Nice looking car. I didn't see it run, but sure enjoyed watching Cliff drive anything. I am glad to learn this history, and can't wait for more pictures! I will try and post a few that I have.

Great picture of a classic from the golden age of racing. I don't remember this particular car, but am well aware of Cliff and Frank. I loved the Dee and Hodge #38 that Frank drove with a wing to the rear of the roof . I also loved watching Cliff in the Gold #2 Edmonds Supermodified. He and Gene...

Hey Bryan How can I get in touch with Duck? I remember him, and the car on the pole. It was what first caught my eye when I moved to the area when I was 11. I remember his tan wrecker at the Du Quoin State Fair races. I would love to get hold of some old Turnpike Photos. Thanks, Jim

I watched all three last night. They brought back a lot of memories. I just lived about 3 miles from Turnpike as a kid, and went to as many races as I could talk my parents into. I made several trips to Haubstadt too. Never saw Centralia, so that was cool too. Gary Easton was a good racer and a...

Oh my gosh yes, Debbie I do remember you. Wow! Those were some great old days. I had several race track friends, including my best friend the late Terry Sprague, Glenna Powell, Ricky Deaton, Randy Dees, Dean Taylor and Jane from Thompsonville and her nephews Rick and Randy. We were regulars at...

Hi Bud, I remember your nice white coupe, the #49 driven by Richard Rogers. As a kid, I built a model car of it. I like your pictures you've posted here, but I am unable to save them off to my computer for use on my screensaver. If you could send me any old photos you have of the old coupes, I...

The Williamson County Speedway at the Fairgrounds operated on the 1/4 mile track from from 1968 thru 1970. Then Dick and Sarah Poe took over Turnpike Speedway and renamed it Williamson County Speedway. There sure were some great races at the old Fairgrounds in the short time it was there.

I believe the Marion owner was Bob Karnes, and the K9 was driven by Billy Joe Murphy. Busy Bee Market or Laundry was the sponsor.

Here are some other modified coupe drivers from those days: Richard, Corky and Bob Rider, Jim McCoy, Cotton Hargis, Johnnie Houghland, Bill and Loren Millikin, Gary Beattie, Richard Lence, Ronnie Weekly. I talked to Mr. John Kemp at Gateway a couple of years ago. Nice man, and good to reminisce...

Hi Ross- I know it is quite past the time you inquired, but I have and archive of newspaper clippings, Pit Stops, and a few pictues from the day. I can send you a list of my archived materials if you give me your e-mail address. I watched your grandpa in many exciting races. I lived very close...

    Marion, IL - Turnpike Speedway

I used to work at Turnpike after your grandpa and grandma took it over and name it Williamson County Speedway. The fairgrounds had closed the 1/4 mile track that they ran, and so they took over Turnpike. I worked in the infield concession stand for a couple of years. I used to make models of...

    Marion, IL - Turnpike Speedway

I am looking for it on Google maps but don't know if I see it for sure. Is it east or west of Race Track Rd? I see something that looks like an oval off the road to the east, across from Copple Road. Is that it? I never went to it when it was open.

Hi Gary I remember you. I was working in the pit concessions then, as a teenager. I remember you taking pictures and you would perch up on the light towers to watch the races. I also remember seeing many of your photos posted in the Communications Building at SIU because I was a student there at...
