Clint Smith of Senoia, Georgia captured his second World of Outlaws Late Model Series sanctioned main event of the season Friday grabbing Round 1 of ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts at Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker (Baton Rouge), Lousiana. Starting from the pole aboard the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Smith-Passmore Racing GRT Race Cars/RaceTek Engines Pontiac GTO ‘Cat Daddy’ led the first two laps of the $10,000 to win affair before losing the lead to Chub Frank on lap 3. Smith stayed right with Frank regaining the lead on lap 6 then held off Chris Wall by .238 seconds for the victory. Shane Clanton rode home third with Chub Frank fourth and Dale McDowell fifth. Completing the top ten finishers were Steve Francis in sixth followed by Billy Moyer, Tim McCreadie, Rick Eckert and Darrell Lanigan.

“We’re tickled to death to get this win tonight”, said Smith. “We had big problems during qualifying where we almost broke the engine. We only took that one lap and came in and fixed it. That didn’t get us a front row spot for the heat race and we had to come from behind. That move we made in the heat race to get the lead, that move there was what won the race for us tonight. When you get out front here you can sorta’ control your own destiny. If we hadn’t won that heat race I don’t know if we’d be talking right now.”

The event was co-sanctioned with the SUPR Late Model Series and Wall was the only SUPR driver to finish in the top twelve. The Holden, Louisiana driver took the runner-up spot on lap 11 from Frank and actually got under Smith a few times but couldn’t find enough room to pass for the lead. Wall, driving the C&M Gator Farms/Gator Trax Boats No. 71 Wall Racing MasterSbilt Race Cars/Wall 2 Wall Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was ecstatic with his runner-up finish.

“It’s just an honor to run with the World of Outlaws guys”, said Wall. “We’ve had the opportunity to run with these guys a few times the past year or so and to finish up front with these guys is pretty awesome. To run up front is special and finish second in a World of Outlaws race we’re just tickled pink.”

When asked if he thought he may have had a chance at pulling off the upset Wall replied, “Well I don’t know. I mean the track started to get one groove and really didn’t lend itself to passing. If the groove I liked would’ve stayed there longer I really think we may have given Clint a run for the money. But, to run second with these guys is pretty special.”

Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Georgia drove the RSD Enterprises/SAE Parts No. 25 Ronnie Dobbins Enterprises Rocket Chassis/Custom Racing Engines Pontiac GTO to a third place finish continuing his string of solid finishes during the early part of the season. Clanton was satisified with the ‘show’ finish but felt he may have had a chance at the win before the track went away.

“I think we may have had a better car than Clint and Chris if the track would’ve stayed like it was during the early laps”, stated Clanton. “When a track rubbers up it’s hard to pass. I know the track crew worked their butts off trying to give us a good track and make a good race for us and the fans. But it’s hard to work with sand. There isn’t much you can do there.”

The SRO crowd on hand at Baton Rouge Raceway saw Smith get the jump on outside front row starter Clanton at the drop of the green flag. Frank motored past Clanton for the second spot as the field exited turn two on the opening lap. Not only did Clanton see Frank move past him on the opening circuit he also saw Billy Moyer and Wall motor past.

Smith lost the lead working lap 3 when Frank shot to the inside of Smith exiting turn two. Smith kept glued to Frank working him high and low before regaining the lead with 5 laps down. Wall moved past Moyer for third on lap 7 with Clanton shuffling Moyer back a spot the next lap. Moyer continued to backslide as McDowell took the fifth spot on the next go round.

With 10 laps down Smith carried a two car advantage on Frank with Wall putting heavy pressure on Frank as the leaders bore down on the back of the field. Using the traffic Wall slipped past Frank for the runner-up spot on lap 11 and two laps later Clanton worked his way to third.

The heavy traffic in front of the leaders kept things interesting. Wall tried to get under Smith but the veteran was up to the challenge. At the halfway mark Smith held a narrow lead on Wall with Clanton lurking ahead of Frank and McDowell. Francis was now sixth with Moyer seventh, McCreadie eighth, Eckert ninth and Lanigan tenth.

The traffic cleared for Smith and the leaders on lap 30 when a turn one three car tangle between Ronnie Adams, John Blankenship and Keith Craft got the yellow lights flashing. With a clear track ahead for the restart Smith powered away from Wall who now had his hands full with Clanton. Clanton made a move for the runner-up spot on lap 37 but Wall closed the door keeping Clanton at bay. The field again would be slowed at lap 46 when Phillip Cooper spun in turn three. The four lap dash to the finish was all Smith despite Wall’s efforts to catch the leader.

The $45,000 purse event attracted 41 drivers to the semi-banked ¼ mile speedway with Moyer earning time trial honors with a fast lap of 15.52 seconds. Moyer, Clanton, Frank and Smith garnered heat race wins while Garrett Durrett and Rob Litton took the ‘B’ Mains and Smith copped the dash.
