He can’t be called a “Rookie” anymore. Josh “Kid Rocket” Richards of Shinnston,WV put himself into the YJ Stinger® Victory Lane Monday at Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon,NY pocketing the World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series sanctioned $10,000 to win “CarQuest Auto Parts/Team Goewey Dodge 50”. Starting from the outside front row the 17 year-old driver fell behind Scott Bloomquist and Rick Eckert at the end of the first lap. Then things took a wild turn on lap 19 as Bloomquist exploded a transmission and Eckert busted an oil line fitting coming down the front straightaway setting off a tornado a spinning cars. Richards was able to miss the transmission fluid and oil handing him the lead. Richards then held off Tim McCreadie by .421 seconds to secure his first ever main event victory. Twelfth starting Scott Haus rode home third with Clint Smith fourth and Chub Frank fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Dale McDowell in sixth followed by 20th starting Shane Clanton, Billy Moyer, 22nd starting Dan Stone and Steve Francis. Francis was running third at lap 37 when a fuel line came undone forcing him to roll to a stop. Quick repairs got Francis back into the battle where he rebounded to a top 10 finish but now finds himself 8 points behind championship point leader Billy Moyer heading into Tuesday’s $15,000 to win event at Rolling Wheels Raceway.
Richards was virtually speechless on what he had accomplished driving the Seubert Calf Ranches/A-C-E Metal Works/MCB Motorsports No. 1 Mark Richards Racing Enterprises,Inc. Rocket Chassis/Cornett Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo. “I’m confused right now. I don’t know what to think,” said the stunned Richards. “It’s awesome. I can’t describe what it feels like to come across the finish line first. I just have to thank my dad and my mom and the whole family, the crew guys Joe and Jarrod and all of our sponsors. There is no way I could be where I’m at right now without all of them.”
When asked if he was worried about something happening to him after seeing Bloomquist and Eckert drop out Richards said, “I thought I was gonna have a heart attack the last few laps and when those cautions came out. I just kept telling myself it’s just like a heat race to keep myself calmed down. To do what we did tonight, it’s pretty cool.”
McCreadie, who pilots the Sweetners Plus/A&C Speedworld No. 39 Ann and Carl Myers Rocket Chassis/C&C Performance Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo, had nothing but praise for Richards. “He ran a great race and didn’t make any mistakes. He’s a good kid. He drives hard.” When asked if he thought he might have had a shot at Richards, “T-Mac” related “I needed about five or six laps of racing put together to gain on him. We just had those cautions fall which hurt us. But, the other night at Lincoln they fell right for us. Anytime I needed a yellow the fell right for me. Tonight the same thing happened for Josh. When he needed them, he got ‘em. But their good people that do a good job and it’s nice to see Josh finally get that first win.”
Third place finisher Haus, driving the CKC Trucking No. 33 Lynn Gaw Rocket Chassis/Miller Racing Engines Pontiac Grand Prix, was extremely happy with his performance. “I’m as happy as lark right now,” said the veteran campaigner. “We got ninth at Lincoln Saturday night, the first time we’ve ran there in 20 years. Lynn Gaw who owns this car wanted to come up here. We qualified twelfth which wasn’t great but it wasn’t too bad either. We had American Racer tires on tonight which really seemed to be suited for this track surface. We worked ourself into third with some help from the attrition but the car was really pretty good.”
McDowell and Richards brought the field down for the start but it was third starting Bloomquist who powered into the lead entering turn one on the massive 5/8ths mile speedway. Richards settled into second at the end of the first lap followed by Eckert, McDowell and McCreadie. Before lap 2 could be completed the yellow was flying when Billy Decker spun in turn one. On the restart, McDowell fell to sixth as McCreadie and Francis all powered by while Eckert grabbed second from Richards. Another caution on lap 6 for debris in turn two slowed the action.
The restart order at this point had Bloomquist in front trailed by Eckert, Richards, McCreadie and Francis then Smith, Haus, Moyer, McDowell and Darrell Lanigan. Impending trouble loomed ahead for Eckert as his car started to show some smoke by lap 10 as Bloomquist held a six car margin on Eckert. Bloomquist entered lapped traffic at lap 14 allowing Eckert to close to within three car lengths of the leader. Lanigan moved past McDowell at lap 15 to take the ninth spot. Caution waved again at lap 17 when Richards tried to lap Tony Lombardi resulting in contact which sent Lombardi spinning in turn three.
