When the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season blossomed to life in February at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, several questions were yet to be answered.Who would be chasing the Championship? Who were contenders and who were pretenders for that Championship? And, who would win that Championship? With a daunting schedule that wouldn’t wrap up until late October there would be plenty of intense on-track action and plenty of off-track “bench racing” to answers those questions. In reality, no one could have predicted what would transpire over the next nine months.

Defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg,TN was back to defend his 2004 crown when the Series unveiled their sophomore season February 17th at the venerable half-mile speedpant located just west of Daytona Beach,FL. Bloomquist’s chances of defending his title would be tested greatly as arguably one of the strongest contingents of dirt Late Model driving talent in the country was assembled for the 2005 season.

Veteran drivers such as Billy Moyer, Steve Francis, Rick Eckert, Chub Frank, Dale McDowell, Darrell Lanigan, Clint Smith and Dan Schlieper; young guns Shane Clanton, John Blankenship and 2004 WoO Late Model Series “Rookie of the Year” Tim McCreadie along with high-school driver Josh Richards were all after Bloomquist’s crown. Add the toughest competition from around the nation to the mix and the two nights of racing to start the season at V.S.P. proved to be only a glimpse of what was in store.

A very strong field entered the season opener, a 50 lap feature affair paying $10,000 to win. Thanks to a new power plant that was installed the day of the event, Billy Moyer of Batesville,AR delivered a warning shot to every driver in the Series by starting on the pole and driving a near-flawless race to capture the checkered flag aboard the J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning/Petroff Towing No. 21 Billy Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Don O’Neal, Scott James, Rick Eckert and Darrell Lanigan, who started 23rd in the 24-car main event, followed Moyer to the finish.

“I’m glad to get this first one under our belts with the World of Outlaws,” Moyer said. “We followed the deal last year and didn’t meet our expectations. To get the first one right off the bat definitely feels good. The difference tonight is that I started on the front instead of two or three rows back. The motor got me there because of qualifying. The motor in the heat race was strong as compared to the other one we had in there. I was struggling in the heats and didn’t really know it.”

Two nights later the stage was set again at Volusia Speedway Park. Another 50 lap main event and another $10,000 up for grabs. Showing that a sophomore slump was not in his vocabulary, Watertown,NY native Tim McCreadie was virtually unbeatable throughout the final night of Volusia’s Speed Weeks. He posted the fifth-fastest time out of 50 cars, won his heat and won the dash to start the $10,000-to-win main event on the pole.

After Billy Moyer, winner of the Outlaws season-opening event Thursday night, grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag, McCreadie surged to the front on Lap 2 and led the rest of the way in the 50-lap feature driving the Sweeteners Plus/A & C Speedworld/Texaco-Havoline No. 39 Ann and Carl Myers Rocket Chassis/C.C. Performance Pontiac Grand Prix. The racing behind McCreadie was furious. Off a Delaware restart with 14 laps down, Darrell Lanigan plowed his way from fifth to third and used another restart to surge past Scott James for his second consecutive top-five finish this season with the Outlaws. Finishing behind James were Don O’Neal, Clint Smith, Moyer and Chub Frank.

“You just try not to make any mistakes because the last thing you want to do is start over-driving the car and end up dropping back after we were lucky enough to get up front all night,” said McCreadie, who split time between late models and big block modifieds in 2004. “For my car owners, they had hardly seen me run in one of these. When I won one of the races here last year they weren’t at it so it’s nice to get a win for Ann and Carl Myers.”

With the two season openers in the books Billy Moyer sat tied with two other drivers atop the Championship points list. And, only 30 points separated the top eleven drivers in the standings! It was only a glimpse of things to come.

After six weeks of regrouping and preparing for the meat of the 2005 season the race teams rolled into Allegany County Speedway in Cumberland,MD April 8th for a 50 lap chase around the huge one-half mile speedplant offering $10,000 to win. Steve Francis of Ashland,KY swept past race long leader Tim McCreadie on lap 18 powering away to his first victory of the season driving the MOPAR Performance Parts/Valvoline/Moring Disposal No. 15 Steve Francis Racing Rocket Chassis/Stanton Racing Engines Dodge Intrepid R/T. Darrell Lanigan just nipped Scott Bloomquist for second at the finish followed by Dale McDowell and Billy Moyer.

“You know this thing just kept getting better and better as the race went on,” said Francis. “We had to do some adjusting to the new Hoosier Tires but I’ll tell you what those things are just unreal. The car was really, really good all night. The driver had a bit of brain fade during time trials and we should’ve done better there.”

Making a first ever appearance to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway the next night, April 9th, would prove to be a night of firsts.

Darrell Lanigan held the point lead by four points over Billy Moyer. The first time Lanigan held the Championship point lead. The SPEED Channel cameras would catch all the action of a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event for the first time. And, at the finish of the $10,000 to win – 50 lap feature event a first time ever WoO winner would be gracing victory lane.

Senoia,GA native Clint Smith took advantage of his pole starting position hustling the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Passmore/Smith Racing GRT Race Cars/Race Tek Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo to the victory. Scott Bloomquist rode home second followed by Rick Eckert, Chub Frank and Davey Johnson.

“Our first World Of Outlaw win! It’s great we were able to get that monkey off our back as far as a World Of Outlaw win”, said the very happy winner. “Tonight we started where we should be starting these races and that’s up front. We got out front and I drove a good race. My crew done a heck of a job. They made the right tire choice with these new Hoosier Tires which are awesome. And, to get the first TV race of the year, it can’t get no better than this!”

Four winners in the first four events of the 2005 season. Could the streak continue? The chance to find out happened April 29th as the WoO Late Model Series race teams rolled into the DIRT MotorSports™ owned Lernerville Speedway in Pennsylvania for another $10,000 to win affair. Known as a wicked fast one-half mile joint Mother Nature would eventually spoil the party of speed played out in front of the SPEED Channel cameras.

Billy Moyer bolted into the lead from his pole starting position and held off Darrell Lanigan through the first half of the scheduled 50-lapper before rain made the racing surface unsafe for further competition. The field stayed on the racetrack to try and save the surface but with radar showing no let up in the showers Series officials deemed the race complete with 25 of the 50 scheduled laps completed. Moyer’s second win of the season broke the different winners streak but kept Moyer at the top of the Championship points chase. Finishing third was World of Outlaws “Rookie of the Year” candidate Josh Richards with 18th starting Steve Francis fourth and Scott Bloomquist fifth.

“Everything seemed to go just right tonight”, stated the happy winner. “We had a heck of a heat race with Rick (Eckert) and then we drew that six in the dash. We just thought we’d try some stuff in the dash and if we lose, we lose. This thing came to life in that dash with what we did. You know they (officials) were in a hurry to run everything before the rain moved in so we really didn’t have time to do anything to the car after the dash. We pretty much left it alone except for making some minor adjustments. The thing was good. When the car is that good it’s fun. I sorta wish the race would’ve been 100 laps as good as this car was tonight.”

The rain continued to fall over the next 24 hours forcing the April 30th event at Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland to be postponed until July. Two more weeks would pass before the chase for the Championship would resume. Six more months of criss-crossing the country. There was still a long way to go and it was still anyone’s game. The beginning chapters of the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season had been competitive to say the least and only began to show the glimmer of what was soon to be a dogfight to the finish.
