ROSSBURG, OH (April 9) – Steve Kinser won Friday’s Preliminary Feature in much the same manner he has many of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ first 99 main events at Eldora Speedway.

“The King of the Outlaws” challenged Tyler Walker for several laps before taking the lead, then held off Danny Lasoski through the final 12 laps around “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile” for the victory.

“Danny and I were having our own little race there coming off turn four, and I guess we forgot about the rest of the guys back there,” Kinser said. “We set our car up for the end of the race. When they water this place right before the feature, it makes the bottom pretty good at the beginning until they throw it back up the racetrack. We were actually a little tight tonight, but we were good enough to get the job done.

”We’ve raced here for a lot of years (26-plus) – pretty much as long as I’ve been racing – and it would be great to win the 100th World of Outlaws race here. This team of mine has been doing a great job for the last couple of years, and it’s just been a pleasure being able to drive a car this good.”

Kinser and Lasoski won the Dash Races and started on the front row. They were battling each other for the lead when Walker – who started outside the second row – drove Guy Forbrook’s #5 Wirtgen/MPD Hand Controls Maxim around them in the high groove early in the opening lap.

Walker was a half-straightaway ahead of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic four laps later. “The King of the Outlaws” narrowed the gap to eight car-lengths in dense traffic during the 10th lap, and caught Walker two laps later.

Kinser, whose crew replaced the engine in his #11 Quaker State Maxim following the hot-lap sessions, raced wheel-to-wheel with the 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion through the third and fourth corners late in lap 13, but was unable to surge ahead. The World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ defending and 18-time champion won a back-straightaway drag race with Walker midway through the 14th lap, and opened a half-straightaway advantage within two laps.

Lasoski, the series’ 2001 champion, steered NASCAR Winston Cup titleist Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the low groove in turn four to pass Walker late in the 19th lap. Donny Schatz, who won Eldora’s Historical Big One two years ago, used a similar move to pass Walker the next time around. Fast qualifier Daryn Pittman raced into fourth place as Walker’s engine started losing power late in lap 21.

Joey Saldana, making his debut in Larry Woodward’s #2 Volcano Joe’s Coffee Maxim, took the inside line through turn four to pass Pittman late in the 22nd lap, then duplicated the move to pass Schatz for third place as they headed for the checkered flag.

Kinser claimed his third Preliminary Feature victory of the season with 10 car-lengths to spare. The $5,000 victory pushed him 73 points ahead of Schatz in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings. “The Dude” improved three positions to third place with Friday’s runner-up run.

Schatz finished in fourth place, ahead of Pittman, Mark Kinser, 16th-starting Jason Sides, Sammy Swindell, Chad Kemenah and Tyler Walker.

Mark Kinser, racing with the World of Outlaws Sprint Series for the first time in 2004, appeared to be in mid-season form. The three-time series qualified 10th quick in the 46-car field, then drove father Karl Kinser’s #5M SABKO Maxim into sixth place from inside the sixth row in the evening’s main event.

Craig Dollansky, who set Eldora’s single-lap record with a 141.654-M.P.H. lap on April 13, 2002, drove Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim past 11 cars to finish 11th. Jason Meyers, the winner of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature at Eldora Speedway last August 8th, drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim into 12th place from outside the 10th row. Steve Kinser’s son, Kraig, passed nine cars to finish 14th.

Pittman paced the qualifying session with a 136.685-M.P.H. lap around Earl Baltes’ high-banked, ½-mile oval. The series’ 2002 Manufacturers’ Hard Charger Award winner moved into fifth place in the point standings with his fifth-place run in the Preliminary Feature. WoO
