With the months of May and June looming on the horizon for the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series race teams the chances of making some seperation in a tight Championship points battle could be achieved. And, there was the chance to make a statement of who had a legitimate shot at the Championship.

Rolling into Ohio’s Limaland Motorsports Park for the May 13th $10,000 to win event a strong field of race teams descended on the one-quarter mile bullring with the cameras of SPEED Channel on hand to capture all the action. One notable driver missing was WoO Late Model Series regular Shane Clanton. Clanton had undergone surgery that week to repair a damaged left shoulder rotator cuff. During the April 29th event at Lernerville Speedway, Clanton’s shoulder popped out of place early in the main event. It was an injury, first happening during Clanton’s high school football days, that needed repaired now. Clanton would miss the next seven events while recovering but would receive “hardship” points until his return.

Severe weather moved over the dirt oval of L.M.P. shortly before activities were to get underway bringing with it very strong winds and a brief cloudburst. The very strong winds snapped power poles and brought down power lines throughout the area resulting in a total power failure at the speedway. After learning from power company officials that the power outage could last up to 10 hours, Series and track officials were left with no choice but to postpone the event.

The postponement at Limaland Motorsports Park gave the teams plenty of time to head for Michigan and the May 14th Butler Battlegrounds Speedway $10,000 to win show. Mother Nature tried her best to mess with the event. Overnight and early morning rains cast some doubt but the show went on as planned. For the second time in three events “Cat Daddy” Clint Smith earned a visit to Victory Lane. Starting from the pole aboard the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Jerry Passmore/Clint Smith owned GRT Race Cars/Racetek Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Smith bolted in front at the drop of the green flag holding off Darren Miller by .392 seconds in the flag to flag run. Rick Eckert, who started alongside of Smith, held on for third after chasing Smith through the early stages of the race until losing the spot to Miller on lap 15. Tim McCreadie rode home fourth with Josh Richards fifth.

“This is great to be here in victory lane again,” said Smith. “The car ran great and I think we made the right tire choice on the Hoosiers. No one really got much of a chance to work on their cars before the big race with the threat of rain moving in and the way they hurried us up. The car felt real good in the dash so we just did what we could do. It paid off.”

Smith’s second victory of the season pulled him to within twenty-eight points of Championship points leader Billy Moyer. And, only one hundred points separated Moyer from eleventh place. The Championship points chase was starting to get interesting even though the 2005 season had barely began.

One week later the World of Outlaws Late Model Series race teams headed for the uniquely shaped and wicked fast Brushcreek Motorsports Complex in Ohio. Another $10,000 awaited the winner of the May 20th event at the three-eights mile speedway featuring five turns and a dog-leg. The status of the event was in doubt as heavy overnight rains turned the low lying area into a soft, gooey mud pit. Hard work allowed the event to go, albeit two hours late, but the blazing speeds were rough on equipment. Only twelve of the original twenty-four starters completed the race including defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion Scott Bloomquist who lost two engines during the night.

Outside front row starter Dale McDowell of Chickamauga,GA beat pole sitter Chub Frank into the first turn at the drop of the green flag and never looked back aboard the Larry Shaw Race Cars/J&J Steel No. 17M Dale McDowell Racing Rocket-Shaw/Racetek Pontiac Grand Prix. 2004 World of Outlaws Late Model Series “Rookie of the Year” Tim McCreadie finished four car lengths behind McDowell with 18th starting Steve Francis third, Rick Eckert fourth and 10th starting Ricky Elliott fifth.

“Mac Daddy” seemed to be very happy to finally shake the mechanical gremlins that plagued his early season. “We’ve had a little bit of a dry spell and some bad luck but that’s the way it goes. This deal is so competitive and there are so many good racers out there that if you can run in the top 5 or top 10 anymore that’s good. We won 6 or 7 of these races last year but its been a little tougher this year. I need to thank Larry Shaw Race Cars and Rocket Chassis and my engine builder Eric Cables of Racetek. And, most of all Shane. My brother Shane. He’s the crew chief and its just us two. For two guys it ain’t too bad. And I appreciate it.”

The quarter-mile bullring of Indiana’s Tri-State Speedway beckoned the race teams the following day, May 21st, with a $10,000 to win SPEED Channel race on tap. When the World of Outlaws Late Model Series first visited Tri-State Speedway during the 2004 season, Billy Moyer looked to be a lock for the win until Dale McDowell snuck past on the final lap to steal the win. The drama of that night didn’t carry over to this years appearance. Moyer jumped out in front of the field from the get-go and was never headed visiting victory lane for the third time.

Driving the J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning/Petroff Towing No. 21 Billy Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power Chevrolet Monte Carlo, “Mr. Smooth” beat Chub Frank by 2.901 seconds for the win. Ninth starting Rick Eckert finished third with Darrell Lanigan fourth and Dale McDowell fifth.

