CARTERSVILLE, GA – The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series is ready for the grand finale of the 2009 this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights with the $10,000-to-win 100-lap 5th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL. Over 70 entries are expected from throughout the country.

It is also Championship week for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, as the Annual Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday night at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tampa, FL. Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS, at 18-years-old, will be honored as the youngest dirt late model national champion in the history of the sport.

Also being honored at the awards banquet will be the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Rookie of the Year Ben McCreary of Baldwyn, MS, the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Regional Champions Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS in the West Region, Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL in the East Region and Rick Stout of Stanton, MI in the Northern Challenge Series.

The Top 10 drivers in the National Tour point standings, along with the Top 3 drivers in each Weekly Racing Series Region will also be honored. After the trophies and point fund checks have been handed out on Wednesday night, it will be time to head to “The Clay By The Bay” for some racing action.

The NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race has always drawn many of the top names in dirt late model racing, as Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN is a two-time winner in 2005 and 2007, and Randy Korte of Highland, IL took the win in 2006. Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN is the defending champion.

Other top drivers that have made appearances at the NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race include Tim McCreadie, Dennis Erb Jr., and Doug Horton.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series drivers will be well-represented at the NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race. Along with 2009 National Champion Cooley and Rookie of the Year McCreary, look for two-time National Champion David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN, and two-time National Championship Runner-Up Larry Boutwell of Baker, FL.

Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA finished third in the 2009 points, and Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA finished fourth in the National points with two wins. Also expected is the all-time career winner with the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series dirt late models are powered by the economical GM Performance aluminum-head 400 horsepower 604 and steel-head 350 horsepower 602 engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications.

East Bay Raceway Park will be hosting a practice on Thursday night, and the competition begins on Friday night with Group Qualifying and Heat Race to set the first 18 starting spots for Saturday night’s 100-lap big show. The remaining spots for the $10,000-to-win main event will be set in B-Main races on Saturday night, followed by the 5th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race.

Competitors are reminded that mufflers are required for this event. Competitors may use any external muffler, like the Schoenfeld 112535. No insert mufflers and no hulled out mufflers are permitted.
