"Casebolt Jr. Captures 2nd Career NALMS Victory with win at Florence Speedway!!!"
By: Chris Tilley-NALMS Public Relations (Series Announcer)

Steve Casebolt Jr. of Richmond, Indiana took home the $5,000 payday and the Biggest win of his racing career Saturday Night April 19, 2003 at the Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky as Casebolt captured the Northern Allstars Late Model Series Sanctioned "Spring 50". This was Casebolt's second career NALMS Win in the # c9 Casebolt Racing, Rocket/Dargie Powered Ford Taurus. Casebolt's only other NALMS win came during the 1999 NALMS Race Season at the Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway.

During the Intermission, just before the Late Model feature race rolled out, track crews sprayed water on the racing surface on the high side to prevent dust from entering the stands during the racing. When the starting field was lined up on the track, they were given a few warm-up laps for their race cars. Michael Chilton, who had made the feature through his heat race, took to the high side, and during one of his hot laps, he slammed the outside wall, damaging his # 97 Rayburn Chassis. He entered the pit area, and then crew members began working on the race car, but Chilton was unable to get his machine repaired to start the feature race.

Polesitter Darrell Lanigan and Outside starter Ted Nobbe were then given the one-to-go signal by the Flagman. Lanigan led the 23-Car Field out of turn three into turn four to the cone. Lanigan then jumped the start ahead of Nobbe at the cone. The Caution Flag was immediately thrown for Lanigan's start. According to the NALMS Rule Book, if you jump the start, you will move back one spot. NALMS Officials then put 3rd Place Starter Casebolt on the pole and moved Lanigan to the 3rd spot.

After the field was re-aligned, the pack was then given the one-to-go signal, and sent to the green. New polesitter Casebolt took to the lead of the start of the race with Lanigan, Nobbe, and Tony Traficant in tow on the first of the 50 Lap Feature. By the time the field had came down to the second lap, Lanigan was closing in on Casebolt with just a car length between the pair of Rocket race cars.

The race was still led by Casebolt by the time that the cars came down for the 7th lap. On lap eight, Casebolt had a 10 car length advantage over Lanigan, who was starting to slip back from the leader and getting some pressure from third place driver, Ted Nobbe. Off of turn two going down the backstraight, Nobbe Slipped to the inside of Lanigan taking the second spot and now having sights set for Casebolt. By the time lap 12 came around, Casebolt had worked his way around the 1/2 mile racetrack with a 10 car length advantage over the second place car of Nobbe, and Casebolt was starting to see lapped traffic ahead of him by lap 13. The first lapped car Casebolt had to get around was Mike Hawley, by which he did going under the stripe for the 13th circuit.

Casebolt held the point still on lap 14, and the second place driver of Ted Nobbe, coming out of the corners was starting to push just a little , as he rode the outside.

The second lapped car Casebolt was about to go around was the # 7 machine of Jim Curry. Casebolt went around Curry to put him one lap down on lap 17. Casebolt had stretched out a healthy lead over Nobbe who was trailing trying to get around lapped traffic himself.

Casebolt then went around John Holt on lap 21 to put him a lap down, as well as Terry Eaglin on Lap 24.

Fourth place driver Steve Francis, who started fourth, made his way around Traficant on lap 21 to move up into the third position. On lap 25, with the halfway markers being given, the field came down under the stripe with Casebolt running first, Nobbe second, Francis third, Traficant fourth, and Steve Hillard fifth. Francis who now was in the third place slot, pulled away from Traficant by about four car length's looking to take second from Nobbe.

The field was then slowed as the yellow came out on lap 28, the first caution of the race, bringing the field back close together. When the restart came, Casebolt had jumped back out to a good lead over Francis, Nobbe, Traficant, and Hillard in tow.

On lap 34 it was Casebolt the leader who came off of turn four boggling, Francis then getting a little bit of an advantage holding second, and Nobbe third.

On lap 37, Matt Miller passed Bob Pierce for the seventh spot, and had his sights set for Jerry Rice, who had just moved into the sixth spot, a few laps earlier. The caution would then fly for the last time on lap 41 slowing the field with just a 9 lap dash to the finish.

On Lap 45, the field came down for the 5 Laps to go signal and it was Casebolt who had stretched out another good lead from second place driver Steve Francis, third was Nobbe, Miller was fourth, and fifth was Steve Hillard. Rice had moved around Hillard for the fifth spot on lap 46 with just 4 laps to go.

Casebolt then went on and held off a hard charging Steve Francis for the biggest win of his racing career, winning the 2003 "Spring 50" at the Florence Speedway sanctioned by the Northern Allstars Late Model Series.

The next two races for the Northern Allstars Late Model Series will come up on Friday and Saturday May 2-3 as the NALMS will head down into the Tennessee area for the "2003 NALMS Tennessee Swing".
