The Farmer City Raceway had nearly 130 cars in the pits to open up the season on Friday. A grandstand full of anxious race fans braved the chilly temperatures to see the cars heat up the fast ¼ mile raceway. The raceway had a full show for the opener with UMP Late Models, UMP Modified, Sportsman and Street Stock divisions racing.

Brian Shirley of Springfield battled it out with Shannon Babb of Moweaqua for top honors in the Late Model division along with Eric Smith of Bloomington, Jason Feger of Bloomington and Kyle Logue of Decatur rounding out the top five. Returning track champion, Jeff Leka took the checkered flag for the Modified cars, with Gary Cook, Jr. of Deer Creek, Dave Porth of Gardner, Matt Goulden of Springfield and Travis Kohler rounding out the top five. Jay Smithson of Ellsworth took top place for the Sportsman drivers and behind him were Rod Sandage of Bloomington, Jim Felker Jr. of Bloomington, Gary Clark of Deer Creek and Scott Thrasher of Urbana. The Street Stock division was won by Chris Dick of Deland and following him to the checkered flag were Steve Ewing of Decatur, Ken Sublon of Fisher, Chris Tackett of Bloomington and Doug McKennick of Peoria.

The racing season continues next Friday with a full show including the UMP Late Models, UMP Modified, Sportsman and Street Stock divisions racing. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
