MECHANICSBURG, PA (October 4) – O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser passed Lance Dewease with 6 2/3 laps remaining at Williams Grove Speedway Saturday on his way to winning his record fourth Cleveland Brothers National Open championship.
Kinser, who started inside the second row, drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the low groove in the second corner to pass the defending National Open champion and took the checkered flag by six car-lengths to claim the $30,000 first prize.
“We got to squirting off the bottom in (turns) one and two – especially in turn two – and I knew if I drifted high he (Dewease) would try to get me back on the bottom in three and four, so I kind of drove down to the bottom on the back stretch,” Kinser said of the winning pass. “I was trying to breathe the motor some getting into the corners. We broke something last night, and with the air this good and as hard as you have to have your motor hitting, you want to at least be able to breathe it some.
“Racing at this place is as tough as it gets, and it feels good anytime you win here with the caliber of cars and the drivers that race here you’ve accomplished something. We’ve had a good car all year long, but we’ve struggled some on the big half-miles, so this is kind of a nice turn around. Danny (Lasoski) and I have gone back and forth all year long, but if we keep going out and winning races then things should fall our way.”
Lasoski fell 94 points behind “The King of the Outlaws” in their battle for the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ 25th Annual championship with a third-place finish. The victory, Kinser’s 24th of the season, was also the 24th of his career at Williams Grove Speedway.
Preliminary Feature winner Donny Schatz won his 12th Dash Race of the season for the privilege of starting the 40-lap main event on the pole. He drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J into the lead as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature, only to have Sammy Swindell spin into Joey Saldana in turn four several seconds later. Schatz burst into the lead again when the green flag replaced the yellow.
The leaders were approaching lapped traffic late in the 10th lap when Keith Kauffman lost second place when he spun in turn four. Dewease inherited the runner-up spot and passed Schatz for the runner-up spot with an inside move in the fourth corner two laps later.
Lasoski raced wheel-to-wheel with Kinser as they battled for third place early in lap 14, but was unable to surge ahead.
Jason Meyers and Brooke Weibley collided with Jac Haudenshild, Jason Sides, Swindell, Jonathan Allard and Johnny Herrera in the second corner and flipped early in the 21st lap, bringing out the red flag.
Kinser was on the move when the race resumed, passing Schatz for second place deep in turn two, then racing side-by-side with Dewease in the same spot the next time around.
“The Dude” was challenging Schatz for third place early in the 29th lap when Haudenschild stopped in the second corner with mechanical problems. Lasoski drove NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the inside line in turn four to pass Schatz for third place within a lap after the race resumed.
Kinser raced into the lead early in lap 33, just seconds before Greg Hodnett passed Mark Kinser for fifth place with a high move between the first and second corners.
Paul McMahan and Sides collided and flipped in turn three the next time around, bringing out the red flag and taking the leaders out of lapped traffic.
Mark Kinser regained fifth place with a high move around Hodnett in the second corner as the green flag replaced the red.
“The King of the Outlaws” controlled the final restart and coasted to the 495th victory of his incomparable career. Dewease finished in second place, ahead of Lasoski, Schatz, Mark Kinser, Hodnett, Daryn Pittman, 17th-starting Doug Esh, Tim Shaffer and 19th-starting Brian Paulus.
Joey Saldana drove his family’s #17 Eagle Raceway Maxim past 10 cars to finish 13th.
All four Heat Races, the “C” Feature, the Dash Race and the “B” Feature were caution-free. Kraig Kinser set Williams Grove Speedway’s eight-lap record with a 2:13.85 time in the First Heat Race.
Lasoski paced the qualifying session for the second program, circling the legendary semi-banked, ½-mile oval in 16.450 seconds, an average speed of 109.422-M.P.H. WoO
