When the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season began in February an ambitious schedule featuring high dollar purses at several of the nation’s finest dirt track racing facility’s beckoned for the race teams. It would be a grueling schedule lasting until the final week-end in October. It was a schedule to test the mettle of any driver, crew member and car owner.

Starting February 17th at Volusia Speedway Park in Daytona Beach (Barberville),FL and ending October 29th at the same venue, no one could have written a script any better for the dramatic conclusion of the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season. Plying their trade at thirty-four different race tracks in twenty-one states it seemed impossible, for not only the race teams, that the Championship would come down to the thirty-ninth and final event of the season.

But, that’s exactly what transpired as Billy Moyer of Batesville,AR claimed the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship by a tie-breaker. Win the final event and the title would be Moyer’s. Finish behind Steve Francis of Ashland,KY and Moyer would finish second. Finish one spot better than Francis and both drivers would finish the season in a tie for the Championship points lead. Moyer made a last lap pass of Francis to finish second forcing a tie in Championship points and the use of the tie-breaker.

The first tie-breaker, most wins on the season, still had Moyer and Francis tied with five victories during the season. The second tie-breaker, most second place finishes on the season, gave Moyer the Championship by a five to two tally and the $120,000 Champions check from a dirt Late Model racing record setting $540,000 point fund.

The 2005 season was a very competitive season with fourteen different drivers finding themselves in a World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory Lane. Tim McCreadie of Watertown,NY, the 2004 World of Outlaws Late Model Series “Rookie of the Year” led the winners list with eight victory’s on the season.

Twenty drivers earned time trial honors during the 2005 season with Rick Eckert of York,PA leading that category with six fast times. A total of one hundred-fifty seven heat races win were contested seeing forty drivers earn heat race checkers led by both Eckert and McCreadie with seventeen wins each.

Seventy-six “B” Main races were held with a whopping fifty-four drivers picking up checkered flags led by Darrell Lanigan of Union,KY; Dan Schlieper of Sullivan,WI; Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg,TN and Mike Balzano of Parkersburg,WV all with three.

Fourteen drivers earned a feature pole starting position by winning the dash race led by Moyer’s six wins.

A total of 2,028 feature laps were completed during the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season with twenty-one drivers leading at least one feature lap. McCreadie topped the feature lap leaders list with three hundred-twenty five.

Over the course of the thirty-nine event season, one thousand-four hundred-thirty five drivers entered a 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series event. Five hundred-twenty drivers entered at least one event. The average car count per event was thirty-seven.

Total purse money paid during the 2005 season was $4,772,348.00.