Two laps after going back to green the race took a wild turn. Powering down the long front straightaway Bloomquist’s car suddenly exploded the transmission and at the same time Eckert’s car broke an oil line fitting. With fluid all over the race track the cars of Decker, Eric Jacobsen, Brett Hearn, Jeremy Miller and Lombardi went spinning and crashing into turn one. All drivers were uninjured with all but Lombardi unable to continue.
Richards was now the leader with McCreadie second, Francis third, Smith fourth and Haus fifth trailed by Lanigan, Frank, McDowell, Moyer and Clanton. At the halfway mark the top ten remained virtually the same but Haus was now fourth and Clanton ninth. Richards began to run into lapped traffic at lap 35 but the caution waved when Lanigan suddenly slowed with a blown engine moving McDowell, Clanton and Moyer up a spot and Stone into the top ten.
McCreadie was able to get the nose of his car underneath of Richards in turn three after the race went back to green but the youngster held off McCreadie’s charge to retain the lead. Francis gained on McCreadie during lap 36 but the next lap Francis suddenly slowed when a fuel line fitting came undone. Francis headed pitside for quick repairs returning the race before the green flag flew.
Just like the restart at lap 35, McCreadie again got underneath of Richards entering turn three but could not make the pass for the lead. With 10 circuits to go Richards held a two car advantage on McCreadie with Haus now third, Smith fourth and Frank fifth trailed by McDowell, Clanton, Moyer, Stone and John Blankenship. Eckert returned to the race at lap 42 but two laps later his car went up in a huge plume of oil smoke as the oil line fitting exploded dropping oil in turns one and two.
McCreadie again was able to get underneath of Richards on the restart and like twice before the young driver held off the advances. Francis cracked back into the top ten at lap 46 shuffling past Blankenship. Richards powered his car hard the final four laps taking the checkered flag with his left arm out the window for his first career feature win.
The $45,000 purse event drew 24 cars to the high-banked 5/8ths mile speedway which does not run dirt Late Models. Actually there are no dirt Late Models in the Lebanon Valley Speedway region. Eckert topped time trials with a fast lap of 19.590 seconds at an average speed of 114.855mph. Eckert also grabbed a heat race win with McCreadie and Richards winning the other heat races while McDowell copped the dash race.

NOTES: A stout field of 24 cars were on hand for the $10,000 event despite the fact that there are actually no dirt Late Models in eastern New York state or the New England region. DIRT Big Block Modified drivers who competed were Billy Decker of Unadilla,NY, Tim Fuller of Watertown,NY and multi-time DIRT Big Block Modified champion Brett Hearn of Sussex,NJ. Decker and Fuller have experience driving the dirt Late Models. Hearn adapted quite well to the lighter and quicker dirt Late Models.
Lebanon Valley Speedway is a very big 5/8ths mile speedway featuring extremely long straightaways with tight high-banked turns. One unique piece about the “Valley of Speed” is that only $1.00 bills are accepted at the concessions stands. However, the track does have it’s own “bank” where large bills can be exchanged for the $1.00 bills. And, when you place an order for large french fries you don’t receive them in a standard basket. You’ll receive them in a cardboard-like dog dish!
A very large crowd was on hand for the very first ever appearance of the WoO Stacker 2® Late Model Series in the basically New England region. Lebanon Valley Speedway is a tad over 2 hours west of Boston,MA and is situated just off of I-90 and U.S. Route 20. A quick license plate scan of the parking areas revealed fans had come from Massachuesetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, of course New York, and from Canada.
Dash: Bloomquist and McDowell raced side by side into turn one at the drop of the green flag with McDowell using the high groove to snare the lead and go on to the victory. Richards blasted from fifth to third at the end of the first lap then ran down Bloomquist taking second on lap 3. Eckert made a late race charge pulling alongside of Bloomquist exiting turn four on the final lap but couldn’t overtake Bloomquist for the third spot.
Heat # 3: Richards and Bloomquist raced side by side into turn one at the drop of the green flag with Bloomquist getting a slight advantage until his car slipped a bit allowing Richards to take the lead which he would hold to the finish. Hubbard lost the handle in turn two on lap 5 spinning to a stop and bringing out the only caution of the three heat races.
Heat # 2: McCreadie exploded into the lead at the drop of the green flag opening up a nice lead. In a battle for second, Moyer and Miller raced side by side for three laps until Moyer was able to duck underneath in turn one for the spot. Hearn and Clanton raced hard from laps 5 – 9 until Hearn was able to get underneath of Clanton in turn two to grab the sixth spot.
Heat # 1: Eckert jumped out front at thed rop of the gren flag and never looked back. Smith and Francis had a great dual going for third from laps 3 – 6 until “Cat Daddy” got the position coming down the frontchute. On the opening lap, Stone drifted high in turn one grazing the wall but continued on.

