Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Big 10 Cup race #1
By Dennis Bowling

Alabama Hot Shoe, Daniel Miller set quick time during time trials then was impressive in leading start to finish to pick up his first ever "Big 10 Cup" series victory Saturday night at Winchester Speedway.

Daniel finished third(behind Jerry Owens and Jon Miller) in the final Big 10 point standings following the 2003 season and was determined to improve on his fortunes in 2005. Daniel just missed the tri-fecta, as it were, as Miller topped all 35 racers during time trials with a sizzling 14.72 lap(just 4 one thousandths off the Steel Head Late Model record set in 2003 at 14.68). Daniel’s wire to wire win also placed him in the early points lead for the season long 10 race series set at Winchester and Duck River Speedway.

Miller’s race was anything but easy as group two fast qualifier David Jackson was all over Miller just before the half way mark as the Top six were tightly bunched while working lapped traffic. A lap 17 caution flag allowed Miller some breathing room on the track and he would lead the final 18 circuits to the checkered flag. A late race charge by Lamar Scoggins netted the Cleveland, Tennessee super star a runner-up finish. Scoggins made a high side pass on Jackson with three to go to nab second spot but was simply out of laps as far as going after Miller. Perhaps the drive of the night belonged to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee’s Mark Fields. Mark came from his twelfth starting spot by taking the high side and making a determined effort all night long. Three time winner Corey Posey edged former Big 6 Champion(The Big 10 series was initially a six race series in 2002) Byron Michael for the fifth spot.

The thirty five Late Models were split into two groups with Miller leading group one while Jackson led group two during time trials. Eight racers, from each group, were locked in to the 35 lap feature through qualifications while the final eight spots came from the Top four in each of two last chance races.

Last week’s winner David Brannon and Brandon Brown were the last chance race winners.

Shelbyville’s Larry Landers was quick on this night as Landers broke the existing 2-BBL Track record by over a tenth of a second(albeit the mark held up for less than two minutes as former record holder Billy Barnett recaptured the record with a lap of 15.51) with a lap of 15.64 then out-dueled record holder Barnett and Chad Bone to grab the 2-BBL LM feature for his first ever win at Winchester.
