Aaron Marrant Conquers ‘Mighty’ Modified Contingent … Josh Fisher Makes it Six in a Row, as Rollert, Evinger and Carter all Return to C.M.S. Victory Lane!

Warrensburg, MO

Once again Mother Nature spared the evening’s racing action as 81 cars in the 5 Contingency Connection classes signed in to compete in 18 different races for all who were in attendance on Better Country KIX 105.7 FM Radio Race Night at C.M.S. Aaron Marrant of Richmond, MO, took home a popular and hard-fought win in the ‘Mighty’ Modified class. Josh Fisher of Smithton, MO, continued his hot streak by picking up his sixth feature win of the year in the 305 Sprint Car class. Marc Carter of Warrensburg drove his familiar red number 10 to victory lane in the Street Stocks, with Brett Rollert taking the Limited Late Model win and Mark Evinger picking up a repeat win in the new B-modified class.

The Limited Late Models kicked off the night with two heat races. Kevin ‘the kid’ Coyne of Kingsville, MO, and James Rutlidge of California, MO, picked up the wins and earned front-row starting spots for what should have been a 15-lap feature event. From the drop of Hershel Thompson’s green flag this race was destined for trouble. The old saying you can’t win a race on the first lap was never more true as a couple of re-starts and several incidents on lap one led to several drivers’ nights ending early. Coyne, who had jumped out to the early lead experienced mechanical failure down the back straightaway on lap two right in front of a heated battle for second position between Rutlidge and Jason Estes. Although they did all they could to avoid Coyne and each other, the Rutlidge and Estes cars ended up making contact with Estes receiving the worst end of the damage. Both Estes and Coyne were done for the night as a result of the incident and with Rutlidge’s spin; he was relegated to the tail end of the field for the re-start. Now down to eight cars, the field took the green flag with Walt Imhoff inheriting the lead. Imhoff’s lead didn’t last too long as the charging Rollert easily powered his way through the field to take the lead. Caution flew again on lap 5 for yet another incident in turn three as Lannie Wineland received heavy damage and was also out for the night. Rutlidge unfortunately was involved in his second caution flag and he and Wineland also were relegated to the pits, done for the night. Jimmy Morris experienced mechanical woes during this event and also was done for the night as was Imhoff. Now, with the field down to just four competitors, the race was cut to 10 laps due to a call from promoter Earl Walls. Rollert easily cruised to his third feature win of the year in his #93 GRT late model sponsored by KB Painting, KC Gutter Tech, Buzzard Racing Engines, National Agents Alliance and Leroy Guthrie Signs & Lettering Graphics car over Jamie Wineland second, Richard Leigh third and Derick Schlarb finishing fourth.

Pole sitter and earlier heat-race winner Austin Alumbaugh brought the 305 Sprints to the green flag for their main event. Due to a couple false starts the race was red flagged and the cars were stopped on the front straightaway as track owner/promoter Earl Walls had to re-explain the race-start procedures to the drivers. On the ensuing re-start the sprinters got it right and were lined up side-by-side coming out of turn four to receive Hershel Thompson’s green flag. Unfortunately a couple of laps into the race, the cars of Kevin Roth and Brad Ryun made contact on the front stretch with Roth’s car being too damaged to continue. Alumbaugh maintained his lead after the race returned to green-flag status until Josh Fisher shot past him on lap four. Fisher easily raced his way to his sixth-consecutive feature win in the #86 Fisher’s Concrete, Little Big Horn Cattle Co, R&C Adventures, TCI Tire Center Inc., Smart Growth Industries, Cook’s Fabrication, Charlie’s Taxidermy, Ray’s Custom Butchering and Bell Weld-sponsored 305 Sprint Car. Alumbaugh held on to second position with Hoenshell third, Ryun fourth and Roth completing the top five.

The point’s battle in the Street Stock class this year has been hotly contested all season long and once again the quest for the championship in this division led to some of the best racing of the night. Heat-race winners included Marc Carter, Jay Lyle and long-distance traveler Tammy Korff of Fulton, MO. With his heat-race win, Carter took the green flag at the front of the 18-car starting field for the 15-lap feature event and quickly set sail in search of his second feature win of the year. After an early re-start, Carter and Lyle were battling up front with Brett Nail and Korff in hot pursuit. On lap four, point’s leader Bobby Raybourn experienced mechanical failure on his #23 car as his night came to an early ending. Herb Dannar, Jay Lyle, Brett Cayer, Robin Rufener, Josh Guy and Dustin Summers also had mechanical issues and were unable to finish the race. After Lyle exited with a flat tire and the race went back to green-flag status Carter found himself under pressure from Brett Nail of Raytown. Carter later stated that “the steering wheel nearly spun out of his hands,” which almost caused him to spin out coming off of turn two and Nail challenging him for the lead. The two raced side-by-side until lap 13 when Nail spun while battling Carter for the lead heading out of turn two. After the race resumed, it was Korff who made her way up to second and now looking to challenge Carter for the win. In the end Carter was once again too strong for the field in his Ace Carwash, Heating & Cooling Specialist, AMACO and Fan Club-sponsored Street Stock and picked up another CMS feature win. Korff brought her car to the line in second followed by Cole Wimmer, Bryant Moyer, Doug Walrath and Jeff Lazenby rounding out the top six positions.

