Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) once again welcomed a stellar field of drivers and thrones of fans to the track for some great Saturday night dirt-track racing. Once again the track somehow managed to avoid all the moisture in the area and was able to complete week number five of the 20-week championship season. Triple digit car counts have once again become the norm at CMS and Saturday night was no exception as there were 100 cars signed in for competition. Among the cars present were 40 of the best Modified racers in the Midwest. The ULMA Late Models completed night two of the their Duel Showdown with 15 cars on hand, the Street Stocks were 21 strong and 24 B-modifieds also raced their way into their feature event. The following is a synopsis of Saturday night’s action, for complete results and point standings be sure to visit the CMS Website at www.centralmissourispeedway.net.

Whenever there’s big money on the line for a win in the ‘Mighty’ Modified feature event, the fans in the stands are always treated to the absolute best field of drivers competing in the greater Kansas City area. There were 40 cars on hand for the big $2,000-to-win 40-lap feature and it took no less than five 10-lap heat races and a 15-lap b-main event to sort out the starting lineup for the main event. Early race action saw James McMillin take heat one over Dustin Boney and Dave McVey. Dave Meyer grabbed heat two over Jimmy Dowell and James Cameron. Terry Schultz of Sedalia flew the checkers in heat three over Chad Lyle and Charles Laizure. Basehor, Kansas driver and last week’s feature winner Tim Karrick won heat four over Jim Moody and Tom Charles while Jason ‘Bodee’ Bodenhamer returned to the modified ranks and grabbed the checkers in heat five over Jim Roach and Dennis Walrath. The b-main event lineup could have passed for any a-main feature event on a normal week of racing as 20 drivers tried to battle for only 4 remaining transfer spots to the big show. Chillicothe driver Lee Hibner was flat out hooked up on the high side and went on to win over Kyle Westerhold, Justin Boney and Buddy Benedict. Mother Nature looked to be bearing down on the track a time or two during the night but once again had mercy on CMS as the star-studded field took the green flag on a quest to bank the $2,000 first-place check. Local drivers James McMillin of Warrensburg and Concordia’s ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer led the field into turn one with Meyer grabbing the early lead on the high side. Battles for about every position ensued throughout the field as Meyer led McMillin, Karrick, Dustin Boney and Terry Schultz early on until the first caution flag for a spin in turn one by Dennis Walrath. Karrick began showing his power and set sail for the lead while trying win his second feature race in a row on lap 8 as he made the move on the high side around Meyer and McMillin. Various problems forced an early retirement for Jimmy Dowell, Richard Layne, Justin Boney, Danny Charles and Charles Laizure. With the racing surface starting to slick over, Karrick stayed up high with Meyer down on the low side for the lead. A little further back Terry Schultz got a little sideways out of turn three as Dustin Boney and Chad Lyle had nowhere to go coming off of turn four behind Schultz and got tangled in the infield as both were forced to retire from the race. Karrick seemed to be on a rail by midway through the race and began pulling away from the field. A rare mistake by Bodenhamer sent him spinning down the front stretch after he clipped the big white tire coming off of turn four after which he was unable to finish the race, he was shown as 14th in the final rundown. In what looked to be the Tim Karrick show for the finish, things started to change by lap 36 as Meyer began closing in utilizing the low lane. Karrick’s car seemed to develop a push off the turns with only a few laps remaining and Meyer was on the prowl. On the white flag lap heading into corner number three, Karrick’s car hopped the cushion and with Meyer now right on his bumper, it was Meyer who darted down low off of four to grab an exciting win with the fans in the stands on their feat for the finish of the race. Karrick held on for second with McMillin, Jim Moody, Kyle Westerhold, Aaron Marrant, Tom Charles and Joe Walker rounding out the top eight.

The ULMA Late Models looked good early on in their heat race action as David Angell picked up his first-ever late model win in heat one over Jon Binning and Jeremy Watts while Cameron, Missouri driver Jason Estes took heat two over Bob King and James Rutledge. After completing night one of the ULMA Duel Showdown the night before at Valley Speedway the 13 drivers who entered the duel headed into the feature race in a tight battle trying to grab the extra cash put up by the United Late Model Association. After a caution-free, fast and furious feature the week before, this feature event was anything but fast as several caution periods forced the feature race to end under the time limit and a green, white, checkered flag finish. James Rutledge of California, Missouri had a slim two-point advantage over Kevin Coyne in the duel showdown points heading into the feature event and despite not finishing the race, his ninth place run was just enough to win the duel showdown portion over Coyne, who unfortunately lost a motor late in the race. Meanwhile in the feature race, Jason Estes and Bob King had a great battle up front with King consistently pressuring Estes around every turn. A turn four crash collected several strong competitors near the midway point of the event with Brett Rollert, Jamie Wineland, Jon Binning, and Steven Clancy all forced to the pits after the incident. David Angel, Jeremy Watts, Steve McDowell and Danny Lorton all settled into the top six near the end of the race and finished with top six runs by using patience and smart driving to FINISH the race. On a late-race restart, Bob King was able to make the final move around Estes who drifted to high off of corner four and was able to grab his first feature win of the year with Estes, Angel, Watts, McDowell and Lorton in tow.

The always exciting street stocks showed the fans that side-by-side racing can be done throughout the field right to the finish of the race without extensive caution flag periods in an exciting race to the finish. Two of the strongest street stock competitors in the business led the field to the green early on after the heat race finishes determined the lineup for the feature race. Heat winners were Marc Carter over Jeff Lazenby and Tammy Korff while veteran Herb Dannar took heat two over Nathan Himes and Richard Brainard. Brian Johnson flew the checkers in heat three of Ted Welschmeyer and Jake Conley. Carter and Dannar led the 19-car starting field to the green flag with Johnson and Lazenby just behind. From the get go it was clear that this race would go down to the wire with Johnson and Carter as the two put on a fantastic race for the fans at the front of the field. Dannar held his own in his strongest showing this year in third ahead of Lazenby and Welschmeyer. With five laps to go, three-time feature winner Johnson put heavy pressure on Mark ‘the Shark’ Carter for the lead but Carter fended him off lap after lap to take his first feature win of the year. Johnson, Dannar, Lazenby, Welschmeyer and Ray Smith completed the top six.

The B-modifieds have provided some fantastic racing for the fans this year with a consistent car count every week. It once again took three heat races to determine the 24-car starting lineup for the main event. Michael Mullins was victorious in heat one ahead of Johnny Ebert and Phillip Bradshaw. Brian Ziegler picked up the win in heat two over Jake Newman and Mark Evinger. The third heat had Scotty Martin picking up the win over Bubba Kline and Jeremiah Stephens. During the 15-lap main event, two and three-wide racing was the norm all throughout the field. Brian Ziegler of Bates City got out to an early lead and began pulling away from the field until the field had to be realigned after an early caution. Jake Newman of Parkville has been one of the strongest b-mod drivers in the past few weeks and this week he was once again battling near the front. Three-time 2007 feature winner Scotty Martin began putting pressure on the leaders as Michael Mullins, Evinger and Max Grogan had a fantastic battle going on for fifth near the end of the race. Martin finally made the pass for the lead after Ziegler got to high coming off of the turn four area. Scotty Martin, the hottest driver so far this year at the ‘Burg, went on to his fourth feature win of the young season. Ziegler held on for his best finish of the year in second and was followed to the line by Newman, 16-year old Ethan Isaacs, Evinger and Mullins rounding out the top six.
