Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 18, 2008) – After a season's absence, the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region returns to Rapid City, South Dakota's Black Hills Speedway for a weekend double this Friday and Saturday night.
And, while the series makes its first Black Hills stop since July of 2006, a past series champion returns to action after a similar absence.
Randi Miller, the 2003 ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion, is expected for his first series action since capturing his series' best 38th win at Black Hills Speedway on July 7, 2006.
While Miller joins in on the action aboard Scott Milan's No. 4m mount, 17-year-old Derrik Ortega of Albuquerque, NM, continues his quest to become the eighth different ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion in as many years.
Ortega carries a healthy 197 point lead over Billings, MT, shoe Jeremy McCune into the weekend, with only the September 19-20 double at Aztec Speedway remaining after the Black Hills pair of events.
A mere 12 points separate third from sixth in points, with Chad Corken (Highland Ranch, CO) holding a slight advantage over Jake Ossenfort (Rapid City, SD), Bob Schaeffer (New Castle, CO) and Colt Treharn (Los Lunas, NM). Danielle Ossenfort, also of Rapid City, is just 28 points behind Treharn in seventh.
The balance of the current top ten in series points includes Justin Wolf Medlock (Colorado Springs, CO), Dustin Hall (West Valley City, UT) and Mark Sweet (Rock Springs, WY).
Racing action gets under way at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night.
Black Hills Speedway is located in Rapid City, SD, three miles south of I-90 Exit 61, then 0.5 miles east on SR 44.
The eighth year of action for the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region is slated to consist of 16 events at seven tracks throughout Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska in 2008.
The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with a dozen different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
