THIRD ANNUAL MOBERLY CHALLENGE RETURNS TO 24 RACEWAY. NOT ONLY IS THIS USMTS "HUNT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP" A BIG SHOW, THIS SATURDAY WILL ALSO BE THE RESCHEDULED HORNET SPECIAL AND AUTISM AWARENESS NIGHT

by Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO: The big boys from at least eight surrounding states will be back at Moberly this weekend for Race #10 in their own "Hunt for the Championship" for the USMTS season point championships in the various regional standings. The Midwest Region currently shows Ryan Gustin with a slight lead of 8 points over Minnesota's Tommy Myer, while the Central States Region has Iowa's Kelly Shryock in front of Gustin, also of Iowa, by 36 points. Then there's the MO-KAN Region showing Jason Hughes of Oklahoma, way out in front of Shryock by 114 points. These varioius standings might be scrambled a bit after "Hunt" Race #9 on Friday, and can be viewed on their site of www.usmts.com . This Saturday's race at 24 Raceway is known as the 3rd Annual Moberly Challenge and may be pitting some of the local A-Modified regulars competing in these USMTS regional divisions, such as Kenny Mudd, Jeff Rash, Mark VanWinkle, and Mark, Matt & Tim Dotson, against the series' full time competitors, all going for the $3000 top prize money. This A-Modified race will also be filmed for a later showing on the Versus network during the off-season. Filming crews will be set up at both the north and south ends of the half-mile track in the infield.

This Saturday of August 28 will also be the rescheduled 4 cylilnder Hornet Special and these cars will compete for a bit higher purse in a 20-lap event, originally set for July. Hornet drivers will compete for a $250 first place prize in their part of the evening's three features. The Sportsman class will be the other class completing the trio of features this Saturday with an arrangement to be joined by the cars of the USRA Stockcar division for this one, as they usually come along with these A-mods on this same night.

NOTE: For all those race drivers and team owners who have not yet entered the competition at 24 Raceway this year, for this weekend and the rest of the season, there is now no track membership fee necessary. And the fuel and tire supplys have been replenished and will be available for this and the September racing nights.

Last week was to be the end to the 2010 season points racing for a Championship in the five classes of A & B-Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets at 24 Raceway. That's not the situation any longer. Due to the July 31st and August 14th rain-outs, there's currently a six week gap between the racing at Moberly and the plans are for the weekend race night of August 28 NOT to have any points awarded for the heat or feature finishes. However, there will be "show-up" points given to those cars entering the night's competition. There will be only the three classes of A-Modifieds, the Sportsman class, and Hornets racing in extended programs.

Points racing will continue into the last race of September, for 4 of the 5 regular classes at 24 Raceway, with the B-mods getting only that last night of September 25 to see who comes out on top of that class. They will be getting the show-up points for the B-Mod Championship Shoot-Out, just the same as this weekend's racers.

Now, this Saturday is also going to be a night for Autism Awareness, with information to be handed out, courtesy of TouchPoint for Central Missouri. Representatives from the Columbia office will be on site handling this, along with tee shirts and hats being made available for purchase. Donations will go toward this worthwhile cause, serving the Randolph County and surrounding areas.

And just maybe the Hornet mechanic's race can be re-scheduled into one of these next three race nights remaining. That one's been rained out a few times now and has some popular interest surrounding it.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
August 28 - USMTS re-visiting in the "Hunt for the Championship" (being taped for televised viewing) + Sportsman class and USRA Stock Cars + rescheduled 4 Cyliner Hornet Special (a 20 Lap event) NOTE: these three are the only classes scheduled to compete on this coming Saturday.
