a stop in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart VanderBeek jumped back out front, with Michael Long over taking Carter for the runner up spot.  A couple of laps later Carter was able to get second back from Long and then went to work on VanderBeek for the lead. The top two cars would pull away from the rest of the field over the final laps of the race, with VanderBeek going on to pick up the win and the $1,600 prize to go with it. Carter was 2nd, Long was 3rd, Chad Melton from Mineral Wells, Texas finished 4th after starting in 10th, with Kurt Kile coming from 11th to finish in 5th.

Plans are already in the works for the 2019 season at the Pepsi Scotland Speedway. So stay tuned to their Facebook page for more information to be released, as they are finalized.