Richards was now the leader with McCreadie second, Francis third, Smith fourth and Haus fifth trailed by Lanigan, Frank, McDowell, Moyer and Clanton. At the halfway mark the top ten remained virtually the same but Haus was now fourth and Clanton ninth. Richards began to run into lapped traffic at lap 35 but the caution waved when Lanigan suddenly slowed with a blown engine moving McDowell, Clanton and Moyer up a spot and Stone into the top ten.
McCreadie was able to get the nose of his car underneath of Richards in turn three after the race went back to green but the youngster held off McCreadie’s charge to retain the lead. Francis gained on McCreadie during lap 36 but the next lap Francis suddenly slowed when a fuel line fitting came undone. Francis headed pitside for quick repairs returning the race before the green flag flew.
Just like the restart at lap 35, McCreadie again got underneath of Richards entering turn three but could not make the pass for the lead. With 10 circuits to go Richards held a two car advantage on McCreadie with Haus now third, Smith fourth and Frank fifth trailed by McDowell, Clanton, Moyer, Stone and John Blankenship. Eckert returned to the race at lap 42 but two laps later his car went up in a huge plume of oil smoke as the oil line fitting exploded dropping oil in turns one and two.
McCreadie again was able to get underneath of Richards on the restart and like twice before the young driver held off the advances. Francis cracked back into the top ten at lap 46 shuffling past Blankenship. Richards powered his car hard the final four laps taking the checkered flag with his left arm out the window for his first career feature win.
The $45,000 purse event drew 24 cars to the high-banked 5/8ths mile speedway which does not run dirt Late Models. Actually there are no dirt Late Models in the Lebanon Valley Speedway region. Eckert topped time trials with a fast lap of 19.590 seconds at an average speed of 114.855mph. Eckert also grabbed a heat race win with McCreadie and Richards winning the other heat races while McDowell copped the dash race.

NOTES: A stout field of 24 cars were on hand for the $10,000 event despite the fact that there are actually no dirt Late Models in eastern New York state or the New England region. DIRT Big Block Modified drivers who competed were Billy Decker of Unadilla,NY, Tim Fuller of Watertown,NY and multi-time DIRT Big Block Modified champion Brett Hearn of Sussex,NJ. Decker and Fuller have experience driving the dirt Late Models. Hearn adapted quite well to the lighter and quicker dirt Late Models.
Lebanon Valley Speedway is a very big 5/8ths mile speedway featuring extremely long straightaways with tight high-banked turns. One unique piece about the “Valley of Speed” is that only $1.00 bills are accepted at the concessions stands. However, the track does have it’s own “bank” where large bills can be exchanged for the $1.00 bills. And, when you place an order for large french fries you don’t receive them in a standard basket. You’ll receive them in a cardboard-like dog dish!
A very large crowd was on hand for the very first ever appearance of the WoO Stacker 2® Late Model Series in the basically New England region. Lebanon Valley Speedway is a tad over 2 hours west of Boston,MA and is situated just off of I-90 and U.S. Route 20. A quick license plate scan of the parking areas revealed fans had come from Massachuesetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, of course New York, and from Canada.
Dash: Bloomquist and McDowell raced side by side into turn one at the drop of the green flag with McDowell using the high groove to snare the lead and go on to the victory. Richards blasted from fifth to third at the end of the first lap then ran down Bloomquist taking second on lap 3. Eckert made a late race charge pulling alongside of Bloomquist exiting turn four on the final lap but couldn’t overtake Bloomquist for the third spot.
Heat # 3: Richards and Bloomquist raced side by side into turn one at the drop of the green flag with Bloomquist getting a slight advantage until his car slipped a bit allowing Richards to take the lead which he would hold to the finish. Hubbard lost the handle in turn two on lap 5 spinning to a stop and bringing out the only caution of the three heat races.
Heat # 2: McCreadie exploded into the lead at the drop of the green flag opening up a nice lead. In a battle for second, Moyer and Miller raced side by side for three laps until Moyer was able to duck underneath in turn one for the spot. Hearn and Clanton raced hard from laps 5 – 9 until Hearn was able to get underneath of Clanton in turn two to grab the sixth spot.
Heat # 1: Eckert jumped out front at thed rop of the gren flag and never looked back. Smith and Francis had a great dual going for third from laps 3 – 6 until “Cat Daddy” got the position coming down the frontchute. On the opening lap, Stone drifted high in turn one grazing the wall but continued on.
