Southern All Stars Southern Thunder Weekend
2 Full Shows!
Friday & Saturday Night July 29th and 30th!

Super Late Models $8,000 Possible to Win!
Plus Local Divisions Each Night!

Columbus, MS-A huge weekend of racing on July 29th and 30th is coming to Columbus Speedway as Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame promoter BJ Parker presents the Southern All Star’s Southern Thunder Homecoming weekend. The event will feature two complete shows as there will be a show Friday night highlighted by BJ Parker’s Southern Thunder Super Late Model Series with the $2,000 to win “Southern Thunder 40” main event plus local divisions. Then on Saturday night the legendary O’Reilly Southern All Stars Super Late Model Series will take to the high banks with the $5,000 to win “Homecoming 50” plus local divisions. Drivers and fans should note that a point fund will be rewarded to the top three Late Model drivers at the conclusion of both events as an added incentive, providing for over $33,000 in Super Late Model purse monies for the weekend.

The unique event will provide fans the opportunity to see drivers from across the south that do not typically race in the region along with many of the area fans favorites expected to be in action guarding the home turf against the outside invaders. It should be quite the mix of intersectional talent on hand trying to tame the Baddest Bullring in the South.

Fans should also note that both of these events will allow soft tire compounds, which is in vast contrast to normal rules throughout the region and used at Columbus Speedway, which typically require hard tire compounds. The use of soft tire compounds traditionally correlates to increased speeds, significantly lower lap times, and aggressive racing. Thus, there is a lot of conversation ongoing relating to whether the modern day Columbus Speedway track record of 13.36-seconds, held by Anthony Rushing, is in jeopardy. Many feel it could be shattered, given certain weather and track conditions. Nevertheless, the fans will get their only chance of the year to see the drivers race in their 750 plus horsepower, 2250 pound, alcohol burning, on open competition tires this weekend at Columbus Speedway. It should be quite a spectacle of speed.

Finally, to cap off the festivities both Don Hester and Jerry Inmon will serve as Grand Marshalls for the Saturday night Southern All Star event. Tupelo’s Don Hester was the first ever Southern All Stars champion during the inaugural season on 1983. The following year none other than the “Mississippi Flyer” Jerry Inmon of Bruce, Mississippi won the Southern All Stars championship as evidence of the deep heritage the Southern All Stars has in Mississippi. Many modern day fans may not be aware of the fact that Columbus Speedway was one of the original tracks to regularly host Southern All Stars event since the series inception. The first Southern All Star race at held at Columbus Speedway during the 1983 season saw Louisiana’s Chick Boyd take the win. BJ Parker has promoted many events both sanctioned and unsanctioned at the famed oval and has always considered it one of his favorite tracks because of the racers and also because of the hospitality of the Mississippi racing community itself.

All the exciting local divisions will be in action including Open Wheel Modifieds, Late Model Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Cruisers, and Hot Shots. All local division classes will be competing each night.

Adult admission is only $15 on Friday night and $20 on Saturday night. Plus family friendly pricing will be in effect with children ages 10 and under admitted free; while student ages 11 to 18 and military personnel are admitted for only $10. Fans should note that coolers and lawn chairs are welcome. Fans can also here the Columbus Speedway PA system FM broadcast on FM 88.5. Racing action scheduled to begin at 8pm each night.
