Mark Burgtorf took his second Budweiser IMCA Late Model feature event win in a row Sunday night at Quincy Raceways. Clint Kirkham jumped into the lead a the drop of the green flag and led the first 3 circuits before giving the lead away to rookie Justin Reed. Reed led for 3 more laps before giving the top spot over to veteran Ron Elbe. Elbe set sail over the field until Brent Slocum and Mark Burgtorf caught up and began a three way battle for the top spot that raged from the tenth circuit until Burgtorf blew by to take the lead for good on the eighteenth lap of the 30 lap feature event. Slocum had to settle for second with Lonnie Bailey in third, Elbe in fourth and Jamie Wilson in fifth. Burgtorf and Jason Krigbaum were the heat race victors as Mike Karhoff grabbed the checkers in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.
Brandon Brown looked like he may have gotten rid of his bad luck in the Miller Lite A-Modified feature event but it just was not to be his night as he led the first 15 laps of the 20 lap event. Brown battle with fifth row starter, Vance Wilson from lap 10 through 15 when Wilson slipped by to take the checkered flag first. A war erupted behind Wilson for the last five laps for the rest of the top five with Brown holding on for second with Mark Burgtorf in third, Henry Delonjay in fourth and Brandon Lennox in fifth. Delonjay, Lennox and Michael Long took the heat race wins with Long also claiming the P&S Auto & Truck Collision Repair Trophy Dash.
The B-Modified were time limited to fourteen laps as the yellow flag flew numerous times during the main event. Wyatt Lance claimed the feature event win by leading all fourteen laps with the mayheim all behind him. Marty Hull came from the 8th starting spot to claim second with Joe Hooper in third, A.J. Tournear in fourth and Wes Mayfield in fifth. Lance, Jim Leffew and Tony Dunker grabbed the checkered flags in the heat races.
Steve Carlin took his first ever feature event win over the 33 car Bomber class. Carlin made his outside front row starting spot pay off as he led all 20 laps of the feature event. Billy Genenbacher challenged Carlin over the last ten circuits but could not get the pass completed and had to settle for second with Trevor Webster in third, Larry Powell in fourth and Bobby Uppinghouse Jr. in fifth. Carlin, Webster, Uppinghouse and Adam Birch were the heat race winners with Bobby Lewis claiming the win in the B-Main.
Racing action continues on Sunday, June 1 with Poage Auto Plaza Night at the Races featuring Spectator Drags. Gates open at 4:30 with Hot Laps at 5:45 and Racing starting at 6:30pm.
June is a big month of action at Quincy Raceways with the AMA Flat Track Motorcycles on June 6, Kenny Schrader/UMP Late Model Show on June 10, and the Pepsi Mid-Season Challenge on June 22nd as special events scheduled with the regular Sunday night racing action. The start of the 2003 Thirsty Thursdays on June 5 featuring 2 Man Cruisers, 4 Bangers, Truck Wars and Figure 8 racing.