The B-modifieds were next up for their Contingency Connection driver bonus program main event with ‘Mountain Man’ Mark Evinger starting on pole position as a result of his earlier heat-race victory. Evinger led the 7-car field to the green flag and drove his number 15 machine to his second-consecutive feature win of the year. Young driver Tyler Lewis of Columbia raced his way to a second-place run with new driver Robert Littrell of Gilliam, MO, finishing in third and also collecting the random draw extra Contingency Connection driver bonus award. Tony Nelson of Blue Springs came home in fourth and Chris Akers of Higginsville was fifth. The cars of Greg Marrant and Jerimiah Saling failed to go to the technical inspection area upon completion of the event and were disqualified from the finishing order by CMS officials.

Thirty-six ‘Mighty’ Modifieds were on hand as drivers from the local vicinity arrived late due to several area tracks being unable to run their programs due to rainouts. With next week’s $3,000-to-win special on tap, some of these drivers were also trying to register their second start at the track, which would free them from paying the $100 entry fee for racing at least twice before the big-money race. It took five heat races and one b-main with the top four from each of these events transferring to the feature event. Heat winners were Mike Ryan, Aaron Marrant, Jake Richards, Tyler Hibner and Joe Bradshaw with Terry Schultz picking up the win in the b-main. Ryan was scheduled to start on the pole but was unfortunately sidelined by mechanical failure, which led to Aaron Marrant leading the 24-car field to the drop of the green flag. There is no other modified racing action like that which occurs at CMS week in and week out and this was evidenced by the competitors competing in what was yet another CMS barn burner with action all over the track as drivers cleanly raced their hardest for every single position. Up front it was Kansas City, KS, driver Jake Richards who led the field as he rode the cushion around the high side. Richards was hooked up raising his left front around the turns and led a good portion of the race, battling lap after lap with Aaron Marrant. The two swapped the lead several times but unfortunately Richards had to exit the race with a flat tire bringing his excellent run to an end. Point’s leader ‘Mighty’ Joe Bradshaw also exited the race early with a flat tire as ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer, Charles ‘Lightning’ Laizure, Shawn Bunns, and Steve Tiedman were also unable to finish and were done for the night. Upon the lap 13 re-start Marrant resumed the lead and began to fill pressure from Warrensburg driver Dean Wille. Wille himself was under pressure from the ‘Clinton Missile’ Dennis Walrath, who had moved into the top three from his row four starting position. Another lap 13 re-start saw Donnie Dannar loop his car in turns three bringing out the caution flag. At the same time, Chad Lyle of Lone Jack had moved all the way up from his 17th starting position into fifth place! Once the field went back to green-flag racing Marrant, Wille and Walrath had the fans in the stands on their feet with some great side-by-side racing until contact between ‘Fast’ Richard Layne and Jim Moody brought out another caution flag. Moody’s car made hard contact with the front-stretch wall putting an end to both his and Layne’s night. In a separate incident Buddy Benedict also made contact with the wall and was unable to continue as well. The lap 17 re-start had Marrant barely holding on to his lead as Wille and Walrath and now Lyle made up the top four spots. Marrant had his car hooked up on the high side trying to fend of Wille who was running the middle lane with Walrath choosing the low side during the final three laps of the race. In the end, Marrant’s horsepower down the straightaways and driving talent allowed him to claim the win in the Scott Racing, Full Throttle Raceworks family-sponsored #70 for his first-ever main event win. Marrant thanked his wife and entire family in victory lane stating who couldn’t do it without them as he cashed in on the $1,000-to-win weekly ‘Mighty’ Modified payout, the highest in the entire nation as well as bonus awards from the Contingency Connection. Wille and Walrath crossed the line in second and third with Lyle settling for fourth. Kyle Westerhold, Tyler Hibner, ‘Chargin’ Charlie Ebert, Kevin Sloan, Jesse Wheeler and Terry Schultz completed the top ten. Wheeler and Danner were also Contingency Connection bonus award winners after a random draw.
