The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings went through quite a few significant changes during the weekend in Missouri.
Steve Kinser passed Missouri’s Danny Lasoski for the points lead, turning a four-point deficit into a four-point advantage by winning his fourth and fifth "A" Features of the season. "The King of the Outlaws" was dominant, leading all 25 laps at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway and all 40 at I-55 Raceway. The scorecard for Eldora Speedway, the next stop on the series’ schedule, reads Kinser 26, Lasoski 0.
Steve’s son, Kraig, was extremely impressive in time trials, pacing both qualifying sessions. Kraig was .172 seconds faster than Lasoski at Sedalia, where "The Dude" has won three main events. Lasoski, who leads the series with five quick times, was also second quick at I-55, .158 seconds off Kraig’s pace-setting lap.
Oklahomans Daryn Pittman and Shane Stewart climbed to their highest rankings of their careers. Pittman, from Owasso, OK, drove Sher-Don Motorsports’ #21 Hop & Sack J&J into sixth place from outside the sixth row at Sedalia. Moving from a fast, semi-banked, ½-mile oval to a tricky, high-banked, 1/3-mile track didn’t bother the 2002 Manufacturers' Hard Charger award winner, who passed six cars to finish eighth at I-55. Pittman, the 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion, moved into fourth place in the standings, one point ahead of Mark Kinser.
Stewart, the runner-up in last year’s Gumout Series points race, passed Jac Haudenschild and Jeff Shepard to take over sixth place in the standings. Since failing to qualify for the season-opening main event at Kings Speedway, the Bixby, OK, native has been as consistent as anybody, driving the #4M MIN Motorsports MCI into the top 10 in 10 of the last 11 "A" Features.
Stewart leads Jason Sides by 58 points in their battle for the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award.
Stewart, team owner Scott Chilcutt and mechanics Rob Hart and Cathy Barrows welcomed Express Transit as a new associate sponsor in late March. MIN Motorsports Management is the team’s major sponsor and Cox Communications and Pro Lube Center are the other associates.
Haudenschild, who was tied with Lasoski for the points lead after two events, took an unfortunate tumble in the standings. "The Wild Child" raced into 19th place from inside the 12th row after qualifying 28th quick in the 32-car field at Sedalia. The weekend went from bad to worse in Pevely, as Haudenschild hit the turn-four retaining wall and flipped while battling Jonathan Alard for third place during the First Heat Race. Guy Forbrook and his crew were unable to repair the #5 MPD Hand Controls/Wirtgen America Maxim in time for "The Wild Child" to return to the track.
Defending Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart ranks seventh in the NASCAR standings, just four points behind Matt Kenseth after finishing sixth in Sunday’s Virginia 500. He won Friday’s 360 race at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway. Dave Blaney, who won the 1995 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series championship, ranked seventh in the Winston Cup point standings several weeks ago. He dropped to 24th with a 31st-place finish in Martinsville, VA. The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series races at Blaney’s facility, Sharon Speedway, May 30th and July 30th.
