Inside Line Promotions - JONESTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 24, 2018) - Joey Amantea closed his 2018 campaign with a strong rally last weekend at Linda's Speedway during the 29th annual National Open.
Amantea was one of 50 drivers in the 600cc winged micro sprint division that tackled the event. However, it didn't get off to a great start.
"We had the wrong setup on the car," he said. "It was pretty much inexperience. In the two years I've ran 600cc micro sprints we've done 130 races and ran winged 11 times. We're wingless guys."
Amantea qualified 38th quickest and he placed ninth in a heat race on Friday. The event concluded on Saturday when the features were contested. Amantea advanced from eighth to seventh place in the C Main to transfer into the back of the B Main. He then maneuvered from 14 th to 10th and narrowly missed a transfer into the main event. However, Amantea was awarded a provisional to tag the back of the field based on being the track's highest points earner this season out of the drivers who didn't make the show.
"As the weekend went on it got better and better," he said. "We started 30 th and got up to 13th I think, but I don't have power steering and we did a 26-lap run. My arms were so tired so I lost some positions. I somehow got 19th, which was good."
Amantea finished with a 19th-place result.
"I would have liked to end the season wingless because I think that I have a better chance of winning," he said. "Given that we haven't raced a lot of wingless races, to end 19th out of 50 cars was a nice way to end the season."
