(Warrensburg, MO) 360 sprint car drivers from the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS), Midwest Region and the Winged Outlaw Warriors (WoW) invaded Warrensburg’s own, Central Missouri Speedway on Friday night with an open wheel special event for their first visit to the high-banked clay oval this year. This special event weekend also started off the final weekend of racing for the 2010 season honoring Jesse Hockett who started his race career in a 4 cylinder sprint car at CMS at the age fourteen. The Hockett family and friends were at CMS on Friday evening to honor him after his untimely passing earlier this year. The race program on Friday night also included the 600cc Micro Midgets and B-Modified drivers for a non-points race to entertain the open wheel race fans from all over the Midwest.

After some light mid-week rains the high-banked track was prepped to take on the powerful sprint cars for a rare CMS appearance with 26 drivers from Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, California and Kansas checked into the pits for 4 heat races and a b-main final qualifying race to sort out the 20 starting spots for the Hockett Memorial feature event. Brian Brown, Jon Corbin, Jay Kinder and Josh Fisher claimed the four heat race wins and Taylor Walton grabbed the b-main final qualifying race. The feature event thrilled the local fans when ASCS/WoW driver Brian Brown from Grain Valley drives his FVP Maxim into Waterloo Storage Products Victory Lane for his sixth ASCS Midwest victory this season. Jack Dover made a late race pass into second place, Kyle Hirst finished third, Cody Baker and Austin Alumbaugh completed the top-five. Check the ASCS website at www.ascs360racing.com and at www. wowsprints.homestead.com for complete results.

The 600cc Micro Midgets made their first appearance at CMS in many years and made a great impression with the fans when 13 drivers made the trek to Warrensburg. The heat race winners were Cole Melby and Nathan Benson. Early in the race Benson led the field of first-time visiting drivers to the high-banked clay oval. Melby and Matt Brosch battled for the second and third spots. Melby was in second place working his machine into turn two late in the race when he slid up and over the bank in turn two bringing out the only caution of the feature. Finally, as the checkers flew for the finish, Nathan Benson from Concordia takes home the victory with Dwayne Benson out of Sweet Springs second, Brosch from Sedalia third, 12 year old driver, Cole Campbell fourth, Tyler Thomas from Collinsville, Oklahoma and Brett Sheppard from Gilliam rounding out the top six.

B-Modified drivers had another bonus night of racing at CMS when 10 drivers registered in the pits for racing. This race was the second Friday night event in a row after last weekend’s $1,500-to-win feature with another dominate performance from Brad Smith. This Friday night the B-Modified drivers brought their machines to compete during the final weekend of racing for the extra payout. The heat race triumphs went to Smith and Dean Wille setting up another battle between the two veteran drivers. The feature started with Smith taking the early race lead. Wille and Billy Bentley were close behind in the top three. Wille was strong but did have some smoke appearing out of the right side of his modified. Smith was in control the entire race even after the only caution when Chris Brockway spun in turn two after some contact with Bentley. In the end, Brad Smith from Belton takes home the victory for his twelfth feature win of the year at CMS. Wille, Bentley, John Brooks, Brockway and Mark Evinger completed the top six.

The excitement continues at CMS on Saturday night with the season-ending championship features which takes place September 11th with a special “Homes for Our Troops” fundraiser and the Waterloo Storage Products night at the races.
