Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg,TN captured his third World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series sanctioned main event of the season Sunday afternoon leading from flag to flag in the $12,000 to win “14th Annual Best Western Illinois Fall Nationals 30” at the one mile Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield,IL. Starting from the pole the 2004 World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series champion kept his Miller Brothers Coal Company/Hawkeye Trucking No. 0 Scott Bloomquist Racing Bloomquist Race Cars/Vic Hill Engines Ford Mustang in front despite an oil leak which caused some visibility problems for the winner. Outside pole sitter Rick Eckert rode home in second a car length behind Bloomquist with fifth starting Billy Moyer third, Josh Richards fourth and eighth starting Tim McCreadie fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were sixth place finisher Brian Birkhofer followed by Dale McDowell, eleventh starting Shane Clanton, Steve Francis and seventeenth starting Mark Voigt.

Bloomquist felt that his day wasn’t the best despite taking the win stating, “After the rough night we had last night….actually the rough night everyone had with the track conditions at Pevely, we just wanted to keep our car the best we could last night because we only had the one car and it had to be ready for the mile. Today we just kept working on it every chance we could and got it a little better each time. Then we developed that oil leak. That happened at the end of the heat race and we worked on it for the dash. That only lasted for about three laps. We worked on it again after that and it lasted for maybe six to eight laps in the feature then it progressively got worse. I ran out of tear-offs pretty quick and it was a good thing I had gloves. I used those to wipe the oil off my shield and then it started to get on the right rear tire. I mean, I knew there wasn’t going to be a lot of passing out there today so we just made all the right moves today and it worked out.”

Several times during the event Eckert was able to close on Bloomquist and pulled alongside of him a few times but just couldn’t get his Raye Vest Excavating/J&J Steel No. 24 Raye Vest owned Rocket Chassis/Cornett Racing Engines Ford Taurus past Bloomquist. Eckert described his race saying, “Yeah, we were able to get on him and alongside of him a few times. I actually feel I had a better car than what Scott did the whole race. But he was smart enough to know his car wasn’t very good and he stayed down around the bottom. I got alongside of him going down the back straightaway a couple of times but really you can’t go blasting into the corner alongside someone at this place.”

Eckert was asked about the incredible speed that the dirt Late Model cars turned on the mile speedway and if it caused any problems. “Not for me it didn’t but it sure did for that No. 5 car. Man, did you see that thing?”, said Eckert in reference to a lap 14 one car crash in turn three that virtually destroyed the car of Steve Sheppard Jr. Eckert continued, “These cars aren’t really built for the mile. When you crash at these speeds it’s not good. As long as you don’t crash everything is hunky-dory.”

Moyer was happy with his third place run aboard the J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Cooling/Petroff Towing No. 21 Billy Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo. “We were able to put the car back in the box all in one piece and didn’t hurt nothing”, said the current Championship point leader. “You come here to the mile knowing your going to be running some incredible speed but you also know it’s gonna’ be hard to pass. The big plus is that the motor stayed together. We had fun. We started fifth and ran third so we’ll take that.”

When told he had increased his point lead over Steve Francis to 16 points with only five events remaining Moyer stated with a chuckle, “That’s good for me I guess. You know that’s what it’s all about. We just want to run consistent. The rest of these tracks we’re gonna’ run Steve has run good at before. These tracks Steve has run at a little bit more than some of the other guys. So, we’ll just see what happens and try and finish them is the main thing.”

Bloomquist and Eckert brought the 25 car starting field to the green flag with Bloomquist winning the drag race to turn one. Eckert, Richards, Moyer and Darren Miller trailed Bloomquist at the end of the first lap. The caution waved on lap 2 when Joe Ross Jr. slowed on the backchute and despite trying to limp his car around to the pit entrance on the frontchute his car didn’t quite make it. Bloomquist powered away from Eckert on the restart with another lap completed before the caution waved again when John Blankenship rolled to a stop in turn one. Miller headed pitside during the caution and fell from the race with mechanical problems.

Bloomquist continued to lead the event through lap 10 with Eckert dogging the leader followed by Richards, Moyer and McCreadie with Birkhofer sixth trailed by McDowell, Chub Frank, Clanton and Francis. Bloomquist entered lapped traffic at lap 13 allowing Eckert to close. However the yellow waved again at lap 14 when Sheppard Jr. lost the handle in turn three backing very hard into the outside retaining wall. Though shaken Sheppard Jr. eventually climbed from his destroyed race car. During the caution period Frank fell from the action with an overheated engine.

