Depends on what you consider "cost prohibitive"
In the grand scheme of a race car DOM is not very expensive. Some sanctioning bodies wont allow electric weld tubing. I guess its best to check the rule books, your budget, and go from there.

Some sanctioning bodies require different types of tubing, however, I would like to use DOM.
