(Warrensburg, MO) A rare Sunday night race program took place at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway last night as Aaron Marrant came away with a surprise last-lap win and the big money after taking the checkered flag in the annual Labor Day weekend 40-lap modified special event in front of an enthusiastic and somewhat stunned crowd. There were a total of 36 modifieds on hand for the night’s program along with 16 street stocks, and 27 b-modifieds, for a total of 79 cars in the three race divisions.

With the big money on the line, three heat races helped sort out the night two modified scramble, a 20-lap event in which the top twelve finishers went on to join the night one scramble top twelve finishers to complete the main-event lineup. Modified competitors once again competed under the passing points system as each driver tried to improve his finishing position to gain as many points as possible. The hotly contested heat races were claimed by Aaron Poe, Jimmy Hernandez, and Wesley Summers with Dustin Boney coming away with a win in the b-main event. After the preliminary races were through for the modifieds, the top twelve passing-point earning drivers then came to the front stretch to re-draw for the scramble starting positions and it was Hernandez and Dave Meyer drawing numbers one and two for the start of the scramble. Meyer wound up with the victory in the night two scramble and went on to start on the outside of row number one later in the night for the main event. The field was now set for the main event to cap off a fantastic weekend of racing.

Don Crnkovich, winner of the night one scramble, and Meyer, night two's winner started on the pole positions leading the 24-car field to Hershel Thompson’s initial green flag, it was Crnkovich who jetted out to an early lead with Meyer and Mark Dotson in hot pursuit. A caution period fell on the field early on as Terry Schultz's car stalled on the front stretch, relegating him to a 24th-place finish. Don Dannar was the next car out of the event as he exited with a flat tire. Crnkovich, Dotson, and now Justin Boney held down the top three positions through lap eight. The caution flag again waved on the field on lap 8 for Steven Bowers, Jr. who spun on the track, relegating him to the tail end of the field on the restart. By lap eleven, Dotson made the charge to the helm, reportedly without any brakes in the car, as he led the lap ahead of Crnkovich and Justin Boney. Hard racing on the ultra smooth and multi-groove track was the order of the rest of the race as a furious battle for the lead between Dotson, Crnkovich, Justin Boney, Meyer, and Marrant ensued over the next several laps. On lap 15, Johnny Fennewald's night came to an end as he exited the speedway with Crnkovich now leading the way over Justin Boney and Dotson. On lap 17, Justin Boney put his number 18 race machine out front with Crnkovich slipping to second position. At the halfway point of the race, the top six consisted of Justin Boney, Dotson, Crnkovich, Marrant, Jason Thompson, and a fast-approaching Dustin Boney. Justin Boney held the lead until lap twenty-eight, when Dotson again narrowly led for one lap, his lead was short-lived however as Justin Boney quickly regained the top spot and appeared to be cruising on to a big win at CMS. As Justin Boney took the white flag while leading, signaling one more lap to go, he looked to be comfortably in the lead; however, coming off of turn four to take the checkered flag, Justin Boney had trouble maneuvering one of the lapped cars on the track with his car coming to rest just off the turn in lap. What turned out to be complete heartbreak for Justin Boney, turned out to be a case of in the right place at the right time for Aaron Marrant, who sailed around Boney on the high side and claimed his "biggest ever win" at CMS. Behind Marrant in first were Jason Thompson, who started in ninth, Dustin Boney, who started in twentieth, Mark Dotson, Don Crnkovich, and seventeenth-starting Luke Feeback to round out the top.

Up next were the b-modifieds for their three heat races as the 27 drivers in attendance were competing for track points for the 2009 championship hunt. For heat number one, Mike Higley picked up the win over Bryan Montgomery and Ethan Isaacs. Troy Carlyle looked strong for the win in heat two ahead of Brad Smith and Bronson Combs. Michael King, Jeremy Lile and Lucas Isaacs came across the line first through third in the final heat race of the night. Tyler Lewis, made a rare CMS appearance and came away with the win in the b-main event. A caution field feature took place for the b-modifieds as drivers could not seem to find a race rhythm early in the event. It did not take long for Smith to race his way to the front as he was looking for his tenth victory at the track, and 27th overall victory for the year. Carlyle raced his way to a comfortable early race lead over Smith, Carlyle, and Brian Montgomery. The field was now set for the 15-lap main event for the street stock racers with Carlyle leading the opening laps and Smith close behind for the win. In the end, no one had anything for Smith as the checkered flags flew, Smith went on to claim yet another feature win with Carlyle in second, Bryan Montgomery, Ethan Isaacs, Michael King and Lucas Isaacs settling for top six runs by the end of the night.

Street Stock drivers were the final racers to take to the track for their two exciting heat races as 16 cars filled the pit area. Street Stock drivers were also racing for valuable season championship track points as the season comes to an end next week. Heat race winners were the top two drivers in the overall season championship standing with Michael Mullins claiming heat one and Bryan Johnson racing to the win in heat-race two. The two heat race leaders started on the pole for the 15-lap feature with Johnson holding down the top spot early in the race action. Meanwhile, behind the leader, new driver Chris Reif searched for race lines and came away in second-place, just ahead of Mullins in third. Johnson, another multiple time feature winner who, appeared to be making another bid for a feature victory had to leave the track with a mechanical issue. With five laps to go and while leading, the car put off a heavy puff of smoke and ended Brian Johnson's night as Mullins tried to close the point gap between the two drivers. Chris Reif raced his way to the checkered flags to claim his first-ever win at the track. Herb Dannar, Conley, Mike Mullins, Nic Bennett and John Miller rounded out the top six.

Only one weekend of racing remains at CMS for the 2009 season as the year comes to an end with the season championships in all divisions next Saturday, September 12th. Normal racing returns with all four divisions next week as champions will be crowned in each division, the modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds. Pit gates open at 4:30, spectator gates open at 5, driver’s meeting, and pill draw closes at 6:30, hot laps start at 7, and heat-race action begins at 7:30.