The restart order had Bloomquist out in front with Eckert, Richards, Moyer and McCreadie trailing then Birkhofer, McDowell, Clanton, Francis and Voigt. Eckert made a couple of bids at Bloomquist but the leader slammed the door each time thwarting Eckert’s advances. The top ten running order remained unchanged at lap 20 as Bloomquist’s car started to show some oil smoke from the leak. Bloomquist again entered lapped traffic on lap 26 nearly losing his lead in turn two while trying to negotiate through the slower cars but was able to keep his car in front. Lapped traffic allowed Moyer to snare the third spot from Richards with three laps to go. Eckert made one last stab at Bloomquist as they raced off of turn four for the checkered flag but Bloomquist was up to the challenge holding off Eckert by a car length.

The $47,000 purse event attracted 33 cars to the one mile speedplant with Darrell Lanigan earning quick time honors with a fast lap of 27.932 seconds. Heat race wins fell to Miller, Richards, Bloomquist and Eckert while Voigt and Clint Smith took the “B” Mains and Bloomquist copped the dash.

NOTES:

Time Trials: The 33 car field took to the mile speedway with “Kid Rocket” Richards busting into the 27 second bracket with a pass of 27.968 seconds bringing a huge ovation from the very large crowd on hand. Lanigan was the only other driver to officially break into the 27 second bracket with his fast lap of 27.932 seconds which turned out to be the fastest time. “T-Mac” McCreadie brought the house down with his fast lap of 27.665 seconds just missing the track standard of Darren Miller by .017 seconds. However, McCreadie’s time was disallowed as he missed making the minimum weight by 10 pounds relegating him to the rear of the time trial list. Radar on the backchute by the Illinois State Police clocked McCreadie at over 154 mph during his disallowed fast lap.

Heat # 1: Miller got the break on the start with Moyer falling into second trailed by Lanigan and Frank. Miller ran away from the field taking the win by nearly half of a straightaway. Heading into turn one on the final lap Lanigan exploded the starter off of his car but was able to keep his car under control finishing in the eighth spot.

Heat # 2: Birkhofer got the jump on the start with Richards falling into second followed by Swartz and Erb Jr. Richards pulled alongside of Birkhofer entering turn three while working lap 2 but could not make the pass. Richards pulled right up on Birkhofer just past the halfway point and then shot to the inside of Birkhofer exiting turn four to snare the lead at lap 5 and ran away from Birkhofer. Erb Jr. pressured Swartz in the final laps but couldn’t find the room to move up a spot.

Heat # 3: Bloomquist powered off from his pole starting spot with McDowell, Clanton and Jacobsen falling into line. Bloomquist opened up a six car advantage by the end of lap 2 but McDowell caught back up with the leader just past the halfway point. Clanton then pulled in on McDowell but Bloomquist was up to the challenge taking the win over McDowell and Clanton. Jacobsen finished fourth several car lengths behind the top three finishers.

Heat # 4: Eckert got the break on the start trailed by Francis, Blankenship and Cl. Smith. All eyes were on McCreadie as he started to work his way to the front. McCreadie grabbed seventh by the time the field hit the backchute on the opening lap and moved into sixth at the end of the first lap. McCreadie continued his assault taking fifth from Webb on lap two. McCreadie then shot by Cl. Smith on lap 3 for fourth, notched Blankenship for third at the halfway point and then set sail for second running Francis. McCreadie ran down Francis catching the “Kentucky Colonel” on the backchute while working lap five making the pass entering turn three. With two laps to go McCreadie pulled to within 10 car lengths of Eckert and then on the final lap whittled Eckert’s lead down to five car lengths at the finish.

“B” Main # 1: Four cars (Lanigan, Cleaver, Cardine and Kruckenberg) failed to make the call for the first of two final chance races. Voigt got the jump at the start pulling into the lead with Allgaier, Brickler and Fannin falling in behind the leader. Lance would run three laps before pulling his car into the pit area. Voigt would lead the entire distance with Allgaier pulling to within two car lengths of the leader at the checkered flag with Brickler taking the final transfer spot.

“B” Main # 2: Cl. Smith jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and never looked back. “Cat Daddy” rolled to a convincing win trailed by Steffens and Webb.

Dash: Bloomquist shot from his third starting spot into the lead as the four cars raced off of turn two. Eckert stayed within striking distance of Bloomquist but could not catch the high flying Bloomquist. Richards rode home third with Miller fourth.

Feature: Lanigan was awarded a WoO Stacker 2® Late Model Series point provisional starting spot and was to have started 23rd. Lanigan had rolled out his back-up car after exploding the starter on his primary car during his heat race. However, upon command to fire engines, Lanigan’s car would not fire and after assistance from a push vehicle the car still would not fire. Lanigan rolled his car into the pit area and did not take the green flag resulting in only 75 “show-up” points being awarded.
