Lake Hill Speedway?

I would like to correct some information that I had in one of my previous posts.
It has to do with my fading memory with regards to a well know racer’s sponsor from the early days at Lake Hill

After a conversation with another old time fan of the track, we came to the same conclusion that it was not “QUALITY TRANSMISSION” that was one of the sponsor’s on CARL SPRINGER’S car’s, indeed it was probably “FRANK JOLLER” or “F JOLLER TRANSMISSION SERVICE” . I knew that Carl was a transmission mechanic but my friend believes that Carl worked for F. JOLLER.
He’s probably right and I have to take a bath on this one!!!! Heck guys, it’s been 46 years ago!!!!!
Hey, what do ya expect from an old bald headed chicken plucker!!!!

Has any one mentioned the names of these old time ALLIED officials from the days past ?? I remember the names, but I did not know these gentlemen
ART MONNIG------ timer and checker (spl)
BOB BATTLEFELD--------SECRETARY (spl)
GENE MINIEX-- (spl)

With 150+ replies and 7500 views, I'm thinking have everyone on here help you clean it up, put a fresh layer of asphalt on it, and "Lets Go Racing"!!! :D

Build it and they will come!

More Lake Hill Memories

In a previous post I mentioned a driver from the early 60’s by the name of
BOBBY NEUSCHE, # 27. I remember his coupe always being purple in color and I now remember one of the sponsors on the car. It was “GORDON’S STOPLIGHT
DRIVE INN”. “STOPLIGHT”, as it know to the natives, is a hamburger joint at the intersection of Main Street and Hwy 61-67, in Festus./Crystal City, Mo.. The owner of his race car , at that time, as I have previously mentioned, was a car salesman by the name of JOE “BLACKIE” VALECK, and I believe he sold FORDS for the local Ford in Festus, which would have been FRED ISENMAN FORD

“STOPLIGHT” as probably a lot of you know, is a landmark in the Festus /Crystal City area. If you have never had a Stoplight burger, you need to make it one of your missions in life to get one!!! Their pretty dang Good!!. The place has been there for , I know for sure at least 44 years!!!. They must be doing something right!!

Hope we can catch all those FISH at the “HILL” on Sunday!!!

In one of the many posts I saw mentioned Harold Workman and Bill Workman. Actually it was Harold and Don Workman not Bill. They were always driving some of the best looking and fast late models back in the day. Don just passed away in recent years.

That is correct on the Workman's names being Harold and Don. (first its Ginko Biloba for the memory and then viagra for the, well..)

Not saying Lenny is wrong about the Collinsville deal, but I thought they (the Workmans) lived in Webster Groves for some reason. Seems like Marshal Yost did too.

1973 I was a senoir in high school and I worked at the Sunoco station at Big Bend & Elm in webster Groves and every sunday afternoon Harold Workman would pull in and gas his camaro late model up with 260. He towed on an open trailer with if I remember right a spotless white cadilac and the crew with him wore white uniforms. Not sure where he lived at the time but it had to be the Kirkwood/webster/crestwood area. I do know for a fact that he lived/Lives in the Kirkwood/Sunset Hills area after he quit driving. For the folks who never got to see this guy run Let me tell you he was impressive.

My dad actually stopped by there yesterday and talked to the guy that owns it. He said it is really grown up bad. Water is about halfway down the racing surface. There are trees growing up through the pavement. He said there was a handful of people there but didnt see anyone fishing.

Curt Allen #93
Dwight Barbeau #81
Dan Banderat #17
Willie Johnston #26

My aunt wanted me to ask if anyone knows how Kenny Schrum got his # of 66/99? Thanks-Danny

6699

Growing up around racing all of my life and around kenny i heard that came about that he would be #66 if he was right side up or upside down:cool:

You are right.

While I love the powerful late models, those were good days with Schrum, Eby, Willie Johnston, etc. :)

Anybody ever go to the DeSoto track? I lived in St. Louis and my dad would take me there. I thought we were going to another state....now I live down the road and drive to St. Louis to work and think it's just a jog up the road.

This is my first time on STL, but have totally enjoyed all the talk about the old time racing days. I have some old pictures of Eby, (I was his #1 fan) Schrum and a few others. I will have my nephew Danny help me scan them and try to post them.

Amen (old days)

My dad got into racing in 68 or 69 at lakehill my uncle drove the car Jerry DeJohn We then moved to Harvester Mo 1.6 miles from St Charles Speedway Kenny Schrum was my hero I would always ride in his cars after the races We continued to race up to the 80's Denny Schrum drove for us one year in b cars Rowdy Rick Rowland,Bobby Regot I found some old pictures the other day Lake Hill ,Belleville St Charles will try to scan and post

My buddy Rams#20 clued me into this thread, what great memories. Thanks for posting it up.

