Inside Line Promotions - HUGOTON, Kan. (July 29, 2015) - Zach Blurton scored his third win in the last seven races last weekend to cap a URSS Kansas Region doubleheader.
Blurton, who entered the weekend leading the region's championship standings, earned a pair of top-10 finishes to give him 17 top 10s in 18 races this season.
The weekend opened on Friday when Blurton advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan. That locked him into the feature redraw, which lined him up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.
"Friday didn't go very well," he said. "It was one of those nights where we just hung on. The car wasn't very good. I got up to sixth in the feature, but my brakes went out halfway through it. I was having to use them so much to keep it around the bottom and I faded back to eighth."
Blurton rebounded the ensuing night at Dirtona Raceway, where he placed fourth and first, respectively, during a twin heat race format. He then finished second in the dash before lining up on the outside of the second row for the 15-lap main event.
"We decided to throw everything we had at it," he said. "We changed three bars and all four shocks. We tried something totally different for a slick track. It ended up working really good. Now I feel we have a decent slick track setup where we usually struggle on a slick track."
Blurton maneuvered into the runner-up position on the opening lap before chasing down the leader several laps into the feature.
"I found my line and got my groove down," he said. "I found out how hard I could run with this car. About five laps into it I took the lead. With five laps to go we had a restart. The car took right off and we won by a straightaway."
The triumph was Blurton's third of the season.
He is set to tackle a pair of URSS National events this Friday at Rush County Speedway in LaCrosse, Kan., and Saturday at Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kan.
"At Belleville I think I've led more laps there than anyone who hasn't won a race," he said. "My first year there I led 20 of the 25 laps. My second year I led all but three of the laps. Last year I led probably 10 laps. We always end up getting beat by Luke Cranston. He's really good there. I've ran second to him like six times. One of these times it's going to work out for us."
Blurton currently ranks fourth in the national championship standings - only 18 points out of the lead.
