BEAR LAKE, PA – Sept. 7, 2011 – Chub Frank is going to turn some heads during this weekend’s 41st annual World 100 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio – hopefully with an up-front run, and definitely with his race car.
The popular 49-year-old veteran from Bear Lake, Pa., plans to continue his recent tradition of unveiling a fresh new color scheme on his car for the running of dirt Late Model racing’s marquee event. This year his Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota/Horton Equipment Rocket No. 1* will carry a bright orange hue when he takes to the high-banked, half-mile oval in pursuit of the World 100’s $44,000 top prize.
“It’s gonna look good,” promised Frank, who won the World 100 in 2004. “One thing about it – you will not miss the race car on the racetrack. If you don’t see it, there’s something wrong with you. It’s going to stand out.”
Frank’s distinctive new machine will be featured on an array of apparel for sale throughout the World 100 weekend at the Slavic Corporation merchandise trailer located outside turns one and two of the speedway. Orders for diecasts of Frank’s car will also be taken.
Driving the orange mount into contention for World 100 glory will be Frank’s goal this weekend. He’s confident in his chances at the Big E, which hosts time trials on Friday night (Sept. 9) and heats, last-chance races and the 100-lap feature on Saturday evening (Sept. 10).
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Frank. “It’s still Eldora – you have to be lucky. But you also have to put yourself in position to be lucky by qualifying well enough to get in the (heat-race) invert, and I haven’t been able to even do that lately. We’ve done some things to the car, though, that I think will make it better for qualifying and give us a shot.”
Frank enters the World 100 after spending the Labor Day weekend racing at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.Va. He began his two-night stay at the quarter-mile oval with a disappointing DNQ outing in the UFO Series ‘West Virginia State Championship’ event on Friday night; his night basically went south when he pulled on the track for his heat race already one lap down because a communication mixup with officials caused him to report late (he was parked in a remote part of the pits and wasn’t summoned to the lineup area by an official). ‘Chubzilla’ fared better in Saturday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Black Diamond 125,’ however; he finished eighth – thanks to a last-lap pass – in the first 40-lap Qualifying Feature to earn the race’s final transfer spot into the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ finale, a 45-lap, $20,000-to-win shootout in which he placed a disappointing 13th after leading laps 1-3 from the outside pole starting spot.
“We were horrible and I pulled in,” Frank said of his performance in the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ headliner. “We were actually horrible in the Qualifying Feature too, but we were able to get up to eighth and make it into the big one. We made a big change and tried something different for the last race, but it didn’t work.
“If there would’ve been a restart every three laps we would’ve been O.K., but that wasn’t happening,” joked Frank.
