UNION, KY -- A stout field of 53 NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modifieds packed the pits at Florence Speedway Saturday night with local hotshoe Billy Vaughn walking away with his first career win with the series.

Second VP Fuels Makin' Power Heat Race Winner David McWilliams used his outside front row starting position to dart into the early lead with the field stacked up two and three wide behind of him. 6th-starting Billy Vaughn wasted no time picking his way through the pack as well as 13th-starting Joey Kramer. Before McWilliams was able to distance himself from the rest of the field a lap 6 caution slowed the pace.

The second caution flag of the race flew just a few circuits later with McWilliams still on the point. On the restart, Vaughn closed in on the race leader as the Florence regulars diced it out for the top spot with fast qualifier Chad Kinder, as well as Ted Nobbe and Don Adams looking on. Ten laps into the race, Vaughn pulled alongside McWilliams in a bid for the lead, but didn't have the momentum to complete the pass. Further back behind the lead duo, 18th-starting Brent Mullins was quietly working his way through the field as third palce Kinder fell to the infield.

Back up front, Vaughn's continuous hounding of McWilliams finally paid off as he powered into the front spot on lap 13. Vaughn wasted no time putting distance between himself and McWilliams seemingly putting his Bob Pierce built #112 on cruise control. Just after the halfway point, Kramer looked to crack the top five as Mullins moved into the top ten.

Despite a few cautions late in the race, Vaughn would not be denied the $1,500 first-place paycheck. When the checkered flag flew, Billy Vaughn would be the first to cross the stripe, notching his first ever NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modified win. McWilliams held on for second with Nobbe third, Mullins from 18th to 4th, and Kramer from 13th to 5th.
