Local racing legend Bobby Layne powered his way to his second modified feature victory of the year at Warrensburg, Missouri’s Central Missouri Speedway Saturday night. Layne fended off challenges from multiple competitors to take the checkered flag. Bobby has stated many times that the competition level at CMS in the modified division is like no other track in the area and the 43 modifieds on hand certainly lived up to that statement.

The night got off to a wild start with no less than six heat races for the modifieds to sort out the starting line-up for the main event. With only the top three in each of the six heats transferring to the main event the drivers were gunning for every opening possible and slicing and dicing all over the track in hopes of achieving a top-three finish. Several CMS hard chargers had a difficult night in the heat races and had to settle for transfer spots via one of the two b-main events. Heat race winners were Bobby Layne; Gary Blackburn, Jr.; Steve Potter; James McMillin; Lonnie Hibner and Dennis Walrath. The B-main event winners were Joe Walker and Lee Hibner.

At the drop of the green flag it was Layne and Fulton, Missouri’s, Gary Blackburn, Jr., leading the field to the green flag. From the get go Layne found the fast line around the track and had the 01 ride hooked up in the middle lane. Layne, a master at finding a fast line around any type of racing surface set back the challenges of Blackburn and Warrensburg’s James McMillin early on in the event. Both Blackburn and McMillin suffered mechanical woes and were out of the event before lap ten. After a couple of rough restarts that saw Birthday Boy Kyle Westerhold involved in yellow flag incidents with Fast Richard Layne’s 03 machine and the 8up car of David Farrow, B. Layne once again set sail under Hershel Thompson’s green-flag. By lap 10 Dennis Walrath in the 99w had moved into the second position from his sixth starting spot and stayed there until lap 18 when he also suffered mechanical problems, which relegated him back to a 17th place finish. Eventually, mechanical troubles also took out Richard Layne, Joe Walker, Westerhold, Lee Hibner and Jefferson City’s Bob Test. After the mid-race caution flags Bobby Layne never looked back and scored a convincing second modified main victory on the year. Terry “the Terminator” Schultz of Sedalia, a master of the high side lane at CMS found himself in second position when the race ended and Concordia’s “Movin” Dave Meyer, after having to transfer to the main event through one of the two b-mains, raced all the way up to third. Meyer amazingly gained 21 positions in his quest to take the main event victory. Jesse “the Wheeler Dealer” ran a smooth race to cross the line in fourth. Booneville’s Steve Potter crossed the line with a strong run to the 5th position and Chad “the Gator” Lyle, also a transfer car from one of the two b-main events rounded out the top six.

There were 21 limited late models on hand in what surely will be a preview of Sunday night’s special show, which will include the limiteds along with the mighty modifieds. It took three impressive heat races to sort out the main event lineup. Heat race winners were David Gemes of Warsaw, Jimmy Morris of Blue Springs and Ashland native Virgil Jeffery. California, Missouri’s Jeff Schlup in the 21s proved once again why he is one of the hottest drivers around right now by coming from tenth starting spot in the main event to take his third win in a row. At the drop of the green flag it was point leader David Gemes and Jimmy Morris leading the 19-car field into turns one and two. From the get go Morris had the left front of his late model lifting off the ground in the turns and down the straight-aways as he put distance between himself and the rest of the field. Brett Rollert and Virgil Jeffery were never too far behind and had “Mountain Man” Mark Evinger in tow early on in the event with them. After a couple caution flags for some minor spins, Morris was again able to distance himself from the rest of the field. By lap seven Schlup found the high side to be the preferred line and began clicking off some impressive laps having passed six cars to get to fourth. On lap ten Schlup caught and passed Morris for the lead and never looked back. Morris was able to challenge on one final restart but in the end Schlup was too tough and took his third feature when in a row. Morris held on to second and was followed by Gemes, Rollert, Evinger and Jeffery at the line.

In the 305 sprint division there were two heat races to set the field for the feature event. Harrisonville’s Kenny Potter took heat one and Mora’s Randy Roberts, another driver on a hot streak took the checkered flag for heat two. When the green flew for the main event it was Potter and Roberts leading the field into turn one. Roberts quickly found himself in familiar territory as his red, white and blue machine raced to the front. Gabe Maycock, normally in the black #98 machine was in the #99 machine this week and quickly made up ground from this ninth starting spot, moving all the way up to third by lap seven. At the mid point of the race Potter shot up to the high side and took the lead away from Roberts who was trying the low side. Potter’s lead lasted for four short laps before Roberts once again put a power move on his competitors and flew back into the lead, never to be challenged again. Behind Roberts was a classic battle between Austin Alumbaugh, Potter and Maycock right to the finish. At the cross-checkered flag finish it was Roberts winning over Middletown’s Gabe Maycock, Higginsville’s Alumbaugh, Potter, Grain Valley’s Terry Moore and Lee’s Summit native Will Pierce.

Thirty big street stocks were on hand on this night, which meant it took four heats and one B-main to sort out the 20-car starting field for the main event. Heat race winners included Warrensburg natives Wayne Harper, Chad Eickleberry and Jay Lyle along with Clinton native Nathan Himes. Bronson Combs of Shawnee, Kansas, was victorious in the B-main event. With Harper and Himes leading the field to green it was Himes who got out to an early lead on the rest of the field. It was a classic 4-car battle for the lead early on between Himes, Harper, Lyle and Chad Eickleberry until a caution flag flew midway through the race and bunched the field back up. By lap eight, Harper had garnered the lead with Himes, Eickleberry and Lyle not too far behind the leader. Marc Carter began charging to the front with 5 laps remaining from his twelfth-place starting spot and found himself in fourth late in the running having moved around the Eickleberry machine. In the end it was Wayne Harper taking his third main event win over Lyle, Carter, Independence’s Jimmy Ngo, Oak Grove’s Cole Wimmer and Fulton’s Josh Helm. Both Nathan Himes and Chad Eickleberry, despite originally finishing in the top six were disqualified from the event.
