The Governor’s Cup Championships This Weekend!

COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI-The season opener at the Magnolia Motor Speedway is set for this weekend featuring the 2nd Annual Cellular South Governor’s Cup presented by Coca Cola. The big event will feature a 60-lap Super Late Model main event paying $10,000 to win plus local division Governor’s Cup Championships highlighted by a $1,500 to win Open Wheel Modified Championship. Rodney Wing of Meridian, Mississippi is the inaugural and reigning Governor’s Cup Champion.

Many changes have taken place at the Magnolia Motor Speedway in its short tenure, but the most notable positive change has been the change of leadership at the speedway with Chuck Cook and the Imes brothers now heading the direction along with the alliance with Johnny Stokes and the Columbus Speedway event team. Both groups have quickly meshed together into an excellent cohesive team as positive momentum is in place at arguably one of the finer short track racing facilities in the south. The 2005 season offers optimism and excitement for the region’s fans and drivers as the focus now moves to where it belongs…to the action on the track.

As the Governor’s Cup Championship event is at upon us, drivers and fans will once again be guessing as to what kind of track conditions will be in play at the pristine 3/8’s mile semi banked Magnolia Motor Speedway gumbo surfaced oval. It is no secret that with track prep man extraordinaire Johnny Stokes at the helm, the only thing that can be expected, is the unexpected. Whether the gumbo surface will be hooked up with maximum traction and rocket fast or will the drivers be faced with navigating on a slick and treacherous black ice surface…it is simply anybody’s guess. History has shown that Stokes constantly likes to keep changing track surface characteristics and prep methods in order to provide the best possible racing for the fans while keeping the drivers at the top of their game. The drama will all unfold this weekend as Stokes and company’s brand of Magnolia Motor Mayhem will be unleashed. It is show time on the prairie.

Action gets underway Thursday night with an open practice from 7pm until 10pm. Then the drivers will take the green flag in anger on Friday Night for Governor’s Cup Pole night featuring Super Late Model Pole Qualifying and plus qualifying races in Super Late Models and all local divisions. The weekend will culminate on Saturday night with B-Main events and championship features with the 60-lap $10,000 to win Super Late Model main event. A stellar field of the region’s top drivers is expected to be on hand in all divisions competing for Governor’s Cup top honors.

Fans should note that coolers and lawn chairs are welcome. Reserved trackside parking spaces still remain as well. Plus family friendly pricing will be in effect with children ages 10 and under admitted free; while student ages 11 to 18 and military personnel are admitted for only $10 each on Friday and Saturday night.

The next race in Columbus, MS following the Governor's Cup will be a Friday night "special edition" Rebel Challenge Weekly Racing Series event with all divisions in action on April 29th at Columbus Speedway, "The Baddest Bullring in the South".