“You know my guys have done a great job,” stated Moyer. “All my sponsors that are involved are basically the same but they make my job easier for sure. We made a few changes with my engines going to Pro Power and that’s probably helped as much as anything. Their doing a great job for me. You know the Rayburn cars, Hoosier Tires and all these people on the side of my car, I couldn’t do it without ‘em. You have good years and bad years. I’ve been at the top of the peak and I’ve been at the bottom. This year everything just sorta turned around and I really don’t why. We’re basically doing the same thing. We’ve changed a few little things on the car that we’ve found to my liking also.”

Moyer continued to lead the Championship points standings holding a thirty-eight point bulge over Rick Eckert. The battle behind the top two remained intense with only eighty-two points now separating the top nine. Scott Bloomquist was a no-show at Tri-State Speedway. Bloomquist lost two engines the night before at Brushcreek Motorsports Complex, returned to his Mooresburg,TN shop for a new powerplant and then suffered unspecified mechanical problems on his way to Tri-State Speedway. Bloomquist phoned Tri-State Speedway mid-afternoon expressing his apologies he would not be able to make it.

May was now a distant memory when the World of Outlaws Late Model Series resumed the 2005 schedule June 1st at Iowa’s Farley Speedway for a $10,000 to win show. Rick Eckert of York,PA became the sixth driver of the season to visit victory lane. Starting from the pole aboard the Raye Vest Excavating/J&J Steel No. 24 Raye Vest owned Rocket Chassis/Cornett Racing Engines Ford Taurus, “Scrub” powered into the lead at the drop of the green flag leading all 50 laps. Fourth starting Dale McDowell finished in the runner-up spot, 3.849 seconds behind Eckert, with outside pole sitter Shannon Babb third, 24th starting Steve Francis fourth and 17th starting Dan Schlieper fifth.

Eckert was relieved to get to victory lane. “Finally. Nine races in and we finally get to victory lane. Hopefully it was just late getting here and we can get a whole bunch of ‘em in the next couple of weeks. The car was really good. It was really good early when the track was slippery. The track started taking rubber late in the race but the car was still very good. I could change lanes and I think that’s why we were better than the other guys. They couldn’t really switch lanes but I could and still go good.”

News was also being made off the race track as well. World Of Outlaws Late Model Series Race Director Dean Miracle was struck by a support division racer in the Farley Speedway pit area during the warm up sessions. The veteran race official was walking across a lane leading to the staging area when he was struck. Miracle was conscious and talking and was transported to an area hospital for observation. Miracle suffered a dislocated left shoulder and bruises but returned to the speedway just prior to the feature. And, DIRT MotorSports™, owners of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, issued a statement concerning Scott Bloomquist’s absences at past events.

The June 3rd event at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska never got off the ground as overnight rain and thunderstorms continued through the day forcing cancellation of the $10,000 to win event. Traveling north to the Dakota State Fairgrounds Speedway in South Dakota for the June 4th event was once again met with rain forcing a one-day delay. More rain threatened the event on June 5th but the skies cleared allowing a WoO Late Model Series history making moment to unfold before the jammed grandstands of fans.

Tim McCreadie of Watertown,NY became the first driver in a World Of Outlaws Late Model Series sanctioned event to come from dead last to first. “T-Mac” didn’t give himself much of a chance after blowing an engine during the pole dash forcing him to a back-up car and to the rear of the field for the main event. McCreadie immediately went to the top groove of the semi-banked half-mile mile speedway breaking into the top ten by lap fifteen, then to fifth by the halfway mark and into third with ten circuits remaining. A caution for debris on lap forty-seven set up a shoot-out as McCreadie notched second running Rick Eckert with two laps to go and then shot past race long leader Darrell Lanigan on the white flag lap to seal the improbable victory. Lanigan finished 1.663 seconds behind McCreadie with Eckert third, Clint Smith fourth and Dale McDowell fifth.

The driver of the Sweeteners Plus/A & C Speedworld/Texaco-Havoline No. 39 Ann & Carl Myers owned Rocket Chassis/C & C Performance Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo was quick to give credit to his crew chief and his fellow racers for the history making performance. “I owe a lot to my guy Tommy Grecco and all these guys in the pits who help us out so much with the set-ups and the tire choices” said McCreadie. “We unloaded it and for no laps it ran good real quick.”

After an all night drive the race teams pulled into Minnesota’s Deer Creek Speedway June 6th for a $10,000 to win event played out before a standing room only crowd. Darrell Lanigan of Union,KY earned some redemption from the night before becoming the seventh driver to visit victory lane in eleven World Of Outlaws Late Model Series events. Starting from the outside pole, the “Bluegrass Bandit” jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag using every inch of the multi-grooved racing surface to maintain his lead throughout the 50 lap distance. Pole sitter Steve Francis rode home second 1.564 seconds behind Lanigan with 17 year-old sensation Josh Richards coming home third ahead of eighth starting and five-time race event champion Billy Moyer and 16th starting Trent Follmer.

