Millstadt, Ill. (April 27, 2008) – Brent Anderson led off the 2008 O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Series Presented by Lucas Oil season with a victory in Saturday’s opener at Macon (Ill.) Speedway, his inaugural win.

The Belleville native bested 21 others on the quarter-mile track, including Gary “Bubba” Altig, whom he passed on a restart on Lap 18. The pair shared the front row and Altig surged into the lead on the start, running the high and middle grooves early.

Anderson made the winning move on the inside, however, on Altig, and never looked back, beating Altig across the line by about four car lengths. Anderson is also the early leader in the point standings as a result of the win.

Rounding out the top five were Davey Ray, Brent Beauchamp and Danny Stratton, all former Midget champions in other Midwest series.

Defending series champion Brad Loyet had a tough start to his 2008 campaign, finishing 11th.

Friday’s race at Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill. was originally scheduled as the season opener, but inclement weather forced cancellation of the event.

In Saturday’s O’Reilly POWRi Micro-Sprint race at Macon, Eric Edwards topped a 22-car field with his first career series victory. Edwards led the final six laps in his machine after passing Ryan Guyett on the inside on Lap 15. In addition, Edwards is the season’s early point leader.

Nathan Benson was second, followed by Tony Roney, Guyett – who led the opening 14 laps – and Devon Piper. Like his counterpart Loyet in the Midget race, defending Micro champion Dereck King struggled in the Micro feature, finishing 21st.
