CONCORD, NC (November 6, 2002) – “You know, I have won this Pennzoil World of Outlaws championship and it was great, but once you have won it, let me tell you… second ****s!”
Those are the thoughts of Danny “The Dude” Lasoski, driver of the #20 J.D. Byrider / Tony Stewart Motorsports sprint car. Danny says that because he will be the runner-up in this year’s Pennzoil World of Outlaws final tally, but after he takes a look back at the season he’s had, he will realize it was a season of career bests.
Lasoski’s championship hopes were dashed after missing four races during the late summer months due to injuries he sustained in an accident at Williams Grove Speedway (PA). Statistically, though, the season has been a good one for Lasoski. There are plenty of high points to hang his hat on until the 2003 season starts up in only a few short months from now.
This season started off well, as “The Dude” opened up defense of his 2001 Championship with a win at Kings Speedway in California. Only a few weeks later, Lasoski found victory lane again, this time at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma. That brought Lasoski to half of his total “A” feature wins of his championship campaign. By mid-April, Lasoski already had matched those four “A” feature victories of a year ago.
Soon enough, Lasoski was in the midst of a heated points battle with the “King of the Outlaws,” Steve Kinser. Over the summer, the two swapped the points lead over a dozen times before Lasoski’s July accident that put him out of the seat for four races.
Lasoski made his return at the Knoxville Nationals and that may be the highlight of 2002. Driving hurt, he captured the pole for the legendary event and eventually finished second. Only weeks later, he was back in victory lane after another “A” feature win.
Lasoski’s stats of 2002 resemble that of a champion. In fact, add the points he missed in those four races and he might have his second-straight title.
In 2002, Lasoski has recorded a career high in “A” feature victories (13), top-fives (42), laps led (382), fast qualifying times (13) and O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash wins (19). All those figures top his stats of 2001’s championship year. “The Dude” has two more races to add to those stats this weekend, as the WoO Series wraps up its season.
The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series’ 25th season will climax at Las Vegas (NV) Motor Speedway Friday and Saturday. The series will honor its outstanding teams Sunday evening during its 25th Annual Awards Banquet at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino.
