2004 Driver's Seat Award Winners Announced

Award Winners:

"Glenn Miller Memorial Award" - Laura Jones and Bobby Prince

Driver of the Year - Rusty Griffaw

Rookie of the Year - Jeremy Sutton

Promoter of the Year - Mel Kinnaird (Montgomery County)

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Glenn Miller Memorial Award, it was an award that goes to the person (or persons) for devotion and love of the sport. It's our humanitarian award and it is dedicated to modified driver Glenn Miller who recently past away. Glenn was paralyzed from the waist down from a racing accident at St. Francois County 18 years ago, but his shear love of the sport kept him coming back and driving a special designed modified. He was one of the real good guys of our sport and we will miss him badly. The overwhelming response I received from the people here on STLRACING.COM both via PMs, email and directly on here for Laura and Bobby spoke volumes. Congratulations to them both for all their hard work and dedication.

The Rookie of the Year, Jeremy Sutton, may not be familiar to some of you. Jeremy drives a stock buggy at Big River Sand Drags. In a highly competitive class, he not only faired well, he won the class and earned a shot at competing for the overall track championship. Since the awards started in 1997, he is only the second person from Big River to ever earn one of the Driver's Seat awards.

As far as the Driver of the Year award goes I had several outstanding candidates to choose from making this one of the hardest decisions in the history of this award. Billy Smith of Park Hills and Doug Savage of Farmington are just two of the people who received a lot of recognition and praise from those of you who responded. However Rusty also had one of those exceptional years including winning the UMP Missouri State Championship (finished 4th in the nation) and winning the track championship at the Montgomery County Speedway. He also received numerous nominations from the people on STLRACING.COM.

The Promoter of the Year award was easy this year. How many promoters do you know will go and take parts off his tow truck to help out one of his drivers? Well, Mel Kinnaird did and that was that kind of dedication that earned him this year's award. Mel is ALWAYS there working and watching what is going on the track usually from his perch there in turn four. If there is ever a problem he is there to react.

I just wanted to personally thank all of you who took the time to spend me your nominations and express your opinions. Without you these awards would not be possible. So to our winners I say "congratulations" and once again to all of you I say "thanks" for a fantastic 2004 racing season. Let's make 2005 even better....

P.S. We will be getting in contact with these people through either John "Trashdog" Barr or myself and we will set up a time and date to give them their awards. As of the time of this being listed, none of them know....

Congratulations Rusty!!!!! What an outstanding season you had. So many of us were SOOOOOO proud of you this past season. We might not have been at the track each week to support you, but you know we were there in spirit. There wasn't a night that went by that we knew you were racing that we didn't call you (or someone) to find out how you did. We were pulling for you.
With the 2004 season being such a memorable one and so outstanding, how are you gonna top it? Well, I (along with ALL your fans) know you'll sure try. Good luck in 2005!!! Go after that championship!!!

Congrats to Laura and Bobby, you guys did a great job this year. I am glad we have people like you in our racing community.

Congrats to Rusty, what a great year!

Congrats to all of the WINNERS !!!!!

Especially my sister " YOU ALWAYS MAKE ME PROUD " with what you do at the track and for the kids. You all should be pleased :)

Congratulations to all who received awards. I'd especially like to congratulate Laura & Bobby on receiving the Glenn Miller Memorial Award. I can't think of two more deserving people of that award. I personally had the opportunity to work with both of them this summer on a project where I was raising money for a cancer victim & her family, and Laura was the first to call me to help out and Bobby was the second to contact me. They both love the sport and are truly concerned about everyone who are a part of our racing community. Thank you to both of you for all that you do for all of us! :)

Congrat to Rusty and LaLa! Both are great people and are worthy of the awards! This is pretty IMPRESIVE they get these awards!

Laura and Bobby really went above and beyond this year with several things they did! Their contributions to Jacob and his family was a testament to what these people are about. Nothing short of a Noble Peace Prize effort! WTG!
