HARTFORD, MI - Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN led all but one of 50 laps Saturday night to win the Xtreme DirtCar Series main event at Hartford Speedway Park. The victory was worth $10,800 for the four-time series champion driving the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom Taurus.

Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA led one lap and finished second in the Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Steve Francis of Ashland, KY took the third spot in the Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid. Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV was fourth in the Bill Bland Towing/The Farm Used Auto Parts Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo.

Xtreme DirtCar Series point leader Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI drove his Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo to the fifth spot, but Birkhofer was able to close in on Mars in the championship battle. Mars leads Birkhofer by 16 points, while Bloomquist moved up to the third spot, 24 points behind Birkhofer, and 40 points behind Mars.

Defending and two-time series champion Rick Eckert of York, PA finished sixth to remain in the championship hunt. Eckert is 42 points behind fourth-place Francis, and 93 points behind Mars.

Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH was seventh and moved up to the seventh in points driving the QPI Tools Dirt Ripper Mastersbilt/Malcuit Monte Carlo. Matt Miller of Waterville, OH was the Lucas Oil Rookie of the Race with an eighth-place finish in the McCullough Motorsports Rocket/Russell Baker Grand Prix, and moved up to ninth spot in series points.

Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL took the ninth spot in the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus. Pearson remains sixth in the XDCS points chase, 53 points behind Eckert. Jeep Van Wormer of Picconning, MI rounded out the top ten in the Bayline Fire Protection Warrior/Cornett Taurus.

Bloomquist used his outside front row starting spot to pass pole sitter Birkhofer for the lead coming off the second turn on the first lap. Shaver held the third spot followed by Francis, Moran, Mars, Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA, Eckert, Miller, and Van Wormer. McDowell passed Mars for the fifth spot on lap two, and Francis got by Shaver for the third spot on lap four.

During the first 10 laps of the race, Bloomquist began to pull away from Birkhofer, but the leader was approaching the last cars on the lead lap by the 12th tour. When Bloomquist had to move from the cushion on the high side of the track to the bottom, his car lost speed, and Birkhofer began to close in.

Birkhofer caught Bloomquist trapped behind lapped traffic coming off the second turn on lap 17, and moved around the outside to take the lead. On the next lap, the roles were reversed, and Bloomquist went to the outside to retake the lead on lap 18 while Birkhofer was stuck behind lapped cars.

By lap 20, the outside groove was slowing down and the cushion was disappearing. Many drivers began to drop to the inside groove, as it was taking rubber and therefore faster.

Just when the track locked down, the only caution flag of the race came out when the 1999 series champion McDowell stopped his Larry Shaw Race Cars/J&J Steel Rocket By Shaw/Kuntz Taurus in turn four on lap 24. McDowell was running sixth when he dropped out of the race.

With the track locked down, XDCS officials elected to go with a single file restart, with Bloomquist leading, Birkhofer, Francis, Shaver, Mars, Eckert, Moran, Miller, Pearson and Van Wormer. With no passing lane left on the race track, that's the way they ran for the remaining 27 laps of the race.

Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC started 23rd and finished 14th to earn the $100 Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race Award in the Die Cast Digest/Starrette Trucking GRT/Gaerte Monte Carlo. McDowell was the Ringers Gloves Fast Qualifier among the 38 entrants with a lap around the 1/2-mile dirt oval in 20.134 seconds for an average speed of 89.401 miles per hour.

Bloomquist also picked up the $100 JE Pistons Bonus Award with a win in the first eight-lap heat race. Moran won the second heat, with Birkhofer taking the third heat, and Shaver posting the fourth heat race win. Birkhofer won the 4-lap Action Performance Dash to earn the pole position for the main event, and was followed by Bloomquist, Moran, and Shaver.

Rick Aukland of Zanesville, OH drove the Ostrom Painting and Sandblasting Rocket/Malcuit Grand Prix to victory in the first ten-lap consolation race. Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI dropped out of the third heat with running in a transfer spot.

Schlieper had to start last in the second ten-lap consolation race, and came through the field to win it driving the Miller Brothers Coal/Hawkeye Trucking Warrior/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Schlieper finished 11th in the main event and was battling Van Wormer for the tenth spot in the closing laps of the race.

The next event for the Xtreme DirtCar Series will be on June 17 with a 50-lap $10,000-to-win event at Davenport Speedway in Davenport, IA.
