SARVER, PA (May 25) – Steve Kinser passed Sammy Swindell late in the 22nd lap and took the checkered flag with nine car-lengths to spare to win the Commonwealth Clash at Lernerville Speedway Tuesday, five years to the day after his last victory at Sarver’s half-mile oval.

The $10,000 victory was the sixth of the season for the World of Outlaws Sprint Series standings leader, who increased his advantage to 67 points over Danny Lasoski. "The King of the Outlaws" won every race he entered: the Fourth Heat Race, the First Dash Race and the 35-lap "A" Feature.

"I think the track was in better shape than I’ve seen it here in a long time," Kinser said following his 13th main event victory at Lernerville. "It got wide enough where you could run a top or a bottom groove. Usually, this track gets a big berm right in the middle which makes it tough to move around, but when it’s done like this it’s a lot of fun to race.

"Sammy hasn’t been racing with us as much, but when he’s got a good car under him he’s as tough as anyone out there. This is about the time of year we usually start running good. We really enjoy coming out and running this Eastern swing. This gets us off to a good start, a lot better than we’ve had the last couple of weeks. I just want to thank Quaker State, Hoosier Tires, Delco-Remy, Maxim Chassis and everyone who helps keep us out here in the road. It’s gotten expensive to do this, but it’s because of people like them we’re able to come out here and run a pretty competitive car."

Kinser, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 55-car field, drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past four cars to win the Fourth Heat Race. "The King of the Outlaws" earned the privilege of starting the "A" Feature on the pole by winning the First Dash Race.

Swindell, who won the Second Dash Race, raced wheel-to-wheel with Kinser through turn four as the green flag fell in the 16th main event of the year. The three-time World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion steered the #12X Beaver Drill & Tool Maxim around Kinser in the high groove in the second corner to take the lead.

Mark Kinser lost sixth place early in the second lap when the #5M Sabko Maxim spun in turn four. Dale Blaney, whose brother Dave won three World of Outlaws Sprint Series "A" Features at Lernerville Speedway, collided with Mark and flipped into Lance Dewease. Chad Kemenah spun in the second corner at the same time, costing him third place.

Swindell was approaching lapped traffic during the fifth lap when First Heat Race winner Ryan Coniam spun in turn two. Kemenah turned the #15K Underground Utilities Eagle completely around in front of Swindell four laps later, allowing Kinser to close to cut Sammy’s advantage to six car-lengths.

Mechanical problems in the #15 Parker Stores J&J caused fast qualifier Donny Schatz to lose six positions early in the race. Schatz, who won the World of Outlaws Sprint Series "A" Feature winner at Lernerville Speedway last May 21st, raced past Daryn Pittman and Jonathan Allard during laps 11 and 13, then passed Craig Dollansky and Joey Saldana following a 16th-lap caution to take over fifth place. Drive line problems forced the 1997 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year to stop on the front straightaway four laps later, however.

Kinser chased Swindell for 1 2/3 laps after the race resumed, and passed him for the lead with an inside move in turn three late in the 22nd lap. "The King of the Outlaws" was seven car-lengths ahead of Swindell when he entered lapped traffic three laps later.

Swindell was only five car-lengths behind in dense traffic early in lap 30, but Kinser’s daring slide job to pass rookie Brian Brown between the third and fourth corners gave him a 12-car-length advantage.

Craig Dollansky, who swept the feature races in last weekend’s Polydome Princeton National, passed Lasoski for fourth place as Kinser raced under the checkered flag.

Tim Shaffer, Lernerville Speedway’s track champion in 1993, finished in third place. Dollansky drove the #7 VMAC Maxim past seven cars to finish ahead of Lasoski, 20th-starting Ed Lynch, Jr., Second Heat Race winner Jason Meyers, Dewease, Pittman and Mark Kinser.

Meyers’ 13th top-10 finish of the season pushed him past Schatz into third place in the point standings. Shaffer moved into eighth place, passing Pittman.

Paul McMahan was battling Kemenah for the final transfer position in the Second Heat Race when the #11H Selma Shell Maxim hit the front-stretch retaining wall, flipped and tore down the catch fence. McMahan won the "B" Feature and finished 14th in the main event despite spinning late in lap 16.

Schatz paced the qualifying session for the second time in as many events, circling the semi-banked, ½-mile oval in 13.084 seconds, an average speed of 137.573 M.P.H. WoO
