Vicksburg, MS (01/19/11) – Bub McCool opened his 2011 season over the course of the past two weeks in his #57J McCool Logging/Victory Circle M1 Chassis By Moyer/Jay Dickens Racing Engine Super Late Model in the 5th Annual Wild West Shootout at USA Raceway (Tucson, Arizona).

During the course of the six race series in his first ever appearance at the facility McCool amassed one win, five top ten finishes, and only one DNF. Below is a blog-style summary of his performance.

January 8th, 2011 - On Saturday afternoon, Bub opened his 2011 campaign at USA Raceway (Tucson, AZ). The $3,000 to win event drew a talent-laden field of 49 competitors, and in heat race action, Bub put on a driving display as he charged from the seventh starting spot to a second place finish. Via passing points he locked into the redraw for the feature, where he pulled the seventh pill to earn the seventh starting spot for the main event. McCool would earn a few spots early in the event as he flirted with the top five. As the race progressed, Bub mounted a charge through the pack and would find himself as high as the third spot by lap 21. Lap 22 would find McCool making a bid for the second spot, but contact between he and Jeremy Payne would cause Bub to lose ground as he slipped to fourth. Bub would go on to record a fourth place finish at the checkers behind winner, Billy Moyer Jr., Jeremy Payne, and Jimmy Mars.
January 9th, 2011 - McCool Motorsports entered the second leg of the 5th Annual Wild West Shootout on Sunday afternoon at USA Raceway as 52 cars entered the event. For the second straight day, Bub would start deep in his heat race grid after drawing a large number at the pill draw. Despite starting seventh in his heat, he would blast his way to a second place finish at the checkered flag. Via his performance he was the second highest point's earner and for the second straight day earned a spot in the redraw for the feature. However, for the second day in a row he would also draw a large number at the redraw, and as a result started 8th in the feature.
In the 30 lap, $5,000 to win feature, McCool worked around midpack early in the event before methodically beginning to work his way through the field. By lap 25 he was up to fifth on and on a restart on the same lap he rocketed up to fourth. Two laps later on another restart McCool would advance to third and that's where he would cross the finish line behind race winner, Pat Doar, and RC Whitwell.
January 12th, 2011 - After a two day hiatus, action resumed with the Wild West Shootout at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona with a $3,000 to win event. With 44 Super Late Models entered the night started turbulently as Bub jumped the cushion in turn three in hot laps resulting in hard contact with the wall. The team would thrash to replace the rearend and right side components of the car as they narrowly made the call for heat race action. In the heat race, on a hammer-down track, passing would be difficult, and McCool would only pass one car as he fell short of locking into the feature. As a result, he ran a b-main event, where he finished second to earn the 18th starting spot for the 30 lap feature. The first lap of the feature would see him narrowly avoid disaster as several cars tangled in front of him, causing him to come to a stop. He would survive the incident with no damage and rejoined the pack. As many drivers struggled to find the groove in the feature, McCool mounted a charge through the pack and would ultimately record a fourth place finish behind race winner, Billy Moyer, RC Whitwell, and Terry Phillips.
January 14th, 2011 - It was back to business for Bub McCool on Friday night in the $3,000 to win event at USA Raceway (Tucson, Arizona). Round #4 of the Wild West Shootout drew a field of 49 Super Late Models and once again Bub drew a large number at the pill draw causing him to start at the back of the heat. He would charge from ninth to fifth in the heat, but fell just short of locking into the top 12 cars, and as a result had to run a b-main, which he won. After winning the b-main, he started 14th in the 30 lap feature. He would maneuver his way to a 10th place finish at the checkered flag for his fourth straight top ten in the series.
January 15th, 2011 - Bub claimed his first win of 2011 on Saturday night at USA Raceway (Tucson, Arizona) as he topped the $3,000 to win, Wild West Shootout event. Forty-seven Super Late Models were on hand for the event, and in heat race action, Bub started seventh and advanced to a third place finish. With the strong heat race performance McCool once again locked into the redraw. In the draw he would receive the eighth starting position for the 30 lap feature. Early in the race, McCool began a march to the front and by lap eight he was already up to the third spot as he and Mike Johnson dueled for second. A lap 13 restart found McCool racing past Johnson to assume control of the second spot as he set his sights on leader, Ronny Lee Hollingsworth. McCool would slowly cut into Hollingsworth's lead over the next several laps, and on the white flag lap McCool would use the low line to catch the leader. The pair would battle side-by-side down the backstretch, and as they exited turn four McCool inched ahead on the low side with Hollingsworth on the outside. Exiting turn four McCool and Hollingsworth would make contact. Hollingsworth would make hard contact with the wall as McCool limped to the finish line as he claimed the win over Billy Moyer, Ray Moore, Jimmy Mars, and Brad Looney.
January 16th, 2011 - McCool Motorsports entered the Bill Cheesebourg Memorial on Sunday evening at USA Raceway (Tucson, Arizona). The $10,000 to win event saw Bub advance from his seventh starting spot to a third place finish, which once again locked him into the redraw. In the redraw he received the sixth starting spot for the 40 lap feature. Bub ran in the top ten for the first half of the event before retiring around the midway point as he lost fuel pressure.
The team will now have a three week break as they prepare for Florida Speedweeks, which will span February 7th-February 19th. The team plans to enter all of the East Bay Raceway events as well as the Ocala Speedway event and tentatively the Volusia Speedway Park events.
