(Warrensburg) The sizzling hot racing action matched the equally hot weather at Central Missouri Speedway for the RSC Rental Street Stock $1,000 to win Special on Saturday night. Terry Schultz a Modified driver from Sedalia drove the Michael Grant machine to the checkers for the $1000 feature win in the Street Stock division. Eighty three drivers from Kansas and Missouri treated CMS race fans to several down to the wire finishes during their feature events. Shawn Williams out of Knob Noster and Rolla came out on top with his Monte Carlo Limited Late Model for his first feature win of the season. D. J. DeMotte from Basehor, Kansas was another first time feature winner when his B- Modified crossed the finish line in first place. Then the fans were treated to the best Street Stock race of the year with the feature event producing 25 laps of tremendous back and forth racing around the CMS high banks. The feature was an extremely close finish with Terry Schultz driving the JCH Embry Farms, Extreme Motors, Haulotte Contruction Services, Matco Tools, Street Stock to the checkered flag for his first Street Stock feature win of this season.

Shawn Williams and Brett Rollert started in the front row of the Late Model feature with Williams driving into the early lead after winning the second heat race of the evening along with Brett Rollert in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, Kevin Coyne picked his way through the field into fourth place while Rollert attempted to work the high and low side on lap four to see if he could pass Williams. Coyne kept a close eye on the battle up front and eventually worked his way into a solid third place finish. Rollert did attempt a final side by side pass on the last lap, but Williams held on to take his first feature win of the season. Steve McDowell and Jamie Wineland were the Contingency Connection bonus award winners along with Williams.

The B-Modified main event feature produced a first time feature win for D. J. DeMotte when he drove his B-Modified from the front row into victory lane. DeMotte held the early lead with Chris Akers challenging him on the opening lap from the front row. Mark Evinger worked his way up from the fourth row and made a great pass on the low side to take second place early in the race. Evinger then passed DeMotte from the low side on the next lap, but a caution came out to nullify the position change. Evinger kept up the pace and passed him again after the lap three re-start. DeMotte quickly learned from Evinger’s early attempts with a nice move under him between turns three and four then kept him behind him for the rest of the race. Tony Nelson, the division points leader had to leave the track late in the race with some mechanical problems, but finished sixth.

The Mighty Modified heat races were action packed once again with some great racing action all around the track on a hot evening. Heat races winners were familiar CMS drivers including Chad Lyle, Dennis Walrath, Joe Bradshaw and Alan Deatherage setting up the field of thirty four registered modifieds. Lyle started from the pole position and led the feature to the green flag with twenty eight cars behind him. Joe Bradshaw had some early misfortune when he was bumped into an infield tire and had to leave the track with mechanical issues on his front end. Walrath quickly drove his car into second place and pressured Lyle for the remainder of the race. Several other drivers had to leave the track with various mechanical problems, but the feature race became a concern for Lyle again as he worked his way through lapped traffic with Walrath directly on his tail trying to find a way around him. The veteran driver from Lone Jack hung on to his lead throughout the remainder of the race and prevailed for his first Mighty Modified feature victory at CMS this season after a series of tough breaks earlier this year.

Terry Schultz pulling double duty in the Street Stocks and Modifieds made some good moves from his thirteenth place start on the fourth row into a fifth place finish. The Hibners from Chillicothe also pushed hard up front with strong finishes from Lonnie and Tyler in third and fourth place. Lee Hibner ran off the track on the last lap and finished in eighth place after a scary ride through the infield. Other solid top ten finishes came from CMS regulars Dave Myers, Kevin Sloan, Jesse Wheeler and Jake Richards.

The Street Stock feature was a great display of driving from top to bottom with three strong drivers at the front of the field. Marc Carter started on the pole position and held the lead for most of the race with Modified drivers, James McMillin and Terry Schultz making life miserable for Carter. Early on it appeared Carter would be the strong car to beat, but McMillin and Nathan Himes worked their way just behind Carter to pressure him for the lead after a first lap mechanical problem for Brain Johnson. Meanwhile, Schultz driving the 38 car normally driven by Michael Grant began to move into fourth place. McMillin actually passed Carter for the lead on lap eight, but Carter once again moved back into the lead with another move around McMillin. On lap nine Himes has to go to the tail of the field after spinning out in turn four. This moves Schultz into third place and for rest of the feature race Carter, McMillin and Schultz go back and forth between first, second and third place. Another veteran driver, Jay Lyle battled from a thirteenth place start into fourth, but could not quite make it into the top three.

Schultz used the high side as he used to in the division to move up and around the other drivers. Late in the race on lap twenty three McMillin slipped slightly in turn four to put Schultz up just behind Carter for the final push to the checkers. Then in a photo finish Schultz takes the $1000 feature victory with Carter just behind him in second place and McMillin in third. Also making the feature event were Modified drivers Alan Deatherage and Doug Walrath driving double duty in the big money feature.

It was heart warming to see the CMS family respond to the Street Stock driver Bill O’Bryan family tragedy with a $2,000 donation to the family. The O’Bryans expressed their thanks to everyone after the presentation on the infield. Thanks to all the CMS drivers and fans for helping to collect funds during intermission.
