The AAA Missouri State Fair Races closed out Sunday night with John Anderson taking a hard-fought victory in the 30-lap O’Reilly Midwest Late Model Racing Association feature event, while Brian Brown topped a stellar field of 360 Sprint Cars from the O’Reilly Winged Outlaw Warriors and the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series’ Midwest Division.

Prerace buzz in the Late Model Division was about late model legend Billy Moyer Jr., who was attempting to win his third feature of the weekend at Sedalia. Already having copped a Friday night MSRA win and the MLRA feature at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday, Moyer was predicted by many to use his inside second row starting spot to take yet another MLRA feature. It didn’t work out that way.

From the start, polesitter Will “The Thrill” Vaught pulled out to a commanding lead and held off challenges from both Moyer and Al Humphrey in the early going. A lap 14 caution proved to be the turning point in the race, as Moyer pitted with a flat right front tire and Anderson moved up to Vaught’s rear bumper on the restart. On lap 18, Anderson powered by Vaught, who was able to hold on for second over a charging Terry Phillips, who advanced from a 15th starting spot.

In Victory Lane, Anderson said, “I didn’t know if we’d be a factor or not. We were way too tight in the first 10 laps, and then the track kind of came back to us. It’s always a great thing to beat Moyer, though, especially after he snookered me with a couple of laps to go last night!”

Humphrey turned in a stellar run to finish fourth, followed by Tony Jackson Jr., Joe Kosiski, Bryant Goldsmith, Moyer, Jeremy Payne, and Pat Doar. In all, 44 late models and 30 Sprints checked into the Sedalia pits.

In the Sprint car portion of the doubleheader, it looked early as if the night might be an Omaha benefit. At the green, Jack Dover appeared to be as intent on winning as fellow Omahan Anderson. However, Brown, who has visited Sedalia’s victory lane on numerous occasions, tracked Dover down and passed him on the fourth lap. From there, it was a matter of working traffic and surviving three restarts before Brown took the checkers. “It just feels great to get SuperClean and Factory Motor Parts back into Victory Lane,” a sleep-deprived Brown told us. “We just got in from Jackson, Minnesota, at 9 AM this morning, and none of us have had more than about an hour and a half of sleep. This is a great pick-me-up, though – none of us looks really tired right now!”

Behind Brown, a spirited battle waged for positions 2nd through 4th between Dover, Jesse Hockett, and Randy Martin. Over the course of the 25 laps, those three shared those positions in all possible combinations. At the finish, however, Hockett emerged in second, with Martin third and Dover fourth. Rounding out the top ten were Jonathan Cornell, John Corbin, Chad Humston, Josh Fisher, Austen Wheatley, and Mark Shirshekan. The race had one red flag incident, a lap 2 flip by Cody Baker. Baker was unhurt, but his machine was unable to continue.