The win was especially sweet for Lanigan who was bitterly disappointed in losing the event at Dakota State Fair Speedway. Lanigan told the SRO crowd from victory lane with tongue in cheek, “I was looking for a breather lid laying out there for another yellow or something.” That statement reflecting what happened the night before when Lanigan lost the lead and win. “We got her done tonight and run second last night so it was a pretty good weekend.”

With the first extended run of the season now in the history books, Moyer still held the Championship points lead but by only twenty markers over Lanigan. Eckert sat third only thirty-four points back. McDowell was another twenty behind Eckert with Francis now in fifth. Ninth place was only seventy-four points behind Moyer! The Championship was definitely shaping up to be a battle royale.

June 17th and June 18th brought the first two-day show of the 2005 season. A $20,000 to win – 100 lap affair contested on the highbanks of Jim Nier’s KC Raceway in Ohio. Jackie Boggs of Grayson,KY slayed the dragon known as the World Of Outlaws Late Model Series. Starting from outside the front row aboard the McDonalds of Grayson/Miller Bros. Coal No. 4B Steve Cascio Racing Swartz Chassis Cropper Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Boggs tracked down early race leader Rick Eckert while working lap 13 with an inside pass in turn two to snare the lead which he would never give up. Boggs had to contend with Scott Bloomquist from lap 75 to lap 93 then held off Billy Moyer by a scant .176 seconds to secure the very popular victory. Bloomquist finished third after starting 13th with Eckert fourth and Mike Balzano fifth.

“It was an awesome run”, stated the very happy winner victory lane. “The track locked down a little bit but it was real racy. We just tried to stay out of trouble and finish the race. I didn’t even take time to check the scoreboard to see who was running second. We just kept on hammering.” When told that a blanket could’ve been thrown over the top three finishers as they crossed the start/finish line all Boggs could say was, “That must’ve been a good race for the fans anyway.”

After a ten day break in the schedule, the World of Outlaw Late Model Series would face a daunting task. Eight races in sixteen days covering five states. A chance to either put yourself in solid contention for the Championship or see those hopes blow away.

It began June 27th at New York’s Ransomville Speedway. Scott Bloomquist, the defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion, arrived at the speedway to find he was without a ride. “Our car was stuck in traffic, so I was here before it arrived,” Bloomquist said of his wait for the Miller Bros. Coal/Hawkeye Trucking No. 0 Scott Bloomquist Racing Bloomquist Race Cars/Custom Engines Ford Taurus.

Bloomquist led all 60 laps for the $10,000 win, his first World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory of the year. Tim McCreadie fought off Billy Moyer for second place honors as Shane Clanton returned to the tour with a solid fourth place finish followed by Chad Ruhlman. “I knew we were close,” Bloomquist said of his first victory of the season. “We’ve been doing pretty well the last couple times out, so it was a matter of time before we won one of these.”

Two nights later Fulton Speedway in New York brought the band of travelers to town. Chub Frank of Bear Lake,PA registered his first World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory of the 2005 season in a 50-lap romp to the June 29th $10,000 pay day. Scott Bloomquist finished second holding off Rob Blair followed by Steve Francis in fourth and Todd Andrews in fifth. Frank netted the win driving the Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All-Star Performance No. 1* Chub Frank Racing Rocket Chassis/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

“I love this place,” Frank said with a wide smile. “It reminds me of Lernerville Speedway. We run the same tires and setup here as we do there. You race this track a little different, but they’re very similar and I like that track. We needed this run. We’ve been struggling. We’ve been hot and cold. The car has been good the last two or three races and the tracks are starting to get slippery and that’s what we like. Hopefully, the rest of the year is like that.”

After a long drive from New York state to New Jersey, the World of Outlaw Late Model Series teams converged on the venerable Bridgeport Speedway June 30th. With the SPEED Channel cameras capturing all the action Scott Bloomquist made a late race charge passing Darrell Lanigan with six laps remaining to capture the $10,000 to win – 50 lap main event. Lanigan had the race seemingly in command until a suspension broke allowing Bloomquist to drive his Miller Bros Coal/Hawkeye Trucking No. 0 Scott Bloomquist
Racing Bloomquist Race Cars/Custom Race Engines Ford Taurus to his second win in three events. “Rookie of the Year” candidate Josh Richards followed Lanigan across the line for third ahead of John Blankenship and Steve Francis. “This car is good,” Bloomquist said. “It’s never placed out of the top three.”

Three of eight races down. The Championship picture was starting to take shape. Billy Moyer still held the Championship points lead. Rick Eckert was only forty-six points back. Darrell Lanigan sat third fifty points behind Moyer with Steve Francis sixty-two points and Chub Frank sixty-eight points respectively behind. There was only one hundred points separating Moyer from eighth place. With the grind of July and August just around the corner it was obvious that how one did in that stretch would separate the contenders from the pretenders for the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship.