I used to work for Bill Schrader in the early 80's at the shop, my first car was painted in Bill Broz' shop next door... we borrowed Kenny Schrader's house for a party after our senior prom since he was out racing... oh the memories. Come to think of it I wonder if Kenny knew we took the party to his house. :D

I'll call my buddy John Schrader (Bill's son) and see if he's aware of this and post back up. I wonder if his uncle Kenny knows about this the reunion?!? I'll try to find out! Thank you KEG for making this happen.

I CAN REMEMBER JERRY DEJOHN DRIVING A #53 LIMITED SPORTSMAN AT BELLEVILLE. HE WON THE FEATURE ONE NIGHT AND GOT OUT ON TOP OF THE CAR JUMPING AROUND AND ACTING CRAZY. I BELIEVE BUSCH BEER WAS ON THE CAR. I WAS JUST A KID AT THE TIME, BUT JUST HAPPEN TO REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU MENTIONED THE NAME.

More Lake Hill Memories

I was there this past Sunday and the place is in real bad repair from its glory days. The Track is still there but the stands are gone and a lot of the inside wall has all but come apart I have about 50 pictures and I think I will give a copy of them to J. Dearing on this Saturday night and he can post them on here as he see’s fit. I don’t know how to get them on here myself. Like was stated, there are large trees growing up thru the racing surface. I spoke with the new owner K E G and he seems like his still going to have this reunion day, so I hope it all comes together in the fall. I found a piece of history in behind turn one wall, a section of tail light it appears to be from a 66 or 67 chevelle, and it is purple. Can’t even imagine whose car it came off of or what year? It has been about 33/35 years since I have been in the Speedway. It was like walking into a time warp, for sure. In the mid to late 70’s, I had to stop being a regular fan because of growing up issues----

Here are 2 more drivers’ names that I remember----
Rich Broderick---Had a red coupe, powered by a Ford. Rich worked in the service dept. at Sunset Ford. I think his number was 72 or 74
Dorland (or Garland) Weatherford (spl)

Remember how much attention that a driver named DANNY MOSER, (FARMINGTON MO) caused when he introduced a chassis called TOBIAS CHASSIS, Wasn’t he the first??? TOBY TOBIAS was a chassis builder on the east coast and I think Danny had the first one here in the mid-west. I may have to take a hike on this, but I think my memory is good on this one.

I remember the announcer saying these words every Sunday.
“WOULD THE TRACK ELECTRICAN PLEASE TURN ON THE SPEEDWAY LIGHTS”.
And at the end of the evening he would tell us “REMEMBER LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LEAVE THE RACING FOR THE RACE DRIVERS HERE AT THE SPEEDWAY” (or something to that effect)

I am pretty sure that announcer was Bruce Humphrey, but I could be wrong. You know, it’ the age thing again!!!!

With regard to Desoto Speedway, I remember EVERET FORSHEE, being one of the top dog’s there. One year DON KLEIN drove a 32 FORD COUPE, number 28, of course that was built and wrenched by the BERRY BROS. in Desoto Mo.
This coupe was powered by a 300 ci Ford SIX, with 3, yes 3, side draft Weber Carbs!!!! (Trust me; it was way more then 300 cubes!!!!!!!) This car, with Donny driving, smoked all the other race cars that had V- 8 power. It sounded like an INDY CAR. I think Donny won the track championship in that car, but I don’t remember how many years he ran at DESOTO, with that coupe.

In reference to HAROLD WORKMAN. Harold and his wife
ELIZABETH, lived off S GEYER rd. in KIRKWOOD,MO. ELIZABETH was in Real Estate sales and was a very attractive red- headed lady. I know which house he lived in , but I don’t know the address. Harold was a OPERATING ENGINEER and I know he operated a large track crane for FRUIN- COLIN or MILLSTONE, or McCarthy or one of the big constructors, (His brother DON, operated a large crane for J. S. ALBERCHI) BUTCH COOLEY operated a large crane for JOHN J. SMITH MASONARY CO. I had heard in the early 90”s that Harold retired and was living in Palm Springs Calif. I don’t know any more then that. Yes, he did indeed have good looking race cars and trailers . A white Caddy was mentioned as a tow vehicle and You could be right,(probally are, ) but I thought he towed with a red and white Ford pickup. Yeh, but a white caddy would have been Harold’s style!!

Weatherford I believe was #66. I mainly remember him from Belleville. I was the #1 Eby fan and did not think Weatherford could drive too well and always thought he was in Ebys way.

Anyway one night at Belleville Weatherford's car came over the fence in turn 3 and into the stand. Luckily he was not hurt bad, I believe a broken collar bone or something.

As to Danny Mosier #37 my nephew was a big fan of his.
